Actually, I believe the Zen ZCD-200 CD player did use the same Tascam CD-200 I'm considering. According to the Decware website, even the newer Zen ZCD-240 "uses the same high-quality TEAC-made CD drive designed for audio as other models in the CD-200 series." I'm assuming that this is an endorsement of the Tascam, at least as far as the transport is concerned.

Looks like Felser needs a new boat

It's not a boat, dear boy, it's a yacht. Whenever I feel a tax headache coming on, I do this to make myself feel better! -
Hey Lon, any opinions on the Tascam or Onkyo CD players I mentioned?
-
I'm glad you chimed in, Scott. After much searching, I discovered that the Tascam might actually employ a 16-bit DAC. In contrast, most cd players proudly advertise their DACs, touting the superior sound of a particular Burr Brown, Cirrus Logic or Wolfson chip, all of which are 24-bit/192 kHz. Any thoughts on this discrepancy? Why would Tascam use a 16-bit chip and omit this fact from their advertising?

I found out that these units do have different transports. Your comes with a Teac CD-W5600S, while the CD200 carries a Teac CD-5020A. Both are supposedly designed specifically for audio purposes versus conventional computer drives. I searched for reported problems with your transport but came up empty handed. Anybody else out there want to offer their own "ca-chunk-a-chunk" theory?
-
Thanks for the speedy reply. That "ca-chunk-a-chunk" sounds very annoying indeed. Has it always made that sound, and does it "ca-chunk" every time you play a CD? I'll do a search to see if this is a common problem. Most likely I'll be buying from Amazon, so no worries about returns.

Does anyone have any experience with Tascam CD players? I've read some good things about the CD-200, especially its upgraded TEAC CD-5020A transport. Stereophile said, "For people who want a dead-quiet, industrial-quality, reliable disc-spinner CD transport for not much money at all, the CD-200 is a bargain." The other player I'm considering is the popular Onkyo C-7030. Thoughts?

How many "archival releases" are we talking about? Has anyone reviewed the forums for new releases and reissues to identify the number of titles that would likely qualify for this proposed archival forum? If it's only a handful over a period of months, is there really a need for it?

Stan Freberg, a humorist whose sprawling imagination fueled a multifaceted career that included pretty much inventing the idea of using satire in commercials, died on Tuesday in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 88. Mr. Freberg was a hard man to pin down. He made hit comedy records, voiced hundreds of cartoon characters and succeeded Jack Benny in one of radio’s most prestigious time slots. He called himself a “guerrilla satirist,” using humor as a barbed weapon to take on issues ranging from the commercialization of Christmas to the hypocrisy of liberals. NY Times obit I loved his Dragnet parodies, featuring June Foray. Thanks, and rest in peace Stan. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUdFLyNCeI4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWunj7Yw3PQ

The most popular beer in every country

We used to call it "skunk beer". The green bottles don’t block ultraviolet light. Reportedly, it only takes a few seconds of direct exposure to create a chemical reaction with the bitter hops. -

What seems to be the problem here? Dave is a new member who has contributed to several discussions over the past few months. He's also a musician who has provided links to free classes he's offered, and now a link to a performance featuring another musician he thinks highly of. If you believe his post is inappropriate say so and/or report it. Otherwise, it might be better to keep your snide comments to yourself. I've been guilty of this kind of behavior in the past, and I've found it doesn't contribute positively to our community.

I only recently became aware of McGann, and I like what I've heard. So far, I've got McGann and Playground, and I'll likely download more of the ten titles offered by Rufus Records on Bandcamp.

Barron-Holland: Art of Conversation - does it go to 11?
sonnymax replied to Fer Urbina's topic in Discography
I can confirm that there are only 10 tracks on this recording. -
Bob's show has been the only jazz program during the week on Boston's public radio stations for a few years now. I should have listened to him more often than I did. His absence will be deeply felt by jazz fans across the country. RIP Bob.

Happy Pi Day! It is a big deal. It's irrational, it's transcendental (like the number itself). It's an opportunity for kids to have fun with math. The fact that this particular Pi Day only comes once a century is particularly noteworthy. Of course, if you really want to celebrate it right, you can do something today at 26 minutes and 53 seconds after 9 o'clock (3.141592653...). Now that's a lotta pi! It's also Einstein's birthday. Of course, my favorite way of celebrating Pi Day is .... well, Al has the right idea.

There may be a problem with Audacity if you are using it for mp3 files. If you open an mp3 file and re-save it as an mp3 file, I am almost positive that it will compress an already-compressed file. The only way I've gotten good results using Audacity is to rip to .wav files, open & edit in Audacity and then "Export" to VBR Q1 mp3. Correct, as usual. You need mp3 audio editing software like mp3DirectCut. It features basic editing functions, including a tag editor, but it doesn't re-encode the mp3 file.

Finally pushed too far (MS Office)

If I understand it correctly, you're not actually making a phone call on your iPad, but through your iPad. You still need an iPhone, and both your iPhone and iPad have to be connected to the same wireless network. And yes, I believe these are FaceTime calls. The same process also works with the latest generation iPod Touch and iMac running Yosemite. -
Nothing wrong that I can see.

Sonos, anyone here have this or think of getting one?

Would it have killed them to at least put the BN logo on it? Hell, I have pint glasses that feature the BN logo. Now they are cool.
