  1. Found this photo yesterday. Probably taken in 1986 in Hamburg. Long story....but a friend and I crashed at this couple's place after a long drive back from Poland. He was a mini-bottle collector. Every wall in the place had shelves lined with 'em -- all full, of course. I'd never heard of such a thing. Packing that stuff up for a move would have to be a royal pain.
  2. Hmmmmm......how interesting. "The Polish Foreign Ministry said it had learned that some Polish tourists had rented vehicles to travel to cities where demonstrations were taking place. "We consider this very irresponsible and urge them not to do that," ministry spokesman Marcin Bosacki said." http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/29/tourists-scrambling-to-leave-egypt-amid-protests/
  3. Some of those old Regnery titles were scary. ....and many weren't. Published in 2003....pre-WikiLeaks days, Joel Mowbray's 'Dangerous Diplomacy: How the State Department Threatens America's Security' sure was right on target. A clueless, out-of-control, intellectually confused, out-of-touch institution (demand that the cables be returned? Return digital cables? Um, well, okay then.) He pretty much called that! ....now, back to baseball.
  4. "At one of his first sessions, with the Port of Harlem Jazzmen, he was very nervous. The only way to get upstairs was to call from the sidewalk downstairs. One of the musicians said, “Billie Holiday is standing outside. She wants to come up.” Alfred said that he didn’t know what he was doing, and that he was so nervous that he wouldn’t let her up. He told me later how much he regretted that—she could have come up and sung something great, but he was just too nervous." Huh? Review his life journey and you're left with the impression that he was as aggressive as a Wolverine....a non shrinking violet of a fellow. This bit just sounds slightly off in a funny sorta way. Eh, no matter.
  5. If that were the case, it would then be easier to ship abroad because the domestic only lines would always be longer and it would be a cinch to ship overseas. Anyway, I think you're talking about the post offices here in Virginia where we have to stand in different lines based on the firearms we're shipping. Just fyi, I've had a terrible time over the years finding German sellers who'll ship here (thank goodness for the jazz network).....what's the deal with that?
  6. ....and she posted above.
  7. Yeah, it's totally stupid. For $10 less you can get Uranium Ore. http://www.amazon.com/Images-SI-Inc-Uranium-Ore/dp/B000796XXM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1295879041&sr=8-2

  9. The meters have blue film sheets. Are the lights found inside McIntosh gear: a) blue LED b) specially coated incandescent bulbs c) both
  10. Thank you, Larry. Hmmmm. Note to self: must text eldest daughter this afternoon and ask her why her teacher is still perusing my copy of 'Bessie' a full year after she brought it to school? Have her politely ask for it back and counsel her against going off the rails........for the time being, anyway.
  11. Last time I was up there, I picked up the Mulligan Concert Band set for $60. Not too shabby. What would/should that Shearing vinyl set fetch? $200?
  12. I had to laugh when I read this over at Hoffman: "They're obviously idiots over there at Rhino/Grateful Dead, that's obvious. They announce a box, we all bite, then they can't handle it. At $450 a pop. Ridiculous."
  13. Interesting article, Chris. Geez, Lin Halliday. Heard of him....but nothing by him.
  14. This guy flew into the back patio door and rattled his marbles. Stood still on the flagstones for almost 10 minutes before the fog lifted. Lucky for him that I was out there rather than the neighbor's cat.
  15. If they hadn't been alerted to the Williams error(s) and had gone ahead and printed/distributed booklets, would this then have been considered the worst historical inaccuracy to wind up in a Mosaic booklet? Have there been others? I dunno....can't think of anything off-hand.
  16. Just received the email for this. Says 'Morgran'. Looks like a nice set.
  17. Oh man, that is horrible. That poor family.
  18. I've been depressed for awhile and have barely listened to any jazz other than John Hicks 'Naima's Love Song' and the Dorham 'Jazz Contrasts' a couple of times. For some reason, reading this thread makes me want to get back in the saddle and place a few orders. You've got 10 on the way ......what are you recommending?
  19. That's a neat picture. No visible superstructure in the reflection so it looks as though the sign is floating in thin air. Or, um.....maybe my eyes are just screwed up? Is it a decal on the mirror? Yeah, maybe it is......looks like it says 'Chuck's Hotel'?
  20. Many of you know of Julie's long battle with cancer and I wanted to share this recent Senate floor statement given by her boss of 18 years. Through four rounds of chemo, then brain surgery for one tumor and about 16 CyberKnife treatments at Georgetown University Hospital on four other tumors, she took the hits and would pop back up like one of those inflatable kid's punching bags. Through it all, she never once ventured into 'why me? why me?' territory... and when asked 'why you, Julie?' by others, would always respond 'well, hey, why not me?' Her motto was always 'get over it....get up & get going'. She was so courageous and respected by the nurses and oncologists that they would often quietly pair her up -- in the office waiting room -- with some of the 'newer' cancer patients who appeared to be totally distraught and in shock mode so that she could counsel them and help them along. She was amazing in all respects -- never ever complained when I went totally nutso because of this board and started buying thousands of jazz cds.....and actually liked all the weird beer t-shirts I'd whip up. For 22 years, I was the luckiest guy on earth...... http://bond.senate.gov/public/index.cfm?FuseAction=PressRoom.Multimedia http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/washingtonpost/obituary.aspx?n=julie-a-dammann&pid=146654001
