  1. Not a joke per se, but it is baseball humor. While announcing a game, Curt Gowdy noticed a couple who kissed each other after every pitch, saying "Isn't that cute? He kisses her on the strikes, and she kisses him on the balls."
  2. Most of these symbols are neither hidden nor subliminal (i.e., below the threshold of consciousness), but instead are the product of creative design. Funny how some people are amazed or suspicious of intelligence and creativity.
  3. Mar 23 Austin, TX Mar 24 Austin, TX day concert, then Dallas, TX for a double bill with Dennis Gonzalez Mar 25 TBD Mar 26 Detroit, MI Mar 27 Buffalo, NY Mar 29 Philly, PA Mar 30 Baltimore, MD
  4. Just found this on amazon, too - what label is this on? Blue Note. It came out nearly three years ago.
  5. What's so "sad" about Stitt's Ellington set? I agree it's not among his best, but it's much more than competent and quite enjoyable to my ears. Recorded for Verve in 1960, it features a great rhythm section (the bass player you forgot is none other than Paul Chambers), and you certainly can't fault the quality of the material. Sure, it wasn't released until 1973 under the title Previously Unreleased Recordings (see below), but I think that had more to do with the sheer volume of his recording output at the time rather than the quality of the music. Btw, you had it backwards, Sonny plays tenor on three tracks, alto on the remaining five. Finally, I think you'll find that few, if any, members of this board consider Sonny to be nothing more than a "Bird imitator". That's the kind of ignorant or ill-informed opinion that you may find elsewhere, but not here.
  6. Yeah, one Saturday a month at their "back-alley office with very low rent in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood. The space is very hard to find, and was previously used as an apartment by a low-profile prostitute." I think if you visited them there, you'd remember it! No interior pictures of the store at 1180 N Milwaukee Ave. that I can find, but here's a street view of the current storefront (they were on the 2nd floor where the "Young Chicago Authors" program is now located: DG historical site.
  7. Are you really saving money with in-wall cables? They are generally more expensive than "regular" speaker wire because their special jacket/insulation is designed to reduce the burn rate and the spread of toxic gases in the event of a fire.
  8. According to the website, DG moved to Wicker Park at 1180 N Milwaukee Ave. in the summer of 1997. Prior to that, they were running the business out of an apartment on the south side. They opened at their current location in 2001. So, maybe you are thinking of the Wicker Park store.
  9. Sadly, the Roni Ben-Hur show has been cancelled. I was really looking forward to that one.
  10. You're thinking of the Jazz Record Center in NYC.
  11. I could be wrong, but I think you're only allowed one user name per registration. PM Jim Alfredson and he'll let you know what's possible and how to do it. FWIW, I think you can come up with a better moniker than the Climate Prediction Center.
  12. At this point, it's probably downright stupid of me to admit that I was one of the people who was annoyed from time to time with the sheer volume of aloc's miscellaneous threads. More often than not, they were about random things he found on the web that others here weren't particularly interested in, as evidenced by the fact that rarely did anyone respond to the OP. I don't believe the few comments I made about about this habit of starting three, four or more such threads a day were necessarily "snarky", but some may have been, and for that I apologize. What did turn quite ugly was the backlash against such criticism, which targeted specific members and became quite personal. I'll welcome aloc back if he decides to contribute to the board again. Personally, I'd prefer that he try to create and participate in discussions that engage other members, rather than just "cut and paste" something from the web. Again, that's just my personal opinion, and I'll withhold any negative comments if old habits persist. In the end, I hope there's enough room in our community to allow for different voices to express themselves without the unnecessary vitriol.
  13. He continues to post elsewhere on the web, including his own blog. Perhaps he was offended by the feedback he received about his excessive posts about things that were of little interest to most members.
  14. IIRC, it is a term of endearment earned by the fact that DG has been one of the few online sellers where jazz fans like us can find import titles, cut-outs, or new releases at fairly reasonable prices with good customer service. Hence, "Dusty has a bunch of the new CDs I want. There goes my paycheck, the bastards."
  15. That's not necessarily true. Larry, would you be willing to share the link to the site you found? We can check it out and give you more specific feedback, as well as offer some suggestions on where you can find what you're looking for. This is the site: http://audiko.net/ I'll probably go the ITunes route. When I clicked on one of the ringtone choices, my WOT add-on (a safe-browsing tool) blocked my entry with the following warning: "This website appears on a third-party blacklist". Definitely sounds like something to avoid.
  16. Actually, it's very easy to make your own ringtone for the iPhone if you have the desired song in your iTunes library. Check this out: http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-to-make-ringtones-for-iphone/#!zjSCN

  18. When I bought a new car last year, I said "what the hell" and purchased this vanity plate: BEBOP1 Hands down, the funniest failed plate among our swing-loving brethren has got to be this one:
  19. It's available for download by Verve at iTunes, Amazon, etc.for 6.99.
  20. Jim, thanks for taking the time to listen closely to this song, and for your in-depth comments. I agree that the piano and other possible overdubs are probably at the heart of the "discord" I was hearing. Dan, I'd be interested in hearing your reactions after a closer listen to this track.
