  1. I tried seraching for a Tom Waits corner, and unless I am blind or stupid or both, I could not find one. No doubt there are many rabid Waits fans on this site, and I certainly consider myself part of that group. I could go on for hours on what I love about Tom Waits, so I will just start with a nifty quote I just came across. "Here's something i stumbled upon at my daughter's birthday party: I rubbed the outside of a large tight balloon and obtained the familiar screaming warble you hear when clowns are making balloon animals. I found that if you put cornstarch on your hands and "play" it, it sounds very much like an Eric Dolphy solo, or a monkey with its hair on fire." - Tom Waits I would say the pretty well encapsulates many of the aspects that makes me love the man and his music. Additionally I will be playing in a jazz duo (2 guitars) on friday where we will be covering an instrumental version of the classic 'In the Neighborhood." Should be fun.

  3. I was mainly just joking around. As I've said, I've been to every Bonnaroo and I'm heavy into both the jam and jazz scene. I think there is SOME aspects of lazy musicianship in the jazz scene (as in a few cats learn mixolydian and just stop there and think they are advanced cats) but for the most part the musicianship is at quite a high level, and really brings rock up to a level that makes an easy handoff to jazz fandom.
  4. If Bonnaroo signals the end of Jam Bands, did it also signal the beginning? Bonnaroo is just once small aspect of the jam community, and while they abandoned the all jam thing, they were always pretty diverse. The Roots, Jurassic 5, Bob Dylan, New Pornographers, The Frames, Modest Mouse etc.. have played the shows in the past. Really the only difference this year is less jammy headliners, and a few BIG indie acts. There are still many places to get your jam on though: http://wakarusa.com/2006/lineup.asp http://langerado.com/ Obviously with Phish ending and the Dead likely calling it quites, the scene is different, but as long as musicians and fans are into improvised music, but too lazy to learn jazz, jam bands will exist. I'll be at Bonnaroo for the 5th year in a row now. I bought my tix without hesitation. p.s. I think Devandra already has broken out.
  5. not sure if this as been shared yet... Q: how do you know when donna jean is knocking at your door? A: She never knows when to come in and doesn't have the right key

    Neil Young

Ive seen Neil live twice. Once solo acoustic, once with Crazy Horse in full out jam mode, will most songs cracking the 10 minutes barrier. Both were utterly fantastic, even transcendent. Are You Passionate is definitely a weird start. Kinda like starting your Miles collection with Star People.
  8. Darko scores 8 on 3-4 shooting with 5 boards and a couple blocks in 22 min. Pretty nice game, the boy can play. Just you wait.
  9. 1. No way anyone tops 'Shemp' Shostokovich 2. As they say, 'the bottle was dusty but the liqour was clean'
  10. With all due respect, there was still complete clarity in his post. Judge less severely and attempt to understand things before going off on others and there wont be any problems. To still try to pain this as an issue where a poster wasnt been clear is disingenous, imo. But anyways, welcome to the board! We love Eric Kloss here!
  11. By this thread I mean the original post of yours. As Jim pointed out, to even imply that in any way the success of the Headhunters would any effect on Miles' decision to retire is flat our ridiculous. But even moreso, the original review disregarded Herbie's contributions as well. The funk of On The Corner was hardly a one time deal, and it was something that Miles pursued quite in-depth. Herbie was aiming for something that was very different, and he achieved it. Its wasnt ripping off Miles, it was exploring the funk that many were doing at the time. Guy was right bringing up Mwandishi, an electric band of Herbie's that I suppose you dont know about or havent heard. They were doing electric jazz funk in 1969, WELL before On the Corner. I think the completely dismissive responses to this thread tell us a great deal about validity of the amazon review.
  12. Um. What exactly was the 'rude' coment anyways? I dont know howyou cold possibly read his post as insulting to Eric Kloss.
  13. Darko with NO minutes tonight. I would pull a Sprewell on his coach if i were him. This is outrageous. I want to see this kid play so bad, I will boycott the NBA if he doesnt get 15 mpg for orlando. There is no WAY he isnt better than Pat Garrity.
  14. "When Herbie Hancock put out his Headhunters album and it sold like hotcakes...everybody at Columbia said, 'oh, so thats what Miles was talking about!' But this was too late for On the Corner, and watching the way Headhunters sold just pissed me off even more." - Miles Davis, pg 328-9 in his autiobiography. Still, this thread is quite humorous and fundamentally misunderstands Miles' approach to music.
  15. Im still a relative newbie but I dig 74 alot. That jazzy shit is just fantastic. But I have a feeling Europe 72 will always be my true master. On a semi-side note, are there any guitar players around that know some good online resources for coppin jerry's lick or jerry's style? Ive been doin quite a bit of that recently.
  16. pistons should have played one half with bosh, and one half with wade. just to show the world what could have been if it werent for super tall serbian dudes.
  17. I haven't, but his legendary status as a jazz educator is practically unparalleled. In the book 'Thinking About Jazz' both Barry and many of his students talk about his methods as an instructor. I have to say, any chance to learn from him sounds tantalizing to say the least. 100 bucks is only a couple lessons from good players, let alone greats. I can't imagine you regretting your purchase.
  18. A grasshopper walks into a bar and takes a seat. Bartender say 'hey we have a drink named after you!." The grasshopper says "Really? You have a drink named Steve?!?" Q: Whats the best way to catch a fish? A: Have someone throw it to you. Pirate walks into a bar and has a steering wheel in his pants. The bartender says, "Hey guy, you know you have a steering wheel in your pants?" The pirate replies, "Aaaaarrrrgh, its driving me nuts!"
  19. can you tell us which ones are on the way out?
  20. I havent heard them on their own, but I think their EP with Iron and Wine is absolutely fabulous.
  21. Tennessee has a 9.25% sales tax????? Wow, does any other city have a higher sales tax? Tennessee is a city!?!
  22. Anyone make it out to this? Money was just too tight for me, unfortunately. Hopefully I will get another chance at a later date.
  23. At the risk of getting this thread ghettoized, isn't the answer obvious.
  24. The 'final' four episodes were last night. Mostly brilliant stuff, with Jason Batemans sister guesting as his possibly fake life sister. If this world is worth a damn, it will get picked up somewhere. Showtime seems excited about it. Again, this show is to tv what Bird was to Bebop. It is so insanely good it should be required viewing for all humans. Please rent or buy the season one dvd if you havent seen it yet. You will love it.
