Sorry to hear this - my best wishes for a speedy recovery! Saw him live with Art Blakey many years ago and have a few albums he's on - excellent bassist!

Later, three Don Patterson trio LPs in a row: Soul Happening - German Saba pressing of the Prestige LP - sounds a little flatter than the US pressing of Satisfaction, which jumps right in your face! Right now, the Cadet LP Goin' Down Home, which also sounds terrific! It's a shame none of these ever was on CD! Especially since Don Patterson and Billy James really rock the house!!!

I think we might end up with two camps: Those who really care for the music and real good audio quality, and those who simply use music as a soundtrack to their lives - the latter is the majority, and for them MP3s or any other convenient storage medium will do - remember that the smaller size was an important factor in the marketing of cassettes and CDs. SACDs or DVDAs were a kind of audiophile upgrade of the CD, and will only stay for a specialized segment of the market. Go to http://www.sa-cd.net and take a look at the new releases in SACD format and you will get the idea. The only problem I see in a specialized audiophile CD market like we already have for LPs, is that only a tiny fraction of the wealth of excellent music we are talking about here (or of any other style) will be available.

AotM - January 2008: Jimmy Heath THE QUOTA and TRIPLE THREAT
mikeweil replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
The Thumper and The Quota finally hit my mailbox this morning - the latter turned out to be a pristine sounding Japanese copy! Both are great albums. Heath's writing is so great, he deserves a place among jazz' best arrangers, IMHO. If The Quota and Triple Threat fit on one CD, why didn't Fantasy release them as a twofer CD in the first place? It might have given that music wider exposure than two high-priced Limited Edition OJCs. As I noticed there are no covers pics, well, here we go, all of Jimmy Heath's Riverside albums, some of the best the label ever released: -
AotM - January 2008: Jimmy Heath THE QUOTA and TRIPLE THREAT

He places ads regularly in down beat that he's available for clinics, concerts etc. I have Triple Threat and like it very much, a copy of The Quota is on its way, as is The Thumper - I recently found the latter two on ebay for good prices. I started late on Heath, as I didn't like his solos phrases that much, but his spirit, the quality of his writing and his choice of musicians is of the finest. And for a dedicated Julius Watkins collector, those two are a must! -
He's the only drummer with whom I like that muffled sound - he used to cut blankets and put them into the toms ...

Sounds pretty good, that MP3 - will try the FLAC tomorrow.

I second that! The Booker Ervin session with Larry Young doesn't live up to the expectations one might have .... The Gumbo session was also reissued on a British BGP CD coupled with "Pony Poindexter Plays The Big Ones" (the vocal tracks on the CD above were recorded at that session) - a nice quartet session that was put down by critics at the time for its use of pop tunes, but Pony plays them nicely - nothing earthshattering, but a good spirited session.

not ashamed of self-promotion ...

Add Mr. Bassman - he asked how things are at the rehearsal today, you can send a copy for him along with mine, or I'll make one for him. We'll see each other on a weekly basis due to rehearsals and gigs starting next week.

Yeah, but still Joshua has somethin' that reaches and touches me, that I never found in Lovano, who really bores me after a while - I have the impression that when I have heard one Lovano solo I have heard them all ...

Irene Reid, Singer, Bandleader and Actress, Dies at 77
mikeweil replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Artists
Very sad news. I bought one of her CDs two years ago because she was one of very few singers to work with an organ combo - liked it a lot. -
That Classics CD is great - an important link from the swing to the bebop era in big band jazz. There is a first volume covering 1945-46 that's equally good.

I never trusted this type of construction .... Luckily, It never happened to me with CD shelves, but once when I used to live in a basement appartement, a large shelf in the kitchen part came down like this - a smelly mess of spices, oil, soy sauce, and vinegar on the floor, mixed with lots of broken glass!
-
Sounds promising.

I've bought it a few days before their concert appearance here - I find it's a sincere effort to expand on the tradition of sax-bass-drums trios, rather sophisticated, highly accomplished. I have to admit I haven't listened to it since. Well, what can you do in jazz these days ... Yes I liked it, definitely better than some other stuff that is looser but less consciously conceived.

Lots of Cal Tjader due to the discography research I'm involved in. Everything else changes all the time.

It's not - I always did, too.

Redbook CD vs hi-res format - is there a difference?
mikeweil replied to mmilovan's topic in Audio Talk
I'd say the reason is that the advantages of high resolution recording are the greatest in a natural room ambience - and classical recordings are still made that way, in the vast majority of cases, whereas in jazz multi-tracking with artificial reverb added and overdubbing has taken over. How many jazz groups can balance without amplification and/or a mixing board? -
Happy Birthday Nate, and many more to come!

Props for Walter Wanderley

Is there any album where he stretches out some? -
R.I.P. Such sad news - he was one of my favorite bass players. Besides the ones mentioned, he was on a very good Muse LP of pianist Mickey Tucker. Billy Hart was the drummer. He played the European festival circuit with mainstream trios, but I never had an opportunity to see him. What a pity!
