This painting hits the nail on the head, as far as Jacko's concerned!

That's the one Niko mentioned - it was issued on CD. It's a good one, there's a thread on the Bobby Broom disc where the Bernstein is dicussed as well. I like the Bernstein a lot more.

That Junior Mance CD is on the Jazz Lips label ... we don't know what kind of deal there might be behind the scenes. Fresh Sound distributes EMI, Verve, and RCA recordings, so there should be some business relations.

One retailer, when asked about these problems, said it was a simple question of costs for a legal inquiry against the profit from licenses after they win a trial. How much does it cost an American label to go to court in Europe about licensing fees of a CD selling less than 1000 copies? At least that was what he heard from label executives ...

Seems to be a carefully made record. The German distributor's promo text talks about the grand line-up of pros Werner assembled in the studio ....

Now that didn' take long ... but the expanded edition of Jazz Moments is not on the list.

Album Covers w/Sheet Music On A Stand, Be It...
mikeweil replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There's a stand, and you know the sheet is there, as he writes some, so this is okay? There should be quite a few Blue Note covers with photos taken at RVG's showing music stands ... -
That video of Thad Jones & Mel Lewis & the band is pretty great - I remember almost getting mad many years ago during a phone conversation with the leader of some local big band when he called Thad & Mel out of style or whatever ... his band was nice, I had been asked to write about them at the occasion of their umpteenth anniversary, but I have yet to hear a local big band playing on that level. Players like Snooky Young are indispensable and invaluable for music on such a level, they get overlooked by the public, raved about only by connoisseurs like those that write here, but what would music be without them? Hearing about the passing od such musicians makes me melancholy - R.I.P. and a million thanks for the music.

I have an old Teleton amp in the attic - it has a fader from stereo to mono, a unique feature I haven't seen on any other amp. I need to get a specialist to fix it ...

Check out this petition and hopefully sign it!

I signed - this probably is connected to the general structure of social security system in the US. There is a Künstersozialkasse (artists' social insurance) in Germany, with the state taking over the role of an employer paying 50% of your fees based on your net income as an artist. This ensured me a small, but nevertheless secure pension when I reach my 65th year. Probably all fellow musicians are members, as long they do not have a non-musical job for a basic income. Even now, that I accepted a non-musical job to support me I can stay a member and pay for my pension. That's something every state should have for freelance artists ... -
Thanks - I thought it would have been like that.

http://www.flickr.co...ith/2034761624/ A collaboration of Carter and a Surinamese/Dutch band - never heard any music like this before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jQvgWCWUiA

Looks interesting - any more info? While we're at it: Has anybody heard of these?

Am I correct to assume this petiiton is not limited to US cititzens? (Petitions in Germany can only be signed by German citizens, AFAIK.) -
Anyone here use Magic Jack or Skype????
mikeweil replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I use Skype to talk to my daughter who lives three hundred miles away - when I use a regular phone she's always typing something at her computer, but when we have a videochat I have her undistracted attention ... It was her idea to present me with a webcam and headset for this purpose on the occasion of my birthday earlierthis year. -
Geoffrey Keezer collaborated with Peruvian etc. musicians on one of his last CDs, Áurea: see here

... and he could play straightahead in a convincing personal style, too. I have a trio CD with John Clayton and Harvey mason that would be a nice blindfold test item. R.I.P.

Dave Brubeck
mikeweil replied to mikeweil's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Ilse Storb's book is OOP - used copies are rather expensive, so this will have to wait ... -
The Riversides are perfect examples of what Bags was up to when he was put into different contexts by somebody else - a lot of these were conceived by Keepnews, I'm sure. same goes for his Atlantic sides. I, too cherish the Savoy etc. sides with Lucky Thompson. I don't want to dis Bags, it's just that most of his working band albums don't show much variety, he wasn't much of a composer, and his solos, though really great, rely very much on embellishment of the changes. I can sing along with and memorize several of Lewis' solos, but never managed to do this with any of Jackson's, although I will recognize him instantly. There was a long debate about all this on the Blue Note Forum a long time ago - no need to repeat this. Without the challenge of arrangements conceived by others, I'm afraid we would have many rather similar Jackson LPs just like there are many similar Stitt LPs.
-
You're welcome - Brubeck's own notes in the booklet of the 4-CD box on Columbia are very helpful in that respect, even more than the Fred hall bio.
-
That was my first thought, too, but remember this was an audition for a recording, not for a live show, so precision and concentration was first priority.
-
That probably is a mistake in the Bruyninkx disco - there is no mention of Herman Wright ever playing with Brubeck in the biographies I have. Should be Eugene Wright all the way. IIRC Benjamin subbed when Wright was not available. There were two Bates brothers playing bass with Brubeck, btw - Norman and Bob.
-
My best wishes - good to see you are sticking to your priorities.
