I wonder how this one is, his second LP for Capitol. When I saw that Mighty Quinn reissued this one, I ordered a copy from them.

I think this is a bit too closely modelled after Creole Love Call ...

I ordered a copy - I'm on a Lou Rawls kick these days. Nice to see how well connected he was to the L.A. jazz scene.

This was reissued on CD with c/w the other Rawls LP Matthews arranged, Black and Blue.

No idea - but I heard Dexter Gordon pronounce it that way in his concerts.

My amazon marketplace order for the Brookmeyer Select was finally cancelled. At least my credit card wasn't charged. Being a marketplace seller myself, I know their policy: First the buyer's bank account or credit card is charged, then the seller is informed and has to confirm shipment - if a seller confirms delivery before he ships he can get into trouble. Seems that amazon in other countries is not as careful ...

IIRC at least one of the tracks in the Select was recorded at the occasion of one of the Rawls sessions reissued here. Fine, straightahead, bluesy stuff - Rawls' 3rd and 4th LPs, respectively, with the Groove Holmes trio as rhythm section on some tracks. This twofer CD might be a side-product of Cuscuna's research for the Matthews Select.

At the time A Real Mother was a hit, I played in a band whose guitarist said he almost had to vomit whenever he heard Johnny Guitar sing ... I liked it, and that groove with the Moog bass line was a killer. I will dig out the LP later. Yes he was commercial, but in a straight, unpretentious way - and he was natural born entertainer. I several respects, he was the Prince of his day. Fooling y'all with one of his jazzy piano tracks on my first BFT was of the more pleasureable moments in my life

I also remember Andrew Cyrille early in his career in Montego Joe's Calypso band, not to mention all those saxists passing through Olatunji's bands.

Davis played a lot of pop sessions, I have albums of Laura Nyro and the Rascals with him. He even toured with Nyro. Ron Carter played countless pop dates, too, like a Hirth Martinez album.

This set was offered at similar giveaway prices in Germany - I got me one although I have the big Riverside box, and find the sound to be very good, with a very natural soundstage.

Sad news. I didn't know he lived in Berlin, or I would have watched out for gigs in Germany. I first heard him on Sharrock's debut LP, and then on Dewey Redman's The ear of the Behearer - nice big sound.

Tampa #1? In my old Bruyninckx disco I can find only Tampa # 33 by Wiggins, with Joe Comfort and Bill Douglas, from 1956. If you dig Wig ... can't be that bad.

I can't remember the exact date or reason I bought that CD (with full credits), but since I love Diz, Duke, and Clare Fischer, it was a no-brainer. I knew the UMMG arrangement from Fischer's Thesaurus LP, so I wasn't surprised. I think Fischer did wisely to not try the slightest attempt to approach Duke's arrangement style but instead respectfully treated Duke's and Strayhorn's tunes with his own approach - I like it a lot because IMO it's one of the most original Ellington tributes ever made. Of course I'm biased since I love Fischer's woodwind writing.
