Thelonious Monk - New Sony Columbia CD reissues
mikeweil replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
The original LP had most of the bass and drums solos edited out and only four tracks - the two CD reissues had the complete concert and all tracks restored to full length - anything else would suck! There once was a French CBS CD of the old LP - forgettable. Oliver Nelson was not the perfect choice for arranging Monk's compositions ... -
Off to the post count races!

Finally got me a copy from Zweitausendeins for € 59,99 - an unexpected tax refund made it possible. Now I'll have to dig my way through these excentric soundscapes ... -

I have Japanese reissue LPs of both, in pristine sound ..... (you get the idea?) -
Fuhgeddaboutit ..... and: if Keepnews continues at this pace, we will never get a comprehensive Riverside collection.

Could you explain, please? Which part is owned by who else?

AotM - January 2008: Jimmy Heath THE QUOTA and TRIPLE THREAT
mikeweil replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
Only at a much lower price than £26.85, I'd say! -
Is this a random choice? I've been to Burg Eltz several times - but it's a remote location - Napoleon's troups failed to find it, thus it survuved intact.

I only had a sample track on some Xanadu anthology, but these were my thoughts exactly! -
Managed to find a neatly priced copy of Duane Tatro's Jazz for Moderns a few weeks ago. Three Jimmy Heaths, too ...

Buried deep in some cave, guarded by Iron Mountain - I'm afraid Keepnews doesn't remember that session, although it certainly was a great idea in the first place. Or maybe the tapes are lost. I'm anxiously awaiting my LP copy ...

Unitl Turkey joins the EU, eh? I don't expect that to happen during the next ten years or more.

Always had one - no matter if it was demanded by the countries I travelled to. But now, with regular trips to Turkey, it's mandatory.

AFAIK, "Kean" was some broadway show. (Paul beat me to it!) I guess the liner notes will tell me more - after many years of search I finally located a copy of the LP. Cross your fingers it is graded correctly! -
Dem secret moderators will gradually edit the whole board ..... ... before we know this will be a different place .... if we don't watch out ....

Good to see you back in the game!

"Lost" implies it was known of and looked for - is this the case? Sure sounds like Wes - should be the band with his brothers. Or a very early Melvin Rhyne appearance on the organ tracks? One should ask him. This is my post # 11.111 - would be taken as a good omen by carnival freaks over here!

Can someone here with the O'Day Verve Mosaic do me a favor? There was an album with Cal Tjader recorded at three sessions. I have the single CD reissue and the discographical details from the Mosaic website, but in the cause of clearing all details in Tjader's discography, we noticed that: --- there are timbales played on half of the tracks, but not mentioned in the notes or sources mentioned above. That's Johnny Rae playing them, that's certain, and Wilfredo "Changuito" Vicente, who wasn't credited on the original LP issues, plays congas. Is there any mention of timbales in the session notes of the Mosaic booklet? --- The original liner notes say Tjader swapped roles with Johnny Rae on some tracks, returning to his first instrument, the drum set. Does the Mosaic mention that? Tjader is credited for also playing drums on the Verve CD reissue, without specifying tracks. The easiest would be if someone could scan the respective passages from the Mosaic booklet and e-mail them to me. Thanks a lot in advance - you'll be credited in the disco when it goes online later this year - the Tjader biography a friend of mine is working on should be finished at the end of this year as well, so your help will be greatly appreciated!

Jazz musicians' wit and humor. Examples?

I had the LP and sold it - a little over-produced, IMHO. Large background ensemble, strings on some tracks IIRC, and aimed at the same audience that bought Milton Nascimento's LPs of the day. Not comparable to his Bossa Nova Bachanal on Blue Note, which was an intimate affair, in comparison. For Rouse completists.

FS: Grado Blue P-Mount Cartridge
mikeweil replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Offering and Looking For...
That's a good price - I have this in my Thorens TD-160 turntable and it sounds better than several more expensive cartridges I have tried over the years. -
That was often the case with "rainbow" series LPs - I sold them all after the CDs were out as they sounded better in every case!

But the rarest Jimmy Heath appearance on Riverside is: This was never reissued, not even on LP, not even in Japan! -

I once had a Japanese LP copy of Swamp Seed - I was a big Herbie Hancock fan, still am, and bought it for him and the french horns in the first place, but I sold it later, even before the OJC CD came along, and never got around to buying the CD. In retrospect I find it the weekest of the bunch - the arrangements are not as brilliant as on the Really Big or Sextet albums, IMO, and the tunes not as strong - but maybe that's just me or my memory fools me. It seems Orrin Keepnews used Jimmy Heath quite often - there even is a tune written and arranged by Heath on a Riverside Mongo Santamaria album, Live At The Village Gate - "Mongo's Groove". Any other Riverside sessions he contributed arrangements to (*) or just played on? Already mentioned or in my collection - have to check later for details: Blue Mitchell - A Sure Thing* Mongo Santamaria Live At The Village Gate* Nat Adderley & the Big Sax Section - That's Right!* Blue Mitchell - Blue Soul Sam Jones - The Soul Society Sam Jones - The Chant Sam Jones - Down Home
