    Sweets at the Haig

Dan, I ordered the Fresh Sounds version. No extra tunes but supposedly the ones that are there, are restored to their " original" form. As Lawrence points out Bock was capable of several attempts at butcherey.. so who knows what and where these come from. I know this record well from numerous playings of a Japanese LP. Once I play the disc I'll know if there is indeed something different. The Jazz Factory lists three tracks from a concert wuith Benny Carter ( i think .. will have to re - check) they say nothing about restored tracks, therefore I think they will be from Bock manipulated issues.
  2. verve .. MY FAVOURITE RECORD COMPANY....... Their packaging ( plus price and generally insane reissue content of their disc) most often cancel my purchasing jones more than any other company. BUT.. I understand designers being told to come up with something "new and original" The person who should be kicked in the rear is the departmental head who signs off on these things. If he thinks this type of packaging enhances sales..... he ( or She... gotta be politically correct) needs a new job.
  3. Sweets at the Haig or the Inventive Mr. Edison has long been on my CD reissue wish list. My wishes have been answered.. sort of. A couple of months ago Jazz Factory announced a release of the album with three other tracks from an LA concert featuring Sweets with others. Now Fresh Sounds is offering the " unedited" Sweets at the Haig, claiming all initial releases of this music had tracks shortend by excluding trumpet and piano choruses.. anybody know if this is true, and if so where did Freshsounds get their material.. it must have been authorised from the Pacific Jazz vaults. I will have to check the times of each track on my LP to be sure. Interesting confrontation as many on these boards think Disconforme and Fresh Sounds are in league with each other.. but these simultaneous releases would tend to point otherwise.
  4. Are these being sold as Mosaic's but through Verve, or are they being represented as Verve releases? I understand they will look like Mosaics, and I did read the website comment. I suspect that it might be part of the agreement in obtaining verve material that they be distributed in combination with verve outside the USA. Who cares anyway? If this is a way to open up the verve catalogue that's O.K with me. If Mosaic decided to sell only through retailers that would be fine too, unless it compromised their approach to reissues.
  5. Mine were backordered too but they were combined with Jack Johnson which was also BO'd.???????? .all were pre-ordered. They were shipped Oct 9th however.
  6. This was a compilation of Columbia tracks put out especially for the Columbia record Club. The only other one that immediately comes to mind was a similar comp of Dave Brubeck material, which I think was called Right Now.
  7. I had this album. I felt it was PJ trying to cash in on Verves winning formula of post Wes Going Out of My Head recordings. Just as Verve themselves did with the Willow weep set. At the time the British Jazz press reviewed the Album badly due mainly to the addition of the Wilson charts to Bock to Bock which was by the Montgomery Brothers and considered to be one of Wes' first major solo outings.( The unadulterated "Bock" is now available on the Fingerpickin CD) The unalterated set was released on vinyl in one of those Blue Note double albums during the mid seventies. That recording session was also Freddie Hubbard's first recording, which I think also contributed to the bad reviews concerning the alteration of the tracks. I tend to be a bit of a purist about Jazz and prefer unaltered recordings, so I bought the album for the Bock session, but played it rarely. I felt it was not as unsuitable as the Willow set, probably due to Wilson, and I am not a great supporter of Jazz with Strings. I am perhaps not as narrow minded about these things now but both these sessions, the Half Note especially, were originally recorded as "blowing" sets and therefore in this case I still feel the addition of orchestrated over dubbed parts is detrimental to the music.
  8. That would be cool. Lets start am ORG Telemarketing system to answer questions like this. We'll have Aric randomly calling households across the US asking Coltrane and Jazz related questions.
  9. OOps so much for that.... Couldn't find the delete button in the edit mode.
  10. Octobers Jazz Review ( the British magazine) has a short article on Jazz Bulletin boards.. mainly on the demise of the Blue Note and the migration to these three. Each gets some positive and negative comments, in a more or less light hearted manner. Some posters might recognise themselves.. Aric makes news again as being " One red blooded male's input concerns famous Jazz musicians who have appeared in porn flicks...." And "If you are going to log on you need a handle. Things like the ' Musings of Miles", "Gene Harris Fanatic" and Freddie Freeloader are the norm. But apparently the " Stan Tracey" who posts at AAJ isn't that Stan Tracey, but the Graham Collier is. Confused? Welcome to life , come on line where nothing is ever as it seems
  11. Clark's Puck was one of the highlights that really helped " confirm" the suites association with Shakespeare. I read that Clark himself was upset at the way it had been left off the disc. They claim it will be put on a future Ellington CD as a bonus track, but somehow it wont be the same out of context.
  12. Same question here. I know he royally botched the SUCH SWEET THUNDER reissue, but what about Newport? If I remember from the discussion on Blue Note Board, several members of the boad challenged Schapps' version of history. In fact, he was accussed of making the facts fit in such a way that he comes out to be the hero, which some found unethical. Which facts? you might ask. I remember two main questions. 1. His version of how he found this magical tape of the complete performance. 2. His statement that there was friction between band members that night. Hope I got these right. Well you could argue that this " botches" the notes but the disc itself is far superior to the earlier versions. I see nothing wrong in havtng the studio versions and the actual concert performances altogether in one package. I suspect the initial comment was directed towards Thunder, which was spoiled somewhat by Schaaps selection of material... though a somewhat plausible excuse was reported in Jazz Journal, in which Schaap blamed Sony/Columbia for the errors.
  13. Montg.. as you have the Avid could you answer the following.. does it have the complete Honeysuckle Rose with Claytons three choruses, the Carney and Freddie Green solos.? As stated in another thread on this ( elsewhere).. The Schaap Goodman is the only CD I have ever bought that caused me to call the company and complain about it.
  14. Cote Blues Miles George Coleman,Herbie Hancock,Ron Carter, Tony Williams Juan Le Pins July 26 1963 All Blues Stella by Starlight Seven Steps to heaven If I were a Bell So What JMY 1010-2 JMY = Jazz Music Yesterday
  15. Yes but why weren't they in slim double cases... less shelf space.... Damn it why can't Mosaic be consistent Why wasn't it programmed chronologically Damn One star issue if ever there was.......
  16. Thanks Lon, I recall seeing that now, but passed as it was a" bits 'n pieces" set and I have most of it on LP. I was hoping that there might be a more comprehensive box from Pablo. Not all basie.. it would be huge, but maybe separate Big Band .. Small group sets. I don't see the Pablo years anywhere as important as the Deccas and Columbias, actually I prefer Basies small group output on Pablo to his Big Band efforts, but a " complete" set of either might be nice to have. Similarily I'm passing on the current Columbia box.. waiting on that day when ALL the Columbias are collected together.. gotta have those Earl Warren vocals.
  17. To have the best of early Basie the Deccas and the early Columbias are bothe essential. The RCA's are a bit secondary.. good but not quite up there with the band when Pres was in it. What PABLO Basie box, I haven't seen any indication of a Pablo period box set of Basie?
  18. From T.T.T... Somebody doesn't know Jack
  19. That was a Candid album too. Colours, I believe.
  20. Interesting .. If they buy them at current list, which if Mosaic is honest, should be the case. They then make about $10.00 profit selling them. Wonder what the discount price to stores would be when Mosaic " officially" sells the sets through them.. less than $39.99 ???
  21. EKE.. they should be on their way, if the email doesn't get upset again. I must have mistyped your business address as they are being marked ' Undelivered".. so they should be at your home email. All of the above except Nat King Cole Calloway Don Redman Choc Dandies I have that in other formats than Classics.
  22. EKE.. I'm posting this due to yopur comments about your computer. I emailed info to your office address today, copied myself but it didn't arrive. Bewildering problems with the email accounts. Ultimately it'll get there.. one way or another.. Oh and I still have 5 more to send.. so read the emails carefully.. I think there'll be a bit duplication.
  23. Just got back from my PO box , got the Daedalus catalog. There are some good items in those Past Perfect singles. They sem to have reissued some of the Candids The Benny Bailey " Hard Sock Dance" was the Candid " Big Brass" The Eric Dolphy Quiet Please" seems to be a culled from Candids Abbey Lincoln, Booker Litte and Mingus The Don Ellis is his Candid Quartet recording The Eldridge seems to have the Newport Rebels sides Others are taken from early Verves These seem worth investigating further to determine just what is on them.
  24. These box sets show up in the Seattle area in a group of book stores calle " Half Price Books" they sell used books and lots of cut out books. I bought the Ella box as it had some Frankie Newton participation that I wanted and the price was right for those tracks. The packaging is " cheap" but OK.. but the main problem is that there is absolutely no discographical information. If this is important to you, you had better be aware of the tracks and the musicians involved, or have access to a discography of the people who interest you. Also the tracks, in the Ella, at least seem to be scattered across the discs randomly, no chronological sequence, which, considering she sang many of the songs moire than once, makes sorting the data out a bit difficult. All the tracks are over 50 years old though.. to escape copyright considerations.. which helps a bit. I suspect this is true of the other PP boxes and discs. Good cheap introduction to an artists you might want to try, but possibly "collectors" can find the same stuff better presented elsewhere.
  25. Both the Cooper and Brookmeyer sets offer some hard to find sessions. Most have only been available on vinyl. Strangely some of the Coopers ( Jazz at Cal Tech etc) showed up recently in the local used vinyl bins... could there be a Mosaic purchaser dumping his vinyl in the neighborhood? JaDa from Traditionalism.. has been issued.. it is on the vinyl copy I have.. but for some reason it was left off the CD issue
