  1. And a lovely show it is, too. Beautifully paced. Makes me wish HIGH FREQUENCY was in print for "Moonscape." That high-pitched cry in "I'll Keep Loving You" is the sound of my jazz soul mourning the loss of a legend.
  2. God help me if I'm even in England listening to GIVE 'EM ENOUGH ROPE! I thought I was living on the edge listening to it here in Texas. Who knew?
  3. Without question, track 1 of the BFT is track 1 from this appropriately named album!!! And the groovy thing is, when you click this link, this song will start playing, so you know I'm right! Haven't listened any further yet, but wanted to get this one in there. Funny thing is, I bought this cuz Ben Webster was on it, and it was SO much better than I was even hoping for! Don't miss this one!
  4. Give him time: Wilburn's lawyers are still negotiating with Bertrand for producer's credits on all of Bertand's posts, past and present.
  5. Yeah! I mean, it's not like you're a Styx fan or anything.....
  6. And I apologize for not making myself very clear early on: I am absolutely thrilled that such a tribute to McLean was going on. And as much of a gripe I have about Schapp (and it has as much to do with the way he's botched a lot of my favorite reissues as well as his incessant rambling), at least he's playing the music. And if people dig him and get a lot out of him, all the better. It's just my own personal hang-up. Okay, I'll shut up now (should've thought of that a few posts ago).
  7. Probably my favorite of all the NIGHT LIGHTS broadcasts, one I listen to often.
  8. Nah, just frustrated that I gotta listen to this guy blather on and on and on and ON about Ray Draper during a friggin' tribute to Jackie McLean!!! You're not actually SIDING with the guy, are ya? Hell, I put in a lot of hours at my job, big freakin' deal! That's my job! His job is to spin the damn records, not go on and on and ON (and on andonandonandonandon ad nauseaum ad infinitum). And so what if he's got access to all these obscure records? PLAY 'EM fercryinoutloud, don't spend a half hour putting the anal in analyzing by telling us over and over and over and OVER about Bird's (notice how Schapp rarely, if ever, refers to Parker as "Parker," guess he figures the hip quotient is still at play, oh well, his choice I guess) influence on McLean, and while I agree that there's a lot to be said about that influence, Schapp goes over and above and beyond the call of restraint by speaking in MINUTEST detail about one freakin' SONG!!! And it takes him a half-hour to do this! Not to mention the fact that his voice has all the excitement of a tenth-grade economics teacher. Criminy, Schapp: if you're that excited about the record, how about conveying some o' that excitement, eh? I shoulda sent the above to WKCR instead. Ah well, hindsight is always 20/20, and mine is astigmatic. So, as long as yer passing the hat, better put in some good glasses. And some obscure McLean records I can listen to. Love always, BA
  9. You got THAT right.
  10. Gotta disagree with you there; his incessant and self-congratulatory rambling has made listening to this broadcast a freakin' chore! Schapp's voice is the sound of a man who thinks he knows everything there is to know about jazz, and he'll be the first one to tell you. Hell, I got so frustrated today I fired off an e-mail to WKCR to ask them to PLEASE make Schapp shut up and play some music! It's like we get a half-hour of music, and then a half-hour of talkin' a lot and sayin' nothing (as JB once said).
  11. Don't know about the 90's issue, but this one sounds FANTASTIC. This was my first exposure to this music, and for my money, it's every bit as revelatory as Monk's GENIUS OF MODERN MUSIC.
  12. Jackie's performance on the "One Night with Blue Note" DVD.
  13. I'm with Ghost here: this one hurts too much. When I saw the thread title, I gasped. Man, this hurts. Even more than when the great JOS passed. This one was so unexpected. And his music was just so full of LIFE! What a body of work! Not a bad record in the bunch! Jackie, Lee, and Billy are together once again. God bless you, Jackie Mac. And thank you.
  14. Not sure I ever said anything about this being an off-the-cuff blowing session; I'm really looking forward to hearing this! My bad, however, as I thought there were only four other tracks, instead of five, with the "3 Coins!" If it fits, I'm gonna put both of these sessions onto one CDR for car-driving! The sound quality was what I was referring to. I remember it sounding like it had been mastered through an aqualung!
  15. Donald Byrd – Royal Flush - from the Mosaic. Probably my favorite Byrd session! Lee Morgan – The Cooker (bonus track) - nice to see some 50's Mogie getting the RVG treatment. Hell, for that matter it's nice to see ANY 50's material getting the RVG upgrade. Hank Mobley – Another Workout - does anyone have the track listing for this? Wasn't it just four songs, plus "Three Coins in the Fountain?" I mean, I'm still gonna get it eventually, but it seems like it would've been nicer just to put these songs on "Workout!" Donald Byrd – Off To The Races - another from the Mosaic, another great one! Jackie Mac KILLS on this one! Freddie Hubbard – Here To Stay - this oughta be worth hearing! Bobby Hutcherson – Happenings - another one I'm looking forward to hearing, especially since Oblique came out! Jackie McLean – Demon’s Dance - in COMPLETE agreement with Kevin on this one! Lee Morgan – City Lights - see above comments on The Cooker Horace Silver – Doin’ The Thing At The Village Gate (includes bonus tracks) - another one I was hoping would be released! This is my favorite Silver group! Wow, SEVEN from these batches. This'll break me AGAIN! (Not gonna buy the Byrd titles, but just wanted to encourage those who missed the Mosaic to pick these up!)
  16. BWAAAAA HAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!
  17. PM sent, with no guarantee that I'll have time to post or anything. But I figure if the last BFT was any indication, this one oughta be just as fun!
  18. Happy Birthday, BERIGAN!!!! Here's hoping this year is much better than last year!
  19. Aren't there a lot of Scientologists on that show to begin with?
  20. Wasps don't inhabit old nests. They always build new. I know; but I figure if they see an old nest, and the smell of the hornet killer is still there, maybe they'll figure they oughta build elsewhere. Hardly scientific, I know; but it does the trick! What we (me & Al, at least) really need is some anti-bird spray for the garage! Oh man, you know it!!! Had another one in the garage this weekend; my heart has FINALLY stopped hyperventilating!

    Neil Young

Had a chance to listen to Greendale the other week. It was okay. It kinda reminded me of an album-length variation of “Powderfinger.” Plus, NOT having Pancho on rhythm guitar left a HUGE void.
