  1. To me, he was the greatest of them all - RIP and a million thanks for those evocative images. ... this one in particular ...
  2. Wait 'til you hear her brother John Shankar ...
  3. From http://www.applerecords.com/ I repeat: This Remastered CD includes one Bonus Track: ‘Yesterday’ / previously unreleased version of The Beatles’ classic
  4. Same here - this will be interesting. I think I can squeeze in a bit of listening time on my MP3 player, please send me a DL link.
  5. I will be back on the trail next year for sure, but would like to receive any new BFT, I figured out a way to listen to the tracks during the frequent breaks I have while working my sidejob - please e-mail or pm me a link to the current BFT, and all to come, I think I can find the time now to comment on at least some of the music. And a big thanks for carrying the torch!
  6. First one that came to my mind was this: The Casualties of Jazz - Kind of Black Organ, acoustic bass, and drums, covers of Black Sabbath tunes - listen to the samples: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/tcoj While searching the web for the above, I came across these: http://7come11.org/ http://www.darediablo.com/
  7. Saw that trio live here in town a while ago, nice gig. The whole catalog looks to me like a live session counterpart to the Criss Cross Jazz label - many artits are on both ...
  8. I want him to cut a few more real jazz albums before he cuts out - best wishes!
  9. Truly shocking - was he ill or something like that? Too young ... RIP, Willem
  10. Just sent a few bucks - this is the place!
  11. Geez ..... well I suppose it had to happen. I, too, wish you three guys all of luck and success, and regret that you never toured here - I would have loved to sit in. Okay, so perhaps with the next band ... Hope to see you all three here at the forum once in a while.
  12. I had the Giardino Armonico recording and sold it - I found the recorded sound rather strange, like they had intended a multi-channel disc and messed up in the mixdown. You hear little of the continuo group, and mostly ripieno strings - pretty much out of balance. Sound-wise, I think this is the best around, and played excellently, too, even if the group is slightly smaller: This new recording by the Avison Ensemble might be fine, but I haven't heard it:
  13. So you get the original albums with only few bonus tracks? Superfluous, IMHO. They would have done better re-releasing the complete box, which gives one more music on the same number of CDs.
  14. Very sorry to hear this. Great life story - an Australian becomes one of the most important advocates of a Czech composer ... I don't know what I would do without his recordings of Janacek's Sinfonietta. His work with period instruments orchestras was great, too, and his Brahms with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra - I could go on and on. I will miss him ...
  15. Great musician, extending the Brazilian choro tradition into jazz. I have a lot of very nice music of his. R.I.P.
  16. Collecting all of the Metronome All Stars tracks recorded for various labels would be worthy task for Mosaic or the like ... I only know of a Japanese LP reissue. That track with Thad Jones is on my eternal wish list, too. Bruyninckx states there might be an alternate take. But that may have been destroyed by the fire in the Universal vaults ...
  17. I had that one - he sings just like you think he would, the way he looks ...

    Henry Red Allen

I was lucky to find a Japanese issue of that LP when a local bookshop closed down - such enthusiastic playing!
  19. Hi all, Jeff just asked me about BFT # 77 ... I must admit I had completely forgotten about this - I temporarily resigned from commenting as I was too busy trying to make ends meet, and this hasn't changed. I'm sorry but I am completely unprepared an cannot make it this time. To make this worse, I have trouble with my disc burners and sound card and no funds to get it fixed at the moment ... Is there someone to step in, please, or maybe you take a summer break, I apologize and hope you can understand. My fault, sorry again, best wishes Mike
  20. I cross my thumbs for the Spanish team - the way they played yesteerday, they deserve the championship! Before the game I thought this would be a though one - but that Spanish team is playing together for almost three years now, and the Germans only two months! Hope our boy group will be there in two years, and beat Uruguay.
  21. Happy Birthday, and may you always have a good pair of drumsticks when you need 'em!
  22. Thanks - any idea about the recording date or year (the Pacific Jazz LP with Ayers and Bazley was made in 1962), and the full names? Curtis Amy Roy Ayers Horace Tapscott J...... Gray (I know some guitarist John Gray) A..... Wright Tony Bazley M. Obligacion - now that's clearly a nom de disque
