Help on discography for Mosaic Flip Phillips.
mikeweil replied to Jazztropic's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Up - please have a listen - it sounds so much like Flip Philips and Slam Stewart - what do you think? -

In that respect, of course, you're perfectly right. -
Just came home from work, and what do I see ..... R.I.P., Mr. Sheldon. Definitely my top favorite west coast trumpeter - I'll trade one Sheldon for five Bakers any time. He had a very personal style of musical humor and imagination.

Okay, here you can download the 4 Star release of Empty Ballroom Blues - Big Beat Steve, will you please compare this to your Pacific 78? Thanks a lot! (link removed) -
rare Mastersounds/Wes discovery

Turns out I had both the Pacific Jazz and Kimberley versions on my external hard disc. The Pacific Jazz sounds definitely better, and is much like a Montgomery Brothers session with percussion added - both Roy Harte and Milt Holland are great (Holland was one of my early idols), but it can get to be a bit too much at times. Still, a must for Wes completists. -
Coltrane, Davis, Evans, Monk complete re-issues

Yes, but if one wants only Trane, one can get the Quintet box: -

No - the Miles Davis Quintet sessions were not in the big red box .... They didn't include as they had been made available on the Miles Box. As I have the Miles Davis box only on LP, I'm tempted if the price is right - I avoided those slipcase editions ZYX used to release like the plague. -

If all Prestige sessions with Coltrane are available on the three boxes, why reissue the big box? I don't get it. Especially if they reissue the box as is, I doubt they will use the remasters, as the sequencing in the old box is totally different. -

FS: Les McCann Sings CD w/Gerald Wilson
mikeweil replied to Ragu's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Disc arrived today in perfect condition, thanks. A nice musical surprise. McCann's voice misses the raspiness it showed ten years later that I like so much, but still very nice. I like the cvariety of settings: 4 big band tracks, 3 with strings, 4 trio, 1 with Groove Holmes and Ben Wewbster. -

... and another on Woody Herman's Atlantic live album. -
I can't help it, I think she's overrated. Her voice isn't too good, at least for my taste, and the way she's acting up is contraproductive. Let her sink and maybe recover.

I'm in for a download, too - move on, Dan!

Even Prestige had a handful of Latin or ethnic sessions - but never started a sub-label for it, contrary to Riverside with the Battle label.

The title could mean something like "the wind is gone" - Cengiz Coskuner is a rather successful romantic musician in Turkey. Must be an international release - can't think of an explicit cover like this in Turkey. At least you won't see this on his website... -

I'll go for it - I like McCann's voice and Wilson's arrangements. PM sent. -
I was lucky to hear Sam Jones in person with Eastern Rebellion - what a beautiful mahagony tone on the bass! I can second any of the recommendations above.

... and I got # 526! The sound is improved a lot over all previous CD issues I heard. But I still wish I hadn't sold my original Atlantic mono LP of The Comedy, which had a lot more punch. It would sound terrific with the mono cartridge I bought last year ... But this set is worth every cent. There is so much more detail audible in the recordings I was constantly surprised - and I know some of these records inside out, grew up listening to them.

Help on discography for Mosaic Flip Phillips.
mikeweil replied to Jazztropic's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
No need to apologize - it was me in the first place who derailed ... I need to hear that Pacific version - chronologically it was the first, if one can trust the discos. But: the 4 Star version, too, has a bowed bass solo with humming along that made me think of Slam Stewart! Was there any other bassist at this time humming along (Major Holley came later and sounds different. In addition, the pianist sounds a bit like Oscar Peterson and the tenor like Flip.of course - that Pacific label is not related to the later Pacific Jazz of Richard Bock. So maybe 4 Star bought these masters? I need to hear that and compare - can you make an MP3 of that Pacific version? I will upload mine next week and post a link. -
... and I can recommend the route Jsngry suggested. I am a musician, but not the one to constantly run after every student or gig, so I decided to take a day job. I'm in a transport service for handicapped people of all kinds. It makes you humble, and grateful for what you are and can do, you do plenty good deeds everyday, get the paycheck and learn there is always somebody who is off a lot worse than you are. Most people are great characters and really appreciate that you help them. Hang in there, Shawn, and stick around, please!

Help on discography for Mosaic Flip Phillips.
mikeweil replied to Jazztropic's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Exactly! Very obviously they're different. The Mosaic Box booklet states Esposito cut three versions of that tune, but I doubt they ever listened to the 4 Star 78, as this is an extremely rare record. They trusted the Jepsen disco, which must be mistaken, as I now own two sides from the Tjader bongo session he doesn't even list, and can confirm the 4 Star record of Empty Ballroom Blues must be from a different session. The tenor on that take could well be Flip Philips ... The way he sounds he was from the Brothers school - according to Lord this is the only session he ever recorded! Some pseudonym, maybe? Fascinating indeed! I was contacted by Esposito's son more than a year ago, but never heard from him again, neither did Tjaderbiographer - too bad, as he claimed to have digital files of all of his father's records - that's why I continued to look for these 78's. Meanwhile, a nephew or something like that of Esposito living in Italy contacted me - I will send him a copy of my transfers, as he wants to make them available on the web. I will place a link on this forum once they are out.
