Sometimes I wonder if some reviewers say "better sound" when they hear less tape hiss - this is not necessarily the case with vintage recordings, but the easiest way to make a judgement. It's no bigdeal to steal an existsting mastering and de-hiss it so it sounds different. It may sound more "digitally remastered", but not better as far as room ambience and detail is concerned. I have the Savoys on LP and think they sound great - I bought cheap de-hissed CDs for my wife when she started taking alto sax lessons,which sound inferior but display less surface noise.

Hubert Laws recorded three Lps for Atlantic in the 1960's, partly with Chick, and several of his tunes. Don't have the time to post the details, please consult AMG.

I bought that collection on JSngry's recommendation and am very satisfied with it - sure enough for me. It may sound like travesty, but "In Time" from the "Fresh" LP is my all time favourite, probably for its sophisticated riff constructions .....

I don't know a single person that does not think the volume is way too high at all concerts. I wonder why the groups and/or sound people still crank it up so high it hurts ......

Last Night: Jack deJohnette / Foday Musa Suso / Jerome Harris I left with mixed feelings - sound was not optimal and way too loud, and I thought deJohnette's drumming was too busy and not "African" enough for the kora stylings ..... they got along very well personally, and Jerome Harris filled his role graciously, but Jack wailed over the Kora riffs in virtuosic fashion instead of really locking into the groove, which the Kora master carried all by himself.

Seems amazon can still deliver ..... but pricey!

R.I.P., and thanks for a long life of good roots based music. I always liked what I heard, and will never tire of listening to Swingmatism, which was why I included it in my first BFT. One of the last giants making his debut before 1940 that were still alive. Oh what a list of passings by the end of this year .....

John Klemmer - Nexus (RCA Novus) (partly sax-drums duo) Look for the double LP, as the CD omits several tracks. Don't hesitate, this is the most energetic blowing Klemmer did!

Is this still available on CD? - I remember a reissue. I alsways wondered about this, but never got around to buying it; I love Dylan Thomas' writing, both the original and Erich Fried's splendid German translation, and have a cassette of the radio production, but this one is still missing in my collection.

I always wondered why he wasn't mentioned more often when it came to list Ellington drummers - I think he was excellent! R.I.P.

Since Mosaic did the Ellington Cosmic Scene reissue, may we hope for a Mosaic "double" in this case?

One of his first important record dates was a Kenny Clarke LP on Savoy; the CD reissue was called Kenny Clarke meets the Detroit Jazzmen (Tommy Flanagan, Paul Chambers, Kenny Burell, and Adams) - still one of my favourites. But all mentioned here are great.

Oh no - he anchored countless brass sections. An unrecognized giant of his instrument. Most probably would only miss him if they were played those sessions with the tuba part edited out. R.I.P., and many thanks for the constantly good work. OTOH - the all star band in heaven really needed a good tubist ......

The Tyrolian grape cures use freshly pressed grape juice for good reason. There are numerous physicians saying the negative effects of the alcohol contained are a high price for the postive effects of some of the substances in the grapes. One French physician collaborated with a viticulturist for a brand of wine without alcohol (they call the brand vino zero), but the problem is that the alcohol acts as a solvent for most of the aromas that make wine so unique. I tried it - it's nice but so far cannot compete with the bouquet of a good bottle; but their non-alcoholic sparkling is indeed very nice and refreshing.

If you locate one, be prepared for ridiculously high prices!

C'mon, clear up your finances and gain the trust of your wife. Since I got that, she doesn't complain anymore. I ask her before bigger investment, and she never throws a veto.
