Must be horrible to be so close to. Officialdom here saying we are two to three weeks behind you, London especially. We may be able to mitigate some of the word ramifications by being able to learn from Italy's experience. Stay safe porcy62 -
I like a bit of wild!

So now I'm looking at Masters Of Unorthodox Jazz 'Overground' from 2013 on Discogs
-
Now having listened to the one track I am definitely in for this. Not overly free CT, this one track reminds me of NYAQ (with a pianist and no bass...) on very quick acquaintance. Want to hear more

Thanks. I don't know what the rules are. A PM with the link maybe? Or just your description, I'm intrigued.

John Stevens Folkus - Life Of Riley [Affinity] Think this definitely qualifies as an overlooked gem of a record. Basil Kirchin - Everyday Madness [Trunk Records] a title for our times. Two tape pieces and a very nice Jazz suite. Recommended.

None of the musicians mean anything to me. What are we likely to hear? Any clues?

The Shabaka is really impressive, a definite development from the first which was pretty good itself.

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Great title for the Rory. I listened to him a lot back then, fondly remember a great televised concert, probably on 'Rock Goes To College'. Haven't listened to him in decades now -
Soundohm seem to thrive on bootleg stock

And me. Definitely on for the CD, less sure about the book.

Gearbox are releasing a Don Cherry Quartet recording from 1965 which could be interesting. I don't know if this is UK only.

The live experience is very different to the studio recordings many of which have overdubbed instruments. The live albums will give you a better idea. They are one of the very best improvising groups that I've seen and I've seen them a fair few times now. I'm due to see them again in June.

Free State of Jones Totally fascinating for someone who knew absolutely nothing about the subject. Well acted and dramatised without sacrificing historical nuance from what I can gather with some follow-up reading.
-
Yeah, I've been thinking of Out Loud but the shipping to UK and likely customs costs make it prohibitive
-
Listening now, great performance from all and in terrific sound quality. Lloyd shines. I hadn't enjoyed the previous Blue Notes as much as his ECM output but this is right up there.

If you do buy one or both do be prepared for the PayPal shenanigans mentioned in the other thread about them. It may be worth contacting HJ in advance and arranging to PayPal the funds directly rather than through their basket.

'Duo Exchange', absolutely. 'Live At Slugs' dependent on your threshold for bootleg quality live recordings - I tend to find these can add to the enjoyment and this is a case in point. But if you're bothered by distant pianos (except when soloing - it's almost as if someone's moving the mic closer!), overly prominent drummers and horns fading in and out then don't go near it. To me it sounds like a live recording ESP rejected on the grounds of SQ . The music's terrific in most parts, warts 'n' all. Nicely packaged. Listening now to the new Charles Lloyd live recording '8', the polar opposite in SQ, gorgeous quality and beautiful music What do you make of 'Legwork' Hutchfan? I've not heard it and didn't realise it was recorded at the same time until I read your blog, so now I'm tempted.

My LP set, not the full one, is waiting at the Post Office for me to collect tomorrow morning. I was lucky enough to see Lloyd in Ronnie Scott's last summer which was fantastic so very much looking forward to this release by effectively the same band. His continued activity is a balm in this troubled world

Breath easy and may your wife's post-op recovery be smooth. Also, remember to look after yourself. Best wishes to you both -
Mr Higgins is the man behind the BBE Japanese Jazz reissues. He knows his onions on this subject. I daren't read it...

What live music are you going to see tonight?
mjazzg replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
My favourite singer with one of my favourite piano trios. I hope it's as good as it should be. -
Rashied Ali Quintet - First Time Out, Live At Slugs 1967 [Survival Records] One of those 'lost' recordings where the recording quality might suggest it should have remained so if it wasn't for the energy of the playing involved. Valuable archeology. 'Wayfaring Stranger' is the one for me
