I just commented on this in the Mulligan/Hodges thread.. guess it came without the insert.. maybe the disc should have cost $1.00 less than the Hodges, but hell, it does have the fake Obi strip
-
Provided the price is right.. I have avoided Verve because I don't like their packaging, nor their pricing. These last I bought because I wanted the music and at $8.39 O. K. But why the fake Japanese issue look Fake Obi strip????? really makes you wanna buy.. true collectors item..... folded up note sheet which no doubt is an English translation of the English notes ( they left it out of the Giuffre.. on purpose???? or was I short changed???? The Bastards.... The Hodges was the only Verve " Mulligan Meets" that I never owned.. in the Lp days I thought it was overpriced... really short playing time I know it's the music that counts, but about 30 mins music??? thank the big Guy it wasn't one of their $18.99 specials. That being said I agree with White Lightenings review of the music Question why is the photo quality of the Giuffre cover so poor.. was the original LP that bad????

Another Couple who will go to great lengths for a GOOD piece of Cheese Double Glouchester.... anyone?

Tenor or Alto players, who play Alto or Tenor

Well as the thread has gone beyond Tenors and Alto's The Mulligan meets Getz album on verve.. the two switch instruments for half the album. So well known, I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet. Also on the Limelight Mulligan.. Something Borrowed, mulligan plays alto. -
As Berigan, the addict, points out this is more of a historical set, allowing you to follow the development of Berigan the trumpet player. I for one am glad to have this collected together. I used to buy Frank Froeba etc. collections just to get the Berigan bits.. believe me you get a lot more dross that way.. so the Mosaic is a plus for me Remember these were not necessarily considered Jazz or even Swing bands.. most of these records were attempts at the POP music of the day.. our Moms 'n Dads liked some strange songs.. or the writers and record promoters thought they did. We are interested because occasionally a major Jazz star to be, gets to blow a chorus ( or half chorus). Once again buying this because it is a Mosaic and if you are unfamiliar with Berigan and the music from this era, can be a dangerous purchase. Disc 7 is some of the best Berigan on record, and closest to typical Jazz, but unless you want to examine to Bunny's recording career, the tracks can be found on many single and two disc comps. Mosaics are for collectors of specific artists.. Berigan is worth collecting that way. I read that part of Berigan's Big Band failure while at RCA was because the company had at least two other major Big Bands.. Miller and Dorsey, and they gave the best songs to them, not wanting Berigan to record the same tune and hence dilute sales by the " stars", so even though the music does improve and become of more "jazz" interest.. Berigan seemed plagued by crappy songs throughout his whole career.

Candid have just reissued the Lee Konitz album.. Tenor Lee, A trio album with Lee exclusively on tenor supported by Jimmy Rowles and Michael Moore. -
Yes you are. The comments were not laid at your doorstep because of your battle with Aric, but because of your stupid multiple posts of the album... uselesly eating up space and basically destroying a Warne Marsh thread... which might have been your intent as it was started by Aric. Your response was that you were just " having fun".. but now that you have a supporter in Mike.. you go back to the self righteous mode... Had you posted once.. your point would have been made.. as it is.... you named it. funny ...isn't it

I see your level of humour is about the same as those you rage against.

Chris.. it's Beryl Bryden, who I thought you might have encountered in your " Trad " days.. actually for those wondering, the traditional Jazz that chris was invoved in, wasn't technically european Traditional Jazz. Trad to that had something of a stigma like Smooth Jazz has today, or at least to most board members. Beryl died fairly recently. Neva wasn't that great but I was looking for images of British or british connected jazz women Shuold put Ottlie up there.

and this is all I could find of this lady

Yes indeed and you can probably identify this singer and "expert" on the washboard.....

couldn't find the NAKED image this time.

more or less, one of my hometown girls who made it big.. in British Jazz circles at least

You could be banned from this board for that comment

Now I know what the other album is. The VSP series were all compilations of various verve albums I actually have that one somewhere because at the time they came out there wasn't much reissue program of complete Verve albums going on Most were just the artists name I thought it was called Johnny Hodges.. but it is a comp from other albums.

The early Heath band.. predominately pre 60's is the way to go After that the band headed for more of an Easy Listening type mode.. re working old swing era tunes and hits of the day. The British Vocalion label is putting out Twofer CD the best to fit your request would be Vocalion CDLK 4153 Ted Heath at the London Palladium combines two albums from 53 and 54 The openin Champ and the Hawk Talks should sell you on it There is a third Palladium album, but it is coupled on disc with a much later Swing Session.. good but not up to this disc. After that the better Vocalions are CDLK4124 Strike Up the Band / the Fats Waller Album..( formed around Fats' London Suite) CDLK4110 Gershwin for Moderns / Rodgers for Moderns There are also 4 albums on Hep CD's that fit the bill Listen to My Music.. vols 1 -4 these are made up of studio and broadcast recordings from Heaths early years when the band was really trying to be a JAZZ band. BUT go for that Palladium album first.

I only have Blue Notes It is from three different sessions in 1966 Aug 15 Blue Notes Say it again Aug 19 I Can't Believe that You're in Love Broadwalk L.B. Blues oct 24 Rent Cuty Sometimes I'm Happy The Midnight sun will never set Sneakin' up on You there are slight changes in the band per date All these tracks have only appeared, it would seem, on this album. therefore it's not a comp to me Don't know the other album.. even the title seems "new" to me. ( Say it Again was included on a British MGM comp)
