  1. Just found this: Double Trumpet Doings Featuring Don Elliott (Jazzland JLP 15; Fantasy OJCCD 1925-2) - I should have looked further before posting. Still: how is this? (I like the Hyman/Lowe team).
  2. Has this Riverside 10 incher ever been reissued on CD, or has anybody heard it and can tell how it is? Thanks ... RLP 2517 Don Elliott/Rusty Dedrick - Six Valves Rusty Dedrick (tp -1,3/5) Don Elliott (tp -1/3,5) Dick Hyman (p) Mundell Lowe (g) Eddie Safranski (b) Don Lamond (d) NYC, March 16 & 17, 1955 1. Dominick Seventh 2. When Your Lover Has Gone 3. Gargantuan Chant 4. It's Easy To Remember 5. Vampire Till Ready
  3. I will order one immediately ...
  4. Hearing his tremendous sound should make an impact on anyone's life ... If I could take only one sax CD, it probably would be Pres. I wonder if those live recordings JSngry raved avour are avaoleble somewhere?
  5. He had such a tremendous groove - why did he have to die so young?
  6. IIRC Mosaic early on seriously considered a box set with the four LPs from the Workout period with Wynton Kelly, but then Michael Cuscua reissued them all on individual Blue Note LPs/CDs.

If the cover from post # 1 is any indication, I might go for some lindy hoppin' ...
  8. Steve Coleman & Dave Holland Marty Ehrlich & Anthony Cox
  9. Any idea how many copies were pressed of a Blue Note 45?
  10. They sounded like decent needle drops ca. 1980. The LP they dubbed from obviously was in good condition.
  11. That's great - wish I could be there. I love French Horn, and Julius in particular. All jazz French Hornists are special.

  13. For France and Germany, ask http://www.arte.tv/de/70.html - they might give it a chance, but it would have to be subtitled in French and Germany, respectively. I'd volunteer to write the German subtitles for a decent fee ... I think most jazz fans are put off by his totally unprejudiced use of any music form, some sounds corny to the avant-garde guys, some sounds too pop to the straighahead fans ... many musicians are not able to cope with his rhythms. I dunno .... I can't help but think that one factor was that he was white ...
  14. Never heard much of his music outside of the JATP sessions, as I'm not a guitar nut. An influential player, for sure. R.I.P.

    Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  17. You will like this one as much as the Tjader CDs, Al - it includes the only session with Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo, and Armando Peraza in one band!
  18. I bought some artifical head recordings back then - problem was they only sounded really good on headphones. There were some great radio drama productions in that mode in Germany. I'm a fan of SACD, and I think it will stay around for a while, at least in the classical field. Many smaller companies release them, and there is a stable market for them in Japan. The point about SACD is not just the surround aspect, but the high resolution which yields best results with recordings in natural acoustics with minimal miking - the old Contemporary sessions or any jazz recorded with just two mikes sounds great in high resolution. Another advance would be the increased playing time of single layer stereo SACDS - BIS in Sweden released some single layer CDS with over 4 hours of music! Of course they can be played back only on SACD equipped players ... I'd go for Bird's complete Savoy studio sessions or Miles' complete Prestige Quintets with Trane in a minute! http://www.sa-cd.net
  19. What are you waiting for? This set contains some marvellous music - it actually was the reason I finally got me a credit card! I doubt the United Artists session will be reissued elsewhere - not even the Andorrans went for it ...
  20. I see your point. Shorter would have been a great candidate for leading the free or semi-free camp, with his sense of form (which is lacking, for my ears, in most so-called free playing) - the tension comes from the ever ongoing conflict with musical boundaries, so you better not give them up completely. As far as Corea is concerned, he was tinkling too much, for my taste - very occupied with his own stuff, and not as rhythmically communicative as e.g. Herbie. But that music wasn't meant to be perfect ...
  21. Al, please add me to the end of the list - I still got one or two in the can. In case you're too busy, I could take over again in October
  22. I had overlooked the latest offer from Oldies.com and ordered the Kenny Dorham vocal album from some amazon marketplace seller, and it was a cutout. No idea where he got it from, but it was still in shrinkwrap. BTW - that CD misses then opportunity of adding the instrumental track "Optional" from those sessions, which was issued on the "New Blue Horns" compilation - one of the instances where they didn't care to look at the discographical details before pulling the master tape. Nat Adderley's album with the Three Sounds is another case in point.
  23. Just looked and saw it was 7500 copies - most are limited to only 5000. That could be part of the reasons it is still available.
  24. Happy birthday, and may you be well all of your days!
