  1. There is a live LP on Columbia of that band where Laws plays a long solo on Afro Blue on piccolo - unbelieveable stuff! Laws tried - well he still plays that way - to be expressive through his choice of tone and melody, not by changing the tone, like Steig on the other extreme end of the scale did. It's a reasonable choice if you go for a clean intonation. So far Herbie Mann hasn't been mentioned - if there was somebody popularizing the flute in jazz, it was him. There are quite a few nice jazz albums from all stages of his career.
  2. amazon.com has used copies starting at 20 $ ... If I would sell you mine it would be more expensive if you added shipping ...
  3. IIRC Silver himself was not satisfied with the results - the arrangements in particular. Cuscuna listened to them and considered a release but Silver opted against it and was handed the tapes. So there is almost no hope that we will ever hear them if he destroyed them. If they are still there after he passes, who knows? I have to admit I would have loved to hear his tunes with a larger horn section ...
  4. Indeed ...
  5. Please listen to the first track on this CD, Let's have a natural ball, and tell me what it reminds you of ...
  6. Volkher, only read about all this now. I'm glad to hear the treatment obviously has succeeded, but your positive attitude may have been the main ingredient. My best wishes, and keep your head up!
  7. The latest from the Turbanator: http://www.palmetto-records.com/album.php?album=163
  8. So sorry to read this ..... we've lost one of the greatest pianist around, so much musical wisdom and elegance ... I regret I didn't take any of his CDs on my vacation. Being able to listen to him would make it a bit easier.
  9. I used to spend every cent left over on CDs, but simply can't afford it anymore. I'm interested in several types of music, and there is too much out that's interesting. More than 6.000 CDs is enough listening fodder for some time to come ... A lot of the new jazz releases fail to really catch my attention, and I have to reserve my limited budget to music related to my book project.
  10. I hope this band will come to Germany some day ... Great to read you're having a good time with the band!
  11. That and Griffin's first Argo LP are some of the best tenor sax debut albums ever recorded, IMHO.
  12. I think he meant that the 10" date could have been added to the Hank Mobley and His All Stars CD pictured above. Exactly what I wanted to say. Of course I have the box, too .... every Hankerist should get it while it is still available.
  13. Really? Never saw that one, otherwise I would have grabbed a copy before I went for the Box. Yep, I still have a copy of that issue - picked up in Canada. Possibly Collectors Choice - will have to check. This wasn't one of the CCs according to the list I kept. I've seen it, it's rare, but I only saw it after I got the TOCJ. Which means I didn't buy it so can't confirm the date of issue. The cat. no. is CDP 7243 8 37668 2 6. I thought it might be a title that was issued in the late 80s as part of the glut then (unusually) not reissued as a CC, but the date of issue I find on the interweb is 1996, which is weird - how would we have missed it? IIRC I didn't buy it because I was kind of disappointed that they didn't include another session - the 10" debut Blue Note would fitted nicely, enough playing time left and identical rhythm sections. Would have been a nice combination. And I had a Japanese LP pressing of the date with Bags ... BTW I just saw I still have it - if anyone's interested, send me a pm with an offer. Yes grab the big box while it is still around - excellent music on a consistently good level all the way through.
  14. Five of the tracks were included on the numerous Tjader CD compilations Verve released over the years ... some on CalTjader - Talkin' Verve - Roots of Acid Jazz and some as bonus tracks to el sonido nuevo with Eddie Palmieri.
  15. Corea is also playing on Along Comes Cal - never reissued on CD, but vinyl copies are in circulation.
  16. A Complete Verve Studio Sessions would be an option - Cal recorded live for Verve only twice, and these could be taken care of as single CDs. There were 14 studio LPs - I think 8 CDs would be sufficient. But I don't think this will happen - neither Universal or Mosaic are interested enough. Bear Family would be a label I would ask ... Here's a list of the LPs: VerveV6-8419 Cal Tjader - InA Latin Bag VerveV6-8459 Cal Tjader - SaturdayNight, Sunday Night At The Blackhawk (live) VerveV6-8470 CalTjader Plays The Contemporary Music of Mexico and Brazil VerveV6-8472 Anita O'Day & Cal Tjader - TimeFor Two VerveV6-8507 Cal Tjader - SeveralShades Of Jade VerveV6-8531 Cal Tjader - SoñaLibré VerveV6-8575 Cal Tjader - BreezeFrom The East VerveV6-8585 Cal Tjader - WarmWave VerveV6-8614 Cal Tjader - SoulSauce VerveV6-8626 Cal Tjader - SoulBird: Whiffenpoof VerveV6-8637 Cal Tjader - SoulBurst VerveV6-8651 Cal Tjader & Eddie Palmieri - elsonido nuevo VerveV6-8671 Cal Tjader - AlongComes Cal (includes one live track - I have no idea if more was preserved) VerveV6-8730 Cal Tjader - HipVibrations VerveV6-8769 Cal Tjader - TheProphet The companion LP with Palmieri on Tico would be a nice bonus: Bamboleate. The only unreleased material I know of are some tracks from the Soul Sauce sessions and a few with Gary McFarland - but I doubt the latter still exist.
  17. If you are able to view satellite TV in Europe you can see these pretty often, broadcast by stations from Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco. As well as other Arabian music, classic and folklore, form these countries. I love this stuff, especiallly the more culturally mixed stuff from Morocco. Om Kalthoum is a performer on the level of Mahalia Jackson or any other great singer in the world - a book like Habib Hassaan Touma's The Music of the Arabs or Henry George Farmer's A History of Arabian Music will give you basic insight. Or take this for some insight on the singer:
  18. As the material in the Jamal set is from the Universal group, I reckon there will be a European edition - I will definitely go for it.
  19. Really? Never saw that one, otherwise I would have grabbed a copy before I went for the Box.
  20. Leo Parker, baritone sax, died at 36 in 1962 Geez, that list grows far too long ...
  21. Paul Chambers, bass, died at 34 in 1969 Scott La Faro, bass, died at 25 in 1961 Oscar Dennard, piano, died at 32 in 1960 Booker Ervin, tenor sax, died at 39 in 1970 Wade Legge, piano, died at 29 in 1963 Richie Powell, piano, died at 24 in 1956 ...and of course John Coltrane, sax, died at 40 in1967
  22. Only two of the albums included in the Mosaic were released in the US as single CDs:
  23. I had all of the Blue Moon VeeJay reissues and sold them after I got a copy of the Mosiac, which sounds a lot better on my system.
  24. Picked up mine today at the post office - at last I got them to attach invoice copies to spare me the ride across town to the customs. Well, the set is great - I can't imagine anyone to coax better sound out of these old recordings.
  25. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, und viel Erfolg beim Ausbau der besten Jazz-CD-Sammlung der Schweiz!
