My wife understood my pains, so I made comparisons with some of the older CD versions I already had. The sound is more detailed, a bit more room ambience, softer and clearer at the same time. Not much, but noticeable. They did a good job. Belden's essay is a good read. In retrospect, it shows how influential and groundbreaking Herbie really was .... at the center of things, there is some - in my ears - very African way of treating rhythm and sound in his work, and some devices that were already there during his Blue Note years. Listen to the horn section licks he wrote. Herbie was very influential to me, so I do not regret getting this, even though I do not really like all of the music in the box.

For me Hogwood's recording of The Creation is as good as it gets. It has the necessary grand sound and agility at the same time. There is a DVD too, but it features some National Geographic videos or similar rather than the ensemble playing. I was not that fascinated by Gardiner's Die Jahreszeiten, would have to listen to it again. It's the work, not Gardiner's version, methinks ....

My copy arrived today, but as a Christmas gift from my wife, parcel still unopened ... otoh she wears her equivalent Xmas gift, a particular coat she had wanted, for two weeks already ....

It's also on the first Chronological Classics CDs of Wilson's band. 1945, that's all we know ... The master number was OR-159-A3 - the two tracks recorded May 21, 1945 had OR-126 and OR-128 - so It should have been recorded no sooner than July 1945.

I witnessed a three hour concert and always thought that Shakti's didn't really catch the brilliance of that evening. I have all three but never listen to them. The third was over-produced, IMO.

I love this one, as well as the organ date he recorded at the time in California with Paul Bryant and Joe Pass. More relaxed than your usual Griffin record, but that's perhaps the reason I like it so much.

Don't know that one ... but wins all prices with Coltrane and Lady Q, too! And that Concord album with Frank Foster pictured above is wonderful, get hold of it if you can! That one was issued under Bennie Green's name, "The Swingin'est" - but it may be reissued under somebody else's name, too. There was one under Gene Ammons's name, "Juggin' Around", but that subsituted a track. The complete session was six tracks, I have a twofer Blue Moon edition with all of them.

The Fresh Sound has all 3 LPs on 2 CDs - I must admit I never heard any of recordings. IIRC these are some of the few that Fantasy or Concord never got around to reissue. R.I.P.

What can you say ... a real great musician, dependable, and able to deliver a real hot solo when desired. I cherish that VeeJay Lp where he plays alongside Frank Foster and Gene Ammons and always wins the prize. R.I.P.

That Getz album has Haynes playing on just one track, and it's a string orchestra.

Hey - that Michael Schmidt was here in Wiesbaden some two years ago and was referred to me by a mutual friend. I recommended the Darmstadt Jazz Institute and gave him an interview about the local scene - a Texan of German descent researching a thesis on the German jazz scene - very nice guy. Even nicer to see some of the results of his work.

R.I.P. He was an ubiquitous presence on the scene from 1975 well through the 1980's, after that I lost sight of him. That quartet with percussionist Marcio Doctor from 1992, what label was that made for?

Same here - the Mulligan/Baker and Ammons/Lewis sets followed soon after. But I can't remember the year.
