  1. There was a difference between the LP and CD versions of the Mosaic. The CD version came out a while after the LP version and added those two tracks that had been discovered after the LP version had been issued. That new box set includes everything from the Mosaic CD version and adds two bonus tracks from the November 1, 1960 Newport Rebels sessions without Mingus among the players - they probably added them to avoid being accused of simply copying the Mosaic CD set. Since there is no other matching session to reissue them - except perhaps the Freedom Now Suite or the Abbey Lincoln disc - and one would have to buy other CDs and duplicate material, why not add them? They are: Cliff Walk 09: 41 T'ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do 07: 14 There is another one with Kenny Dorham, Oh Yeah Oh Yeah, and an alternate take of T'ain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do that's still missing from that session. I made my own CDR of the Freedom Now Suite adding them as bonus tracks. Candid would have served the collectors better if they had released CDs with completed sessions analog to the Mosaic discs instead of simply reissuing the original LPs and several other compilations of unreleased or scattered material, like the Reincarnation of a Lovebird, Mysterious Blues, Newport Rebels, The Jazz Life, and Candid Dolphy CDs - that makes eight (!) CDs just to get the Mingus material that easily fits on three. And they duplicated tracks along the way and made discographical errors in the credits ...
  2. I have only 7 of the single CDs - and I trust it will sound better, from what Michael Cuscuna wrote.
  3. So why in all the world didn't I already get me a copy???
  4. Ann = announcements? Then the tracks are all there. I will have to view it once more this evening to tell whether the Gigi Campi announcements are in the video or not. Will report.
  5. nw is the common denominator
  6. The CD runs 68 minutes, to be exact. Eleven tracks - how many do you have? The date is identical. Sure would like to see/hear these - I think I saw the Cologne 1969 on TV once. The Italian Schema/Rearward label should start releasing DVDs of the CBBB material!
  7. The situation has changed - since last Friday we have a bass player. The guy is half our age, studies classical bass besides teaching guitar and bass, grew up on fusion and is a slap bass expert but can read well, came to the audition prepared and played solos when asked, even though those tunes were knew to him and sometimes quite sophisticated - we'll try him. One advantage is that he can handle those thousands of jazz standards but has no set patterns about them in his mind like those players who have been doing them for decades. We hit a fine groove on Brazilian rhythms right away - the future looks bright, fellas! Thanks for your input!
  8. I suppose y'all have this DVD with an hour-long performance recorded for Czech TV? Sound is good, video too - the band in full-blown action.
  9. Am I correct to assume these performances were not released elsewhere?
  10. I love the music as well as the movie, which of course was far beyond its time. Is there a DVD of this by now?
  11. Looks as they're from Drevo's "Swing, Waltz, Swing" indeed. That whole album was reissued in 2008 by Rearward/Schema/Edizioni Ishtar. It's pretty nice (as is Drevo's other CB-related album, "Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie" (reissued by the same outfit earlier - my CD gives no year, but with RW105 as a catalogue nummer, it must have been among their earliest reissues, also it comes in regular a jewel case, opposed to the later cardboard boxes with booklet of jewel-case size and the most recent digipacks). Thanks - that confirms what I thought. Since I already have the two CBBB albums on Collectables or Koch Jazz CDs but don't have the two Drewo CDs, I'll go for the latter.
  12. I believe JazzLips is situated in Great Britain or elsewhere - Fresh Sound lists only a few CDs from their catalogue, where UK and German mail order shops list 20 or more - see here. I haven't heard this particular CD, but others from the label sounded fine.
  13. Thanks for posting this - this is the so-called old opera house in Frankfurt - I still get mad when remembering that I had a free ticket for the concert but couldn't go as I had a contract to play during a week-long dance workshop in Italy at the time ...
  14. I have red, blue, and green Fantasy vinyl, but this one tops them all! Does it have this cover?
  15. Zappa recorded some of Varèse's works with the Ensemble Modern, but due to some legal issues of either the Zappa or Varèse heirs (or both) a possible release is in the stars .... I have always loved Zappa's so-called "classical" works, I think I have them all, he has a musical tongue all of his own that comes through even in transcriptions of classical musicians, of which there are quite a few, e.g.: But these are essential:
  16. Got me a copy of Faces - this is new to CD, indeed! Great example of Boland's fabulous writing. FWIW - this JazzLips reissue combines all tracks of the Now Hear Our Meanin' (1-6) and Handle with care (7-12) albums with four more tracks (13-16 - these could be from the Karl Drewo album - anyone with more info on them?). A good buy if you don't have the individual CD reissues available on Collectables a while ago. 1. Long note blues (Here is Cecco Beppe) 2. Get out of town 3. Sonor 4. Speedy reeds 5. Old stuff 6. Om mani padme hum 7. Johnny one note 8. Night lady 9. I' m so scared of girls when they' re good looking 10. Sabbath message 11. Now hear my meanin' 12. A ball for Othello 13. My favourite things 14. Just give me time 15. Keep on keeping on 16. Wives and lovers
  17. New Horizons? 2-3-2-3-2-2-3 .....
  18. Happy Birthday, and live long and prosper!
  19. I had similar thoughts after listening to this - didn't listen to it that often, and sold it recently. I would have expected a somewhat more "peaceful" treatment of those tunes, if you know what I mean ...
  20. Carmen McRae's great album is probaly the most complete selection of Monk with lyrics: 1. Get It Straight (Remastered 2001) 3:57 2. Dear Ruby (Remastered 2001) 5:59 3. It's Over Now (Remastered 2001) 5:29 4. Monkery's The Blues (Remastered 2001) 4:55 5. You Know Who (Remastered 2001) 3:30 6. Little Butterfly (Remastered 2001) 5:14 7. Listen To Monk (Remastered 2001) 3:09 8. How I Wish... (Remastered 2001) 4:53 9. Man, That Was A Dream (Remastered 2001) 2:53 10. 'Round Midnight (Remastered 2001) 6:32 11. Still We Dream (Remastered 2001) 3:28 12. Suddenly (Remastered 2001) 3:47 13. Looking Back (Remastered 2001) 5:35 14. Suddenly (Studio Recording) 3:14 15. Get It Straight (Studio Recording) 3:27 16. 'Round Midnight (Alternative Version) 7:17 17. Listen To Monk (Alternative Take) 3:01 18. Man, That Was A Dream (Alternative Take) Some got new titles along with the lyrics - I'll add these later.
  21. This Steve Khan LP has a long Monk medley on one side - I think it was the first time ever a guitarist featured Monk at length, not just single tunes. Can't find a cover of the Novus CD reissue. Some of Sphere's albums probably fit the criteria, too?
