  1. Just found a video of Melvin:
  2. Jazzmessengers still had it on their lists, so I pulled the trigger after receiving an unexpectedly large tax refund today. Ihave most of it on other reissues but want the newly discovered Basie sides, the Basie piano features, and the Dicky Wells session.
  3. Regardless of sound, my opinion is that too much overlap with the Centennial RCA box should be avoided.

  5. Received this today: This is wild. You'd never expect Rhyne to play a stack of four keyboards, in a programm from standards to Weather Report type fusion jazz. Rhyne plays bass with the left hand, it sounds almost like a double bass, and the other three keyboards with the right, sometimes with piano sounds from pseudo-acoustic to electric, sometimes with synth colours. He could have matched Zawinul if he wanted to persuade that type of music. All players are excellent. This is a severely underrated record.
  6. The note at the bottom applies only when all tracks of the session are on one release. Whenever tracks from a session are scattered over several releases, they are listed under the respective track entries.

  12. This Doles was the son of Johann Sebastian Bach's better known pupil of the same name. This collection and three vocal pieces are all that survived. He was a lawyer composing during his time off. Nice music and playing beyond the early classical clichés, with a personal style. Well played (this pianist just completed her complete recording of Kozeluch's sonatas) but recorded with a little too much room ambiance.
  13. Cal Tjader, of course .... There is only one Concord LP and a very rare Fantasy 45 missing in my collection. Not every issue, but every recording. I had an offer for the 45 from a private collector, but $ 75 plus shipping was more than I wanted to spend. The Eiji Kitamura LP on Concord will be rather easy to get during the next months. I have almost everything with Don Patterson, and Melvin Rhyne. Artists with rather smal discographies that I completed are: Carla White, King Pleasure Artist that I am trying to complete: Mongo Santamaria
  14. Conrad Steinmann's fascinating attempt on ancient Greek and Oriental flute music traditions. How do you like / what do you think of this? I saw Qeyras live with these and found his playing not very special.
  15. DOMAINE DE L'ESTAGNÈRE blanc 2019 Cité de Carcassonne Indication Géographique Protégée Cuvée of Colombard and Chardonnay - very interesting. Hints of cognac aroma.

  17. This afternoon, discs 1 & 17, 14. This pianist was a monster technician and is very very close to the early 2oth century French composers. Ravel, Debussy, Poulenc, Milhaud told her how to play their music. Indispensable!
  18. This afternoon. This borders on commercial Latin dance orchestra performances, very short tracks, engaged playing of the rhythm section but Cuban or Puerto Rican versions of Brazilian grooves soind stiff incomparison. Puente plays some vibes and marimba. I'd say only for diehard Puentists. Need to give that a spin these days. But they could have spelled Jimmy Woode's name correctly.
  19. Lord never states track composers - one of the great disadvantages of his site. I rely on the BRIAN database basic set of tunes, which is correct in 90% of all cases. You have no idea how often some titles were used. I know a lot of classical music, but dislike 19th century Italian opera. And I do not have the time to google every unidentified tune title. Not to think of what ads I would receive if I used google - use startpage. It does not track your searches. --------------------------------------------------------------- That said, guitarist Jack Grassel answered my questions, told me some nice things about Rhyne, and led me to a copy for sale. I am really looking forward to this disc, as Rhyne played a set of keyboards instead of a B3 - during his years in Milwaukee he didn't even own one, I've been told, and the instruments provided for gigs often were out of tune or partly defective. As Grassel puts it: "The main idea of this CD was for the 3 of us to enable and push Mel out of the "traditional jazz organ player" box others always put him in." It was recorded in 2003, not 1998 as the Lord disco states. Case closed. My Rhyne disco will be on jazzdiscography.com in a few days.
