  1. Do the Bob Thiele label now belong to SONY/BMG or were these just distribution deals? I have the Manne and O'Day LPs - nice stuff! Signature would deserve the Mosaic treatment.
  2. Is that so? I haven't listened to this one in quite some time ... and if so, I wouldn't care - I'm turning into a mono fan for these old sessions. RVG stereo wasn't the best.
  3. I bought that King Sunny Adé LP after sseing him on TV - he performed in German TV's famous "Rockplast" series - but was disappointed. The live performance was a blast, the LP a sterilized studio effort. I'm glad I was given a tape of the TV show many years later.
  4. IIRC my first African record was this: ... quickly followed by this (the double LP I have has a different cover):
  5. Please send me a link, no matter how little time I have, I want to listen!
  6. FWIW, here's the original Jackson's Ville cover someone asked for:.... compared to this one:
  7. This reissue has it all and in excellent sound, all stereo. Harden's discography can be found here.
  8. What would the session have been named? Kind of Right Kind of Nice Kind of Steamy Afterglowin with the Miles Davis Quintet I'm pretty sure you people can do better than this.. Kind of Sad(e)
  9. Such sad news. He was a very nice guy and so enthusiastic about the music he presented. I got to meet him when I played in his show with the Kurdish musicians about three years ago, and he already talked about retiring. Too bad he couldn't enjoy life a bit longer ...
  10. BTW - if you see the page as text file with the html code, proceed as follows: - go the Mosaic homepage, you will se a link to the March sale on the top right. - right click on this link, choose "save linked content" or whatever your browser says - save to any folder - open that folder, rename the file from ---.txt to ---.html - click to open - it should open in your browser Mosaic made a mistake by saving this as a txt file instead a html file, that's all.
  11. Why do they always put these sets on sale at times when I do not have the funds ...
  12. The touring agent is taking the risk, I will go see 'n' hear him!
  13. My first Andrew Hill was the hitherto unreleased stuff on the Blue Note twofer LP One For One (currently available in the Mosaic Select). I liked it from the first note. I'd even recomend the Select as a first as it covers the whole range from the accessible to the weird.
  14. Oh, Gerald Cleaver is the one guy in the band besides Pelt that I look forward to the most!
  15. Chances are Pelt's quintet is in town for a gig on Easter Monday - if the agent can sell enough tickets beforehand, he will take the risk - he's afraid too many regular visitors are out of town for vacation. We'll see ...
  16. Hi Al, please send me a download link. I have to admit my time for listening is limited these days, so I will not promise anything, but I would hate to miss any of these compilations, and yours will the special fun, I'm sure. My life has changed a bit - I quit the Kurdish band late in 2008 to organize our move and establish ourselves in the new home, which was an important process as I had to give up my parents' house, but this and the loss of one teaching commitment meant five grand less income last year. To compensate for this I considered taking a day job, and when a friend of mine asked me to sub for him last month I accepted, and after that they asked me to join the team - I jumped at the opportunity. So now I'm busy with this new job two to three days a week, the rest is spent teaching, rehearsing the new jazz band and accompanying a dance improvisation class, and researching and writing a book I want to have finished by autumn - this leaves so little time for listening to anything not associated with the book that I even consider taking a break from BFT activities, but as I said I would hate to miss a disc. I'll do my best to keep up with the proceedings but will rather be limited to watch from the sidelines, I'm afraid ... but I sure want to listen to Big Al's big birthday blind fold test ..... Thanks for your understanding ...
  17. I ordered a copy - I should save my money, and still haven't listened through all of the H.R.S. sessions, but since I don't have any Bix on CD .... Besides that, I don't need every take of Bix with all those orchestras.
  18. I must admit I am somewhat disappointed. Of course this is a very nice set for anybody not having any or not much Lucky Thompson, but I think I will skip this one. I have all of the tracks in some form ecxept for the two with Dizzy, of which session there are two more on which Lucky does not solo. Now a Lucky/Bags set (incl. the tracks on Atlantic), that would be cool ...
  19. Roy Haynes was on the Art Blakey drum ensemble session that was released only in the Connoisseur series as "Drums Around the Corner", and, more importantly, he was on Andrew Hill's "Black Fire"!
  20. Is the 45 version an edit or an alternate short take? Or a two-part affair with fades?
  21. ... and who, by the way, would walk away while his precious platters are played back? Seriously, I have some LPs with run-out grooves that are killing to the stylus. All you can do is mark them and stay alert. Thorens once designed a device that lifted the arm and stopped the drive at a certain adjusted distance from the center - but it wasn't popular because of the brutal sounding clack that abruptly ended the listening.
  22. Still waiting for my tax refund, as soon as it is here, I'll go for the new one ...
  23. I still recommend Gerhard Kubik's groundbreaking book "Africa and the Blues" - nobody seems to bother reading it. Amazon link
