  1. I can't speak of Budvar, but anyone who can't tell the difference between Stella Artois and Heineken should have their taste buds surgically removed and set afire on top of a dump heap. On the other hand, this guy likes Heineken:

    Norah Jones

In trying to understand Allen's behavior in this thread, I think that looking for some hidden meaning in Norah Jones is missing the point. Sadly, I think this statement probably relates to far too many of Allen's experiences as a musician. No one can deny that he is a very talented artist and a notable musicologist. What kind of rewards has he received for all of his efforts? What must it be like to repeatedly see others who are arguably less talented and less devoted to their craft reap the benefits of large-scale marketing and an audience that doesn't demand enough from the music they typically enjoy? Those of us working in education, healthcare, social services and other underpaid and unappreciated fields surely have had similar ("What the fuck?!") moments like this. In the past, I've been openly critical of Allen's bashing of a few popular artists. Although I don't agree or approve, I'm trying to be more understanding and appreciative of artists like him who strive to create and share something of value, something that can elevate and enhance our experience in life. Yes, Allen can be a smart ass at times and a pain-in-the-ass at other times, and I don't believe in necessarily giving artists a "free pass" regarding their personal behavior. Instead, I'm suggesting that one might want to pause, reflect, and try to empathize before drawing any conclusions.
  4. It still seems a bit odd to me that despite no other recordings of the tune by Hampton, and few (? I'm still not sure on this) recordings by others; and the fact that this album was not exactly widely circulated (neither the Prestige nor the MPS albums seemed to turn up much, and likewise for the eventual CD issue), the tune not only has a very strong ring of familiarity to me, but is a vehicle for high school and college ensembles. I guess I may just have to get over it. Anybody else have thoughts? Slide's arrangements for large ensembles are much revered and readily available. Do a search of his "charts" or "arrangements" and you'll appreciate why educational ensembles might be drawn to his work.
  5. Music was such a big part of Haden's life from the very beginning (that's little Charlie sitting on the piano). He contributed so much to the music, and in so doing shared so much with us. May he rest in peace, and may his music continue to enrich our lives.
  6. Probably my least favorite of the Rocky movies. More importantly... "I pity the fool who don't like my breakfast cereal!"
  7. Bad enough to be called "Fats" because of your weight, but Theodore Navarro was also nicknamed "Fat Girl", reportedly due to his cherubic face and high voice. Ben Webster's bulging eyes earned him the nickname "Frog", but he was also called "The Brute", purportedly because he could become violent when drunk. The staff at All About Jazz compiled a list of jazz nicknames and their origins in 2004: AAJ
  8. Certainly not the meaning I had in mind. I admire people like Wallach partly for their ability to put their craft above things like fame and fortune, exploring and perfecting their art in different mediums, leaving a body of work that is more than simply entertaining - it elevates us as a culture. In "today's world" where many "stars" are famous for "being famous", a true artist like Wallach is to be celebrated and mourned.
  9. Eli Wallach, who starred alongside Hollywood's greatest stage, screen and TV actors, has passed away at age 98. His movie credits include supporting roles in the Magnificent Seven, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, The Misfits, Lord Jim and The Godfather III. However, he was most at home on stage, where he appeared in classics like Tennessee Williams’ The Rose Tattoo and Camino Real, Eugène Ionesco’s Rhinoceros, and The Typists and The Tiger by Murray Schisgal. 17. I understand the commentator's opinion, i.e. something that is melodic or tuneful. Strictly speaking, the melody is the part of a composition that is distinguished from the harmony and the rhythm.
  18. GA, You may find this CNET article helpful: Which Roku streamer should you buy?
  19. Bunny Yeager, a model-turned-photographer whose images of a scarcely clad Bettie Page, embodying feral sexuality and winsome naïveté all at once, helped propel Ms. Page to international stardom as a midcentury pinup queen, died on Sunday in North Miami, Fla. She was 85. The cause was congestive heart failure, said her agent, Ed Christin. Ms. Yeager, who took up her art by accident, was one of the world’s most celebrated photographers of female nudes and near-nudes of the 1950s and ’60s. She is widely credited with helping turn the erotic pinup — long a murky enterprise in every sense of the word — into high photographic art. New York Times obit It also deserves mentioning that Bunny was a beautiful and successful model before taking her place behind the camera.
  20. I don't necessarily think that the "remastered for iTunes" program is directly aimed at "selling the same music to the same people again and again". Many of the people who depend on iTunes and other download sites as their prime source of music don't have large CD collections, so they might not already own the music. Face it, people like us who own thousands of jazz CDs are a dying breed. The future is digital downloads and streaming services.
  21. I agree. Not essential, but quite enjoyable.
  22. Don't you live in or near Manhattan? There are no audio stores there? What about the Stereo Exchange, Park Avenue Audio, B&H, Adorama, In Living Stereo, the Harman Store, Lyric Hi-Fi, not to mention several Best Buy locations? I agree there are fewer choices these days, but it would appear that people like you and I still have some places to go when we're in the market for stereo/av equipment.
  23. Same here. An offering from Columbia House record club issued on their Columbia Musical Treasuries label
  24. Greetings all! Has the LP pictured below has ever been reissued on CD or available as a digital download? This version of Ntu Troop includes Woody Shaw, Albert Dailey, Rashied Ali & Bob Cunningham. The album was recorded in Baltimore at a Left Bank Jazz Society concert in 1969 and released on Milestone MSP 9027. In case you haven't heard it, I've included one of the tracks, Rise, below. Thanks in advance for any information. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nb7ocL3DxuE
  25. I think you're misreading this promo. Their "goal" is to make every title available. That includes titles that will be available for streaming on iTunes Radio, as well as titles that can be purchased for download. The "100" refers to the BN titles that supposedly are being remastered exclusively for the iTunes store (a dubious distinction that doesn't exactly promise the best sound).
