Hip-O to release 1951-1960 Howlin' Wolf Chess 4CD-box
mikeweil replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Oh, I have plenty of these already -
Thanks - I have Audacity and will try.
-
Sorry for the delay - I can't remove the file information from some of the tracks, so the original track title and artist info will not be displayed in Windows media player .... the software I use last time which deletes this will not work on my new computer. We have guests over the weekend so my time is limited - I will try to figure this out on Monday. At least selecting and sequencing is done ... My sincere apologies.
-
Is that Gary Bartz on alto? Oh I see it is - didn't read your comments before listening.
-
Thanks for joining - download links will be pm'd Thursday or Friday.
-
What errors? Will type them down as soon as I find the time ...
-
You're all welcome - it's only the track sequence I'm still not quite done with.
-
Probably mine too. These were my introduction to Russell's work. He also made films about Bohuslav Martinu and Arnold Bax - a bit over the top, but brilliant! Those features on musicians were my first conscious encounter with his work, although I had seen Women in Love and others before.
-
I think his Blue Note debut, The Two-Headed Freap, is a nice album ... but he preferred a career as a studio keyboarder to that on the B3 circuit.
-
Probably not - just an odd choice for a cover photo.
-
I wish this band - which I saw live at least twice - was still around. This is a timeless album, as are their other two on MusicMasters.

I think that album is pretty much representative for Dell and his pianist, Carsten Daerr, who recorded more tribute albums after that - but whereas Dell's CD was a fresh idea, the tribute mania soon lost its artistic sense with too many albums released. Geisler doesn't play much on the album, his solo style ist rooted in Charlie Christian and sounds like a glimpse from the past on that album, but it's great that he approached this with an open mind. JPC sells that CD for six bucks .....
-
When Christopher Dell recorded his Kaempfert tribute album, he asked Geisler to participate - for a closer look at Geisler late in his career, this is indispensable.

The arrangements on What's Going On always caught my attention - I read his name, but never knew what else he had done ... R.I.P.

Received the box today, listened to most of it ... sound is good, slight improvement over the two 1980's CD of Tequila and Movin' that I have, and the Verve Jazz Sides twofer. I have none of the VMEs to compare ... Now that I've been reading the discographical credits, I understand why they left out the one version of Surrey with the fringe on top: It's an edit of the (lost) complete take made for the posthumous Willow Weep For Me LP. The longer original version was reconstructed as far as possible (some snippets of the session tape were lost in the edit) for the Verve Jazz Sides twofer, the new box includes this version, which is a minute longer because it still has the announcements and some more music in the themes. The credits on the twofer CD didn't make it as clear that the two versions were actually just two edits of the same take ... so, it's really a complete box set. I apologize for ranting ... Only complaints are some minor errors and typos in the discographical credits; that the track timings and personnel listings are found only on the facsimiles of the LP covers is a drag. There are no matrix numbers (which are of limited value as Verve attributed them after the LP sides were assembled). The new notes could have gone a bit further and cover the history of the posthumous releases .... But at the great low price I paid, I do not regret it. The more "commercial" sessions are not nearly as bad as I feared. Wes grooved the hell out of these tunes ... ... and the sidemen are great, especially the rhythm sections - Grady Tate on drums on most tracks, in excellent form.

Yes, November strikes hard this year ..... R.I.P. - one of the best European drummers of his generation.

Geez - this will be a hard winter season ... I saw him live many years ago - way out, but he was being so sincere and authentic ... it took a lot of courage to play like that, and he had it. People like him were rather substantial in encouraging me to go my own way, although I went in a totally different direction. R.I.P. Hans ... -
Same here ...
-
Gladly the last disc I wanted to include a track from arrived today - I think I will have the sequencing done by the weekend.
-
Highly individual drummer - what a loss ....

do you use your phone book?????
mikeweil replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The local phone book, yes (although my number is not listed, I have no idea why ...), especially when looking for a craftsman or special services - for numbers from other cities, I use the internet search teleauskunft.de - that's about all I need -

I will get me this sometime next year, but think I better start with the two Bear Family CDs, as I like to listen to music in chronological order ... -
Album Covers with Women on Wheels!
mikeweil replied to Bright Moments's topic in Miscellaneous Music
If stools like this had wheels, drummers would fall over all the time, believe me ... These are rubber feet a bit round at the bottom, not wheels. -
