  1. At this point, it's probably downright stupid of me to admit that I was one of the people who was annoyed from time to time with the sheer volume of aloc's miscellaneous threads. More often than not, they were about random things he found on the web that others here weren't particularly interested in, as evidenced by the fact that rarely did anyone respond to the OP. I don't believe the few comments I made about about this habit of starting three, four or more such threads a day were necessarily "snarky", but some may have been, and for that I apologize. What did turn quite ugly was the backlash against such criticism, which targeted specific members and became quite personal. I'll welcome aloc back if he decides to contribute to the board again. Personally, I'd prefer that he try to create and participate in discussions that engage other members, rather than just "cut and paste" something from the web. Again, that's just my personal opinion, and I'll withhold any negative comments if old habits persist. In the end, I hope there's enough room in our community to allow for different voices to express themselves without the unnecessary vitriol.
  2. He continues to post elsewhere on the web, including his own blog. Perhaps he was offended by the feedback he received about his excessive posts about things that were of little interest to most members.
  3. IIRC, it is a term of endearment earned by the fact that DG has been one of the few online sellers where jazz fans like us can find import titles, cut-outs, or new releases at fairly reasonable prices with good customer service. Hence, "Dusty has a bunch of the new CDs I want. There goes my paycheck, the bastards."
  4. That's not necessarily true. Larry, would you be willing to share the link to the site you found? We can check it out and give you more specific feedback, as well as offer some suggestions on where you can find what you're looking for. This is the site: http://audiko.net/ I'll probably go the ITunes route. When I clicked on one of the ringtone choices, my WOT add-on (a safe-browsing tool) blocked my entry with the following warning: "This website appears on a third-party blacklist". Definitely sounds like something to avoid.
  5. Actually, it's very easy to make your own ringtone for the iPhone if you have the desired song in your iTunes library. Check this out: http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-to-make-ringtones-for-iphone/#!zjSCN

  7. When I bought a new car last year, I said "what the hell" and purchased this vanity plate: BEBOP1 Hands down, the funniest failed plate among our swing-loving brethren has got to be this one:
  8. It's available for download by Verve at iTunes, Amazon, etc.for 6.99.
  9. Jim, thanks for taking the time to listen closely to this song, and for your in-depth comments. I agree that the piano and other possible overdubs are probably at the heart of the "discord" I was hearing. Dan, I'd be interested in hearing your reactions after a closer listen to this track.

  11. "Behind every successful man is a woman. Behind her is his wife." "The secret of life is honesty and fair dealing. If you can fake that, you've got it made." "I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book."
  12. I agree with Cliff. These are artists who created and performed music that a lot of us really enjoyed. Focusing on their physical appearance is shallow, something one sees in tabloids while waiting in line at the grocery store. To find a thread here that furthers this kind of discussion is disappointing. How about creating some threads that expose the natural process of aging in some of our favorite jazz artists?
  13. This material has been reissued so many times, including fairly recently releases by various Andorran labels. Is there anything that makes this set special?
  14. Room for one more Flanagan? Getting back to the OP, Tommy Flanagan is my favorite of the Detroit bop-mainstream pianists. He left an incredible legacy of trio recordings, every one of which is easily recommended to anyone who appreciates this genre. This one is especially good, imo: I will always remember Flanagan's shows in Boston every year in March a few weeks before his birthday. Great music, and a wonderful man.
  15. I may be wrong, but isn't the inability to play CD-rs or CDs that are in less-than-perfect condition one of the signs that a player is on it's way out?
  16. That does not answer my question.
  17. What do you find particularly scary about this incident?
  18. At present, no major news agencies are carrying this story. Roy's Wiki entry, which had earlier noted his death, has removed any mention of his passing. Only JazzTimes features an obituary, attributing the news to "multiple reports on social media sites," while at the same admitting "The cause and place of death were not reported." All of this painfully familiar, isn't it?
  19. The trouble with many automatic drip coffee makers is that they do not heat the water sufficiently (195-205 degrees F) to brew a great cup of coffee. Before I began brewing with a French press exclusively, I had great success with the Capresso MT600. The current model appears to have everything you're looking for and more: (10-cup, 24-hour programmable timer, stainless steel-lined heating system, stainless steel carafe, permanent GoldTone filter, charcoal water filter, etc.). Check it out here.
  20. Board down? Not down, just bored.
  21. "I'm guessing what reaches people about saxophonist Charles Lloyd's ballad playing is that all those multi-noted flutters can still fool you into thinking you're hearing John Coltrane. Only now, it's Coltrane as we might imagine him sounding had he lived to be Lloyd's current age of 75: calmer and at peace with the world." Actually, Davis' remark pretty much sums up my listening experience of Lloyd. I don't presume that other people agree, but more than a few guests at my home have mistaken Lloyd for Coltrane. Maybe all of this makes me an ass, just not a presumptive one.
