1-2-1-2-3-1-2-1-2-3-1-2-1-2-1-2-3 or the Indian way: da-ge-da-ge-na-da-ge-da-ge-na-da-ge-da-ge-da-ge-na 17, subdivided 5-5-7 or 2-3-2-3-2-2-3 p.s. That's the refrain - in the first melody it's 3-2-3-2-2-2-3 ....

Jazz musicians with long recording careers

Yes! Ah, very interesting. Do you know what it's like, Mike? MG I never heard the Mainstream LPs, only have the Mapleshade CD, which is a rather nostalgic modern bop mainstream item, with Pierre Sprey's typical studio sound, if you ever heard one of his CDs. I found it mentioned somewhere, perhaps in the liner notes, that it is the same player.

FWIW, the complete listing of Ernie Henry's recordings as a leader can be found at http://www.jazzdiscography.com/Leaders/HenryErnie-ldr.php

Bennie Maupin did The Jewel in the Lotus where's the old cover?

Manfred Eicher is a German jazz producer or so they say

Thank you! What does "excentic" mean? It means "excentric" .... I had a few LPs with holes slightly off center, and Rhodes was always the first instrument from which I noticed!

On to disk ZWEI ..... # 1: Another one I have had for decades - one of the many Atlantics I bought from the cutout bins in the mid-to-late 1970's ... Not my favourite tune of this saxist, whom I like so much - I wish there really had been a movie for this track so he would have made some big money out of it! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:fxfoxq9gldje # 2: A track from http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:jxfpxqegld6e - I'm glad I got the Mosaic box with this before it was too late! Great groove! # 3: Should be Chet Baker - the Riverside LP with Kenny Drew? Almost too pensive - but in small doses, just the right thing. # 4: "Mean To Me" - there's something about this trumpeter I don't like - his harmonic choices, his intonation and phrasing ... not to my taste. # 5: Very beautiful writing! This is for the wishlist! I love lush bossa nova stylings like this. # 6: Hmmm - whoever wrote this likes Debussy's dances for harp and orchestra. No idea, but would like to know! # 7: Bossa and alto and strings - I don't know Desmond's albums with strings .... # 8: Another things that doesn't say so much to me - West Coast players, nice tenor, but too pedestrain for my taste. # 9: Should be somewhere in there: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:gxfrxzl5ldde Most wouldn't expect a drummer to write such a beautiful tune ... an underrrated band, IMO. I bought all these immediately after they came out. (If I'm wrong, from one of the trumpeter's LPs?) # 10: One of Wes' tunes, or at least he made it famous, "Road Song", I think, but I like Wes' treatment a lot more, although the tempo here is interesting. They are good players, but solos are too busy and the bass sound is dreadful! They missed the point, somehow, for me. # 11: Ellingtonia! I have this, but not the time to check what exactly it is. # 12: No idea - nice, but not as outstanding as some other stuf in that style I have heard. # 13: They try very hard to groove - reminds me of J.B.'s stuff ... Fred Wesley ... jazz musicians would have played that groove differently. Doesn't really grab me. # 14: Sounds like some late 1970's Bobby Hutcherson - from the Knucklebean LP or around that time? Typical Rhodes sound. This was dubbed from a slightly excentic vinyl? I like this, nice pianist. # 15: No idea who this is, but again, why a fadeout track for a closer? Besides that, a very nice compilation. I think I will make a copy for the car next week. Yeah - keep swingin', Big Al!

So here are my comments to disk "EIN" , off the top of my head, without having peeked at the others' guesses. My time is limited, so I have to confine myself to short notes. But it's a verrry nice 'n' swinging' compilation! # 1: Knew that one right away. Nice combination of Ellington alumni and hard bop pioneers, and a spectacular debut LP for its time. Great choice! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:3pfrxq8hldae # 2: Hmmm .... Leo Parker on baritone? Iknow that trumpeter, but .... Tenor reminds me of Gene Ammons a bot, but I don't think it's him. I hear a Dameron overtone in the arrangement ... # 3: Sounds like the Rabbitt and a lot of Duke's men, if not the leader of the pack himself. Don't have the time to thoroughly search for this. # 4: From Dukish to Basie-ite? Is this buried somewhere in the Basie Clef Mosaic box? I still haven't listened through this to the end, I must admit ... # 5: No idea .... don't have that much music in that vein, not enough to seriuosly guess this. Good track, nonetheless. # 6: I share the birthday of this composer/arranger - no wonder I always felt a great affinity towards his music. Musicians who played his charts said he wrote beautiful melodies down to the last part, which can be heard clearly here. Beauty and power all in one. A great album! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:hzfpxqygldke # 7: Tenor sounds a lot like Benny Golson. I wouldn't be surprised if he wrote the tune as well, as I hear the Dameron influence Golson admitted. Nice, but I don't have this disc. Hmmm .... drummer plays Blakey licks without Blakey's typical sound, maybe I'm trapped here. # 8: I knew there would be a track from this disc on your BFT! All the stars in the world for this great arrangement and a special mention for the French horn soloist: All you can do on that horn is in there! I even like the trumpeter on this disc! Yeah! http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:0xfpxq9gldae # 9: Another one I have and recognized instantly: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:gcfpxqwgld0e I wish there'd be more of the clarinet on this album! The drummer is the greatest non-Brazilian bossa nova expert there is! # 10: That guitarist reminds me of Mark Whitfield, the bass player has digested his Ron Carter, for sure - is that Carter himself? I'm not sure. I like that guitar player, but I'm not a guitar man ... # 11: And one more I have: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:fxfoxqygldae or the next in the series. I like this series, it deserves the Mosaic treatment. The tunes are extremely catchy, I always sing along with these! # 12: No guess from me here - this has similarity to some Silver tunes. I probably know some of these, but no names leaping out in my mind. # 13: Smells a lot like some swing allstar affair - is this Hawkins? Next tenor sounds a bit like Paul Gonsalves ... I'm puzzled. # 14: Starts with a Shearing sound, but the tenor wipes that away immediately. Some 1980's Pablo date with Milt Jackson? I dunno. Drummer is dull compared with the one on # 9. # 15: Another groover I don't know. You wanted to test my knowledge of vibists? They sure swing hard! # 16: That dreaded bass pickup sound. Besides that, some nice neo-swing that doesn't catch my attention as much as the previous tracks. The fadeout is odd and anti-climatic for this fine disc! Al!!!! what did you do? Or did you want us to change discs fast in hope for continuation of the groove?

AotM - January 2008: Jimmy Heath THE QUOTA and TRIPLE THREAT
mikeweil replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
Got an e-mail yesterday from the GEMM seller that had offered "A Jazz Version of Kean" that it was no longer available ... The search goes on ... Got "On the Trail" yesterday - very nice album, good blowing date on which I enjoy Heath's soloing much more than usual - but the stereo mix is odd, with tenor, piano, and most of the drums on the extreme left, rest of the drums in the middle, and bass and guitar on the right - what did Ray Fowler think? I hate the piano scrambled together on one side like it is on many Riversides! -
I have that CD and I have the video with these pieces - I think they're both great! I have all of Roberts' discs under his name and a lot of his sideman appearances (except those with Wynton ) and I love his playing and think he's one of the best of his generation, with a very roots based but still highly original concept of jazz piano. I wondered what he was doing these days. I'd like to hear a new CD.

Thelonious Monk - New Sony Columbia CD reissues
mikeweil replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
Nothing among those Special Market Releases that hasn't been available before. Mosaic singles are the most likely candidate for serious reissues from the Columbia vaults. But what makes me skeptical re the Monk Big Band disc is that all of these are single discs, the complete Monk concert doesn't fit on one, and the original LP replication CD was a French reissue - something doesn't fit here. Let's wait 'n' see ... -
Happy Birthday Eloe Omoe
mikeweil replied to clifford_thornton's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
How are things going? Haven't heard from you in a long time! My best wishes for a prosperous year! -
I bought Extensions when it was released, and I love that cool sound Steve Coleman keeps while soloing over those wild rhythmic carpets laid down underneath - great stuff, and very challenging to play. They really mastered those grooves. "Cool fire" is an apt description for Coleman's approach here. I have the other one too - I only wish they would have chosen greater variety of tempos on it. I love these time signatures, but find them tiring when played at the same lively tempos all the time - they show off their virtuosity, but I miss some other feelings. On the Holland, there is a very nice calmer tune.

Motivated by a Tax, Irish Spurn Plastic Bags
mikeweil replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I don't have the impression that the fee on plastic bags changed the German's shopping habits - they must think that bringing your own cloth bag or else is a drag. In addition, many grocers, especially for foodstuffs, hand out their stuff in bags automatically, and many media stores give them away for free. Only around supermarkets I see more and more people having bags or crates in the trunk of their car. The Germans always complain about these things but never change their habits, it seems. They always yell at the oil companies when gasoline prices are raised, but will not drive slower or less to reduce their consumption. -
I'm not the seller. 7 CDs, among them the rare Verve CD of Sona Libre. http://cgi.ebay.de/CAL-TJADER-JAZZ-CD-COLL...1QQcmdZViewItem

How about a blues tune for the Organissimo trio with Randy on harmonica and vocals: "I tried to log in to the organissimo forums, but the server let me down!" .....
