  1. Cicada Music is one of my Chicago favourites as are the Klang releases. That's the good thing about a fertile scene it will produce a range of music that appeals to different tastes I need to catch up with Mazzarella's recordings fine release(and liners), following in the footsteps of his other Delmarks. Delmark, now there's an important factor in this story, surely. I've many of their releases on the shelves
  2. Thanks Larry. That's very interesting and heartening to hear about the socio-economic climate providing at least an opportunity for artists to survive/work. I didn't realise Reed was so involved. He's a great drummer, writer, bandleader from the recorded evidence that's for sure.
  3. certainly sounds so. I don't know anything about Sawano apart from what's on their website. are they generally well regarded? no mistaking for KW on that one
  4. I don't really see the relevance of folks' judgements on KV's musical abilities on this discussion which is about organisational influences on a scene (whenever KV's mentioned there seem a necessity for questioning of his musical abilities). It seems commonly accepted that as a facilitator he's added greatly and generously to the propagation of important strands currently being heard. If the Velvet Lounge was so important what has happened to sustain its influence since its closure? Is the cross-fertilisation across social/racial lines that Chuck mentions above still happening without a focus like the Velvet Lounge - from a very long way away it would seem to be. If so, is that a lasting legacy or are others (people and venues) now doing the work that Anderson and the VL did? apologies for all the questions.....
  5. which are?
  6. Does the North and South sides have distinct musical identities or is it purely geographical?
  7. Brooklyn is a great read as are most of Toibin's novels. He addresses some big themes often in a seemingly gentle way. Real craftsman of language Another contemporary Irish author who's a must-read for me is Sebastian Barry. About time for another novel from him
  8. I bought three of the recent Perelmans and the Lacy/Leandre. Feeling very virtuous only buying four this year but I do still have a couple unlistened to from last year's sale
  9. That Telegraph review is a disgrace, and would be laughable if not so obnoxiously snide, as it betrays so many prejudices in the reviewer's mind. I enjoyed the first episode mainly because of the pacing. I was a little unconvinced by Wishaw's acting, not the character, but his interpretation thereof What concerned me much more was the very obvious parallels with the "spy in the bag" case from a few year's ago. It has to be the inspiration but I worry that it's too soon to be making entertainment from such a tragic case. I can't begin to think what family and friends of the victim in that case must be living through again because of this drama
  10. I'm rather taken by track 5. the instrumentation reminds me of some of the younger Norwegian players like Dans Les Arbres but the musical style bears little resemblance. It sounds more American somehow. A complete stab in the dark makes me wonder whether Cooper Moore is involved?
  11. Michael Naura Quintet - European Jazz Sounds [Brunswick/Atelier Sawano]
  12. Ready, set, go.......this year's sale starting tomorrow according to mail out I received today. Not yet apparent on the website
  13. Damn! Kenny W, of course. I knew I knew the trumpeter well. I shall now do penance for mistaking Kenny Wheeler and Leo Smith between whom I must have over 40 albums on my shelves. I could find myself expelled from the boards's Modern/Avant fraternity for such a mistake Certainly time to dig out the SME again
  14. Thanks for this info. I have the Joos Japo, enjoy it too
  15. most of the Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe and Fourmenonly are eye wateringly costly these days I've never delved into Harth's catalogue
  16. Just picked up a copy of this in a sale. Awaiting delivery
  17. Michael Sell Contemporary Music Ensemble - Innovationen Fur 10 Instrumente [MISP] I like this one a lot. I'll be getting some more Sell that's for sure. Mind you I'll not be paying the obscure vinyl premium for the Free Jazz Group Wiesbaden (cue Clifford T, I suspect) thanks to the wonderful folks at No Business
  18. Oto's programming a wider selection of music
  19. That's a tour that a few years ago I'd've expected the Vortex to be listed. Laubrock's played there numerous times before but it seems to me they've dropped off from booking the more adventurous and international acts that they used to. This perceived change does seem to have coincided with Oto's rise.
  20. Richard Davis - Harvest [Muse] interesting focus on his arco playing throughout this and then Terje Rypdal - Descendre [ECM] I've never warmed much to Rypdal but this is excellent
  21. the main discussion has mostly been about Laubrock in response to Allen Lowe's comments up thread. Ibragon's been mentioned in passing in that discussion but there's now concurrent posts about Altschul's 3dom band and folks' views on Ibragon in that. All very confusing.....and I've been following since the beginning of the discussion (I think)
  22. Love that Hampel/Lee.....as I do most of their collaborations. Not yet heard a poor one playing now Dave Pike - It's Time For Dave Pike [Prestige, Mono] just picked up in a local shop (along with Terje Rypdal - Descendre and Richard Davis - Harvest. Contrasting selection to say the least)
  23. I'm listening to the first one again now. Like it more than I remember but I still find Ibragon's undeniable technique obscures feeling to my ears. His playing's like a masterclass demonstration, so much technique. The other two ooze feeling (and technique) - perhaps that's a reflection of their longevity
  24. 45 RPM single...just my luck!
