  1. Only 22? Im at 59, im set through november of 2010. Of course, you have a few years on me as far as collecting goes.
  2. Also, it was a rematch of the finals last year and preview of the finals this year. (and likely a couple more years as well.)
  3. I like the set more than the Jack Johnson set. Gary Bartz, and really everyone else, is one fire throughout. It is the leanest electric Miles I have heard, and the closest he got to a funk/rock band. Jarrett is particularly magnificent as well. Definitely ALOT more blues in his playing than he usually has. As much as I love the Jack Johnson set, I find it a bit hard to listen to for long period, unless you take out all the alternate takes. Its very easy to put on the Cellar Door for long periods. I also heard it on public radio last night while driving home from a christmas party.
  4. How are you a loser when you win the game? The man scores 62 on 31 shots and we still get hate. Im no Lobe lover, but if that game gives you a W, you cant complain. It was quite simply one of the most fantastic performances in NBA history. The man was dominant, and he showed why he should be shooting 30 shots a game.
  5. Andrew Bird - Mysterious Production of Eggs Spoon - Gimme Fiction My Morning Jacket - Z All fantastic.
  6. No ipod has had customizable EQ yet. Also, the shuffle option is in the settings menu. You can shuffle by album or by song. I often select shuffle by song and theny play an entire genre (like Hard Bop) to test my recognition skills. Of course, sometimes this makes me feel stupid as well.
  7. Do you have A Ghost is Born? That record was done before Nels joined the band, and at several spots it goes to pure guitar freak out a la Neil Young, but played by Tweedy. Im pretty sure what Nels des is not simply him diverging from the song, but actually what Tweedy had in mind. Personally, I love Nels' sound in the band.
  8. A free way to check him out is to sign up for emusic.com free trial. They have several good Nels Cline discs, and you get 50 free mp3s. Its an excellent service. I would try Intrumentals by the Nels Cline Singers or Interstellar Space by Nels Cline and Gregg Bendian.
  9. I think it makes alot of sense. Excellent contributions from both of you, and they are greatly appreciated. A few questions, 1. Why is seperation inevitable after unity is acheived? I would think seperation is IMPOSSIBLE after unity is achieved. 2. Was that a dig at Warne Marsh, or a compliment? 3. More of a comment, but probably the most difficult thing it the world is to explain WHY Interstellar Space is what it is. I dont have the musical knowledge that you guys do, but I do have some. Regardless, hearing the album gives me a very similar response. It just plain is to the point where it just fucks up any paltry existence that I try to string together. To try to understand it completely let alone explain it is WAY beyond my abilities, and really anyone elses. But, Jim and Larry, you have come as close as is probably possible. I really need to give the Half Note more of a listen as well.
  10. Finally got a listen and I must say I was less impressed than I thought I would be. I have seen him play quite well, but I think his 'personality' is all over this album. And to me, his personality is of a man trying to paly the part of a musician, and essentially a faker. Obviosuly my previous biases (or, accurate assessements I would say) may have carried over, but this album is pretty weak imo. He sounds like an actor playing the part of a blues musician. Sure, he learned some licks, but he doesnt understand the language of the blues or what the blues REALLY is. I think most of the buzz is based off how bad most people viewed his previous work. I should also mention that I saw him play live with Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. It truly was embarrasing to have him on a stage with Herbie, Kenny Garrett, Marcus Miller, and others. I think his blues playing is ok, but his funk/jazz playing is downright excruciating. Different strokes.
  11. I think length of cuts is probably the first thing they look at. Occasionally they do get it wrong, or give multiple options. I know itunes thinks Coltrane live in japan disc 3 is some type of trance/techno cd. Some programs give you a list of options to choose from.
  12. A friend of mine once had a copy of Led Zeppelin's Coda which had what I can only describe as German choral music on it. Definitely a confusing moment for any 15 year old. I wonder if anyone out there has a mix up that they havent noticed. Im sure to many newbies if the instrumentation is similar they might not notice.
  13. I bought a Panasonic ES-10 DVD recorder from Best Buy a few months ago and I love it. It was an open box item, so it only cost me 80 bucks, which is WELL worth it. (Especially for a history teacher.) The hard drive recorder would be pretty sweet too. I'm probably gonna upgrade to a DVR when my cable special runs out in February, though. Technology is cool.
  14. I bought myself these: Grado SR-80s. My first taste of anything remotely resembling hi-fi, and I think I'm hooked. Lots fun to listen to. Its like getting a bunch of brand new cds.
  15. Vijay Iyer, Piano Nasheet Waits, Drums John Lindberg, Bass I didnt make it but I heard some very good things about it.
  16. I notice Jack DeJohnette is up for best new age album as well. Havent heard that one.

  18. We sure could use him now.
  19. God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain, I'll say it again, God is a concept, By which we can measure, Our pain, I don't believe in magic, I don't believe in I-ching, I don't believe in bible, I don't believe in tarot, I don't believe in Hitler, I don't believe in Jesus, I don't believe in Kennedy, I don't believe in Buddha, I don't believe in mantra, I don't believe in Gita, I don't believe in yoga, I don't believe in kings, I don't believe in Elvis, I don't believe in Zimmerman, I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me, Yoko and me, And that's reality. The dream is over, What can I say? The dream is over, Yesterday, I was dreamweaver, But now I'm reborn, I was the walrus, But now I'm John, And so dear friends, You just have to carry on, The dream is over.
  20. One interesting thing that a fellow musician/Zappa freak I know pointed out was that with all Zappa's love of jazz and clear understanding of music theory, he never played changes. It was always just freak out, usually mixolydian or some other basic alteration.
  21. Listening to Waka/Jawaka right now and firgured this thread deserved a bump. His big band and instrumental music is just phenomenal. Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo are two of my favorite albums, and an excellent start for any jazz fan looking into getting into Zappa. If you use emusic, they are only a few tracks too!
  22. So you are mad that he deleted a thread that you thought was useless and old news?
  23. Bunch of wankers shredding some christmas tunes. Awesome stuff for a 16 year old when I first got it. Still some excellent tunes on there, Jeff Beck's "Amazing Grace", Eric Johnson's "First Nowell" and especially Steve Morse's "Joy to the World." This is also the only time of year where I can get away with blasting Coltrane (albeit only Greensleeves.)
