Download Uproar: Recording industry says illegal to transfer music
mikeweil replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous Music
It's a shame that most record buyers have so little knowledge about the cost and work involved to get a CD out, or don't seem to give a damn about it. I have talked to people at dance courses about that - with no effect. They even sold bootleg copies of the CDs they used for the courses at one of the dance schools. I was close to giving a hint to GEMA about it. Most people think only as far as their own purse. -
The third to die at the end of the year after Stockhausen and Genzmer. But I have to admit I'm not familiar with his work.

I dunno, but Tatum leaves me in awe, and often in speechless admiration of how easy it all sounds with him, whereas Peterson never baffles me but bores me after a while. Tatum's virtuosity is too much of a good thing, sometimes, Peterson's is bland in comparison - just my opinion, of course.
-
Same here - the singer in particular

If the CD replaced anything, it was the cassette tape - as easy to handle - especially in the car, but much better sound etc.

Well, it was my first jazz concert ever: The Oscar Peterson Trio with Sam Jones and Bobby Durham in Munich during a week's trip with my school class. Everybody was going to a classical concert except my best friend and myself - we talked our teacher, who also was giving us music lessons, to accept it as an event of cultural value. It was beyond my comprehension back then - I was 16 IIRC. But it was a nice introduction. I hardly listened to him after that. Too virtuosic for my taste, even the simpler styled classics like Night Train don't grab me like any Ahmad Jamal or Wynton Kelly album. He was appreciated in Germany because they went for virtuosos - to prove jazz musicians were as good as classical musicians. But any idiot can tell whether someone is technically good. Musically, I think he was overrated. A good pianist, of course, but not too original. He may have been at his best during his Verve years, accompanying a host of jazz greats.

Lester Young/Count Basie Mosaic Announced!
mikeweil replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Did you run with the Lester Young Story Columbia 2-LP sets of the late 70s? That was a priceless series! No I missed on these ..... -
R.I.P. ... but the first sound I think of when his name is mentioned is that of birds chirping, like those that start "Quiet Village".

Lester Young/Count Basie Mosaic Announced!

I've been waiting for a definitive edition like this!!! -
My thoughts exactly - I like his less virtuosic albums the best. A great loss of one of the best known jazz personalities over here. R.I.P.

What CD's Did You Get For Christmas, 2007?
mikeweil replied to AndrewHill's topic in Miscellaneous Music
One of the nice old gentlemen from a group of seniors I do a drum clinic with every first Tuesday in the month gave me a CD faeturing one of Germany's best swing drummers, Freddie Brocksieper - very nice stuff! Besides that I got the annual personal best of the year comp from a friend and a nice Xmas comp from an ebay seller along with the Don Patterson Holiday Soul LP i had bid on - that's a very nive one, BTW! -
Same here - the request comes from the page which is the source of the pic GoodSpeak posted above, which is not displayed when I open page 1 of this thread. Somehow I don't trust this ... the popup delivers username and password - I'm suspicious about that kind of thing. Do you others see the pic or can confirm that site www.diluted.ca is harmless?

Merry Christmas to you all - it was great being in your company this year and may it be for many years to come! ...and as an amendment to Christiern's collection:
-
Up - the answers are complete now.
-
I was tempted, but the free shipping applies to US orders only - $ 40 for Fedex shipping is a little steep ....
-
Lenny White ..... I like his CDs of the last ten years, but I like those tracks least where he sounds the most like RTF - I hate that bombastic stuff.
-
My thoughts exactly.
-
Don Patterson - Holiday Soul (mysteriously this was on my doorstep this evening - on a Sunday! Santa at work early ..... I'm afraid this replaced Vince Guaraldi's disc as my # 1 Xmas album .... and my wife likes it, too! A mono copy, but in surprisingly good condition. I have been looking for this for so many years - what a nice Xmas surprise. The ebay seller even enclosed a self-made Xmas compilation, very nice! Jim Alfredson, you have this? If not - I will CDR this soon ..... it has the cutest version of Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer I have ever heard:
-
Well - accompanying dance lessons has been my job for many years. But I prefer the so-called Modern Dance style, invented by José Limon, which allows dancers to be more personal in their expression.

I recently watched a TV performance of a rather new Violin Concerto by Günter Bialas - a beautiful, fascinating work, but the continuous vibrato of the soloist got on my verves.

I'm curious; what do you guitar players out there
mikeweil replied to Jazzmoose's topic in Musician's Forum
God never made a guitar, only human beings! -
He was the last living pre-war Hindemith disciple. Some that Hindemith taught after 1945 may still be alive, but they're not as important. Genzmer and Bialas (who is also in his 90's) taught an army of composers in Germany, all very individual and distinct.
