I once met a British couple who had two little sons named Peter and Paul. They told me their friends always made the joke that whenever they had a third child and it was a daughter, they would have to call her Mary ... Not too much of a folk fan but their songs were played on the radio over here all the time, and they were quite listenable. R.I.P.

Again, my thoughts exactly! I would have bought these sets from Mosaic over the course of the next six or eight months, one by one, but now that the hunt is on due to that unbelieveable carelessness of a third party ... I had to watch some sets go oop due to lack of funds and was lucky to get them years later for a good price, but since then I always ordered from Mosaic in time or when they went to the running low category. But this was simply too fast for me, especially since I missed that e-mail as I was on vacation without an internet connection. No, I'm not one to blame. If Mosaics were all I collect, well .... but there are quite a few other styles of music I am interested in, and some of them for professional reasons.

well, if I would swim in money... My thoughts exactly.

My marketplace order for the Pacific Jazz Trios Select was cancelled this morning ... Seems I will get the Brookmeyer, though.
-
Perfect, Jack, thanks much! That's the kind of listing I was hoping for.

Since you couldn't keep this for yourself, I had to order the Pacific Trios and the Brookmeyer - you're ruining me, but I really wanted these. And I still want the H.R.S. box .... arghh!

Blakey's Soul Finger - help with musician lineup
mikeweil replied to romualdo's topic in Discography
I'm afraid you did - but IIRC there was a thread, perhaps about the latest Universal reissues, where this was discussed. -
Oh yes I have that one, too ... I'm not strict about the time frame, as long as it was recorded in California, before he left for Europe.
-
You're right! I forgot I have this one ...

I am looking for recordings of Ben Webster made during his stay in California in the late 1950's, besides the many sessions he did for Norman Granz on Verve. So far I found: Did he record with Helen Humes for Contemporary? Thanks, as always!

Are you ever suddenly bored by what used to be some of your favorite j
mikeweil replied to Bol's topic in Recommendations
Same here. I had an almost complete collection of all 1950's Hard Bop on Blue Note, and grew tired of it at some point and kept only the highlights. Some of the albums I sold now start sounding alright again, but the heyday of my taste for this style is gone forever. Just take a break and then go listen again. -
There are always bad news on this forum whenever I return from vacation .... ordered the Pearson and Amy sets from Mosaic. Too bad, I wanted the Brookmeyer, Richards and Slack sets eventually. I have all the Bennie Greens on Japanese LPs, so that's one I can do without, but the others.... I'd kick whoever messed this up in the right spots so it'd really hurt.

The saxist I play with - a great guy and player and teacher - knows Mobley, but I don't think he has one of his records. Simply too much music out there, the curriculum focusses on other players, and his personal models are other players with an edgier sound. On tenor, he favors Brecker for his sound, like most of his generation.

Same here ... ... both parts of your message, that is.

... given they were not disposed of at some point ...

BFT 67 - comments I can't guess anybody here - my knowledge of this era of jazz is not elaborate enough, although I enjoy listening to it, especially when it's music of such high quality and entertaining diversity like the selections on your BFT disc. Thanks very much for compiling! I will only comment if there is anything that caught my attention more than the others - I'm busy with preparations for two weeks of vacation in the "Saxonion Switzerland" near Dresden - we're off on Monday. # 1: Nice vocals! #2: Nice soprano and again good vocals. # 3: Washboard! I saved one from my grandma's household. Every percussionist should have one. It's interesting that the player here phrases rather straight, not in a ternary feel like later jazz eras. # 5: sounds like a recent recording - who is this? Well done. I like that singer - to me her voice and phrasing is rather sexy ... # 7: has very cute phrasing by the brass section in the end theme, and the rhythm sections swings mercilessly. # 8: ... another great swinging band - curious voicings in the reeds. So far I listened to the first 16 tracks - I like them all. Great entertaining stuff. :tup

This Youtube clip features the Herbie Mann Quintet with Steve Marcus, Sonny Sharrock, Miroslav Vitous, and Bruno Carr - that band exactly was my second jazz concert ever!

'Yellow Submarine' Resurfaces

Hope this vessel gets torpedoes before it takes off. There is only one Yellow Submarine. -
Her last CD, Confessions, received the 2005 Hans Koller Award. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mf9jM7biCGY has her with bassist Claude Tchamitchian and pianist Stephan Oliva, her musical partners in recent years.

Among the members of this forum, sure, but among jazz lovers in general? Even jazz saxists over here have only cursory knowledge of Mobley's recordings.

That session is too good to gather dust on the shelf!

amazon.com has samples. I was inspired to look into this because of the splendid work of Hyman and Lowe on this one (Keepnews mentions the Elliott date in his notes): ...but these trumpet duets are not as much to my liking, I think. Is that the same Don Elliott playing trumpet as well as mallets (e.g. with George Shearing)?
