Retta Christie with David Evans and Dave Frishberg, vol. 2
jazzkrow replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Frishberg lives here in Portland and when he is not playing in New York, he backs up both Rebecca Kilgore (on Arbors label) and lately enjoys playing with Retta, who has a great voice and a big following here in town. David Evans settled a few years ago in Portland and plays with many different folk. New Orleans transplant, Devin Phillips, saxophonist from New Orleans, came here soon after Katrina. Bassist David Friesen also makes his home here. Esperanza Spaulding went to high school here before she took off for New York and stardom. Quite an active scene here in Portland, but only one jazz club, Jimmy Maks, where the great drummer Mel Brown plays several days a week. Happily, Curtis Fuller, will be coming to town next month to play with Mel Brown's band -

I was able to get a spare copy of the 6 CD "Complete 1955-1957 Jackie McLean Quartet, Quintet, Sextet" box set. Looking to trade it for the new Lockjaw Davis/ Shirley Scott box set or open to other similar value box sets. Does not have to be a 6 CD set in return. Trade to US members only due to cost of international mail Thanks!

Newbury bargain thread (and bargains in general)
jazzkrow replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Don't be surprised if Best Buy cannot fill your order-I once had a pending order with them for 3+ mos before giving up I eventually got this set from Borders at a similar price. Being an optimist I just put in an order myself since at this price it makes a good gift. I'm just not counting on Best Buy to fulfill this order. This box set goes for well more than they are asking-and it is a great set Let's all cross our fingers-and toes... -
My all time favorite pianist. Finally got a chance to see him 2 times in the last five years. In person, as kind and as gracious man, as you'd ever find... RIP, Hank!

Checked out this set on Amazon.com Canada-for some reason even after I added another inexpensive item to get price over $40CD free shipping wasn't added. 40% Borders coupon expired last weekend. Any other sources?

I have several mint condition Mosaic LP box sets to trade. They have only been played once or twice and boxes and booklets are in superb condition. For Trade-LP sets: Hall, Johnson, DeParis, Dickenson set Albert Ammons/ Meade Lux Lewis set Complete Blue Note Tina Brooks Complete Blue Note Clifford Brown Complete Charles Mingus 1959 CBS set (I also have the Miles Davis Complete Jack Johnson Columbia CD set to throw into the mix) Wants: (I know some of these are odd requests...but they fill in my collection) Box and Booklet only for the Buck Clayton CD set CDs #5-7 of J.J. Johnson set and plastic CD holder Shorty Rogers CD set Bud Shank CD set Mel Lewis/ Thad Jones CD set Send me a PM to discuss trade possibilities... Thanks!

EAST COAST SOUNDS - Los Angeles Jazz Institute
jazzkrow replied to JamesAHarrod's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I've gone to several of these LAJI weekends. They are great and a nice way to meet the musicians who are very approachable. Plus you can also get away during the slow times and hit the Amoeba on Sunset Blvd and maybe out to Charlie O's to catch a late set. -
Jim is a great guy-and personal friend. The Jazz Trading Post was big many years ago and many of us picked up loved treasures-TOCJ, etc- from trading with posters/now friends from all over the world. Many Blue Note Board members participated. Hope Jim can find some DJs to share their knowledge and collections with Monterey area and internet jazz fans...

A Swiss movie production of "Ramblin Boy", an excellent movie about the career of Charlie Haden was shown this week at the Portland International Film Festival. The Swiss director was present for a Q and A after the movie. The movie was superb and covered Haden's entire career, from his childhood playing in his family's Country music band thru moving to the West Coast and playing briefly with Hampton Hawes and others, before hookong up with Ornette. The Ornette period was covered in detail. Following that- time with Carla Bley and the Liberation Music Orchestra, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Keith Jarrett, time with Pat Metheny, his duo recordings on French Verve and then Quartet West, with finishing his latest family project with his children. What was present throughout the movie was Haden's innate sense of timing, his unique set of ears to match partner's musical journeys, and his big fat sound that stands out among other bass players. His continual searching for new projects and his wide musical interests keep him in demand and intrigued. There is no plans at present time for a DVD release as the movie is making a tour of film festivals as well as jazz festivals-i.e.-next week in Belgium. The director dropped the fact that an ECM duo release of Haden with Keith Jarrett is due out in May. I highly recommend this movie if it plays in your area...

Thanks for posting the youtube links, Michael! What were your impressions of Jackie, Michael-at least what you feel comfortable sharing. I am not a big jazz vocal fan but Paris' singing really knocked me out!
