  1. CDJapan have a seemingly good and reasonably priced selection. I ordered three recently as I'm in the midst of the same process of discovery
  2. Thanks for this really intriguing selection. I'm going to use it as a primer to investigate some more Japanese jazz
  3. Loved it and drunk copious amounts since discovering it in Paris 20 years or so ago. You should find the blonde and, less so, the brun easily in Notts' supermarkets
  4. Great. There can never be too much Raining On The Moon music or David S. Ware for that matter
  5. What I'm confused about in this discussion is that it appears to have developed with very few examples/names of players of the type of playing that Allen Lowe criticized initially. As far as I read David Murray has been put forward as one example, and defended to a degree, Laubrock initially and subsequently (and equally defended/rebutted) but who else? Brotzmann, Howard, Wright, Sanders and Berne all seem acquitted of the charge. Evan P, Roscoe Mitchell and Braxton I think self-evidently don't play like that Let's hear who these players that fit the initial observation "why do contemporary free improvisers think that increasing speed and quicker, more frequent punctuations of altissimo squeal and other sonic manipulation involving increased volume indicate and/or mean a build up of ideas and tensions?" One player that comes to my mind is Ibragon but my experience of his playing is limited and recorded only
  6. Uschi Bruning & Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky - Das Neue Usel [FMP]
  7. I'm another who has always heard Laubrock as a patient constructor of solos who rarely feels the need to go full bore or play 'for effect'. Also, Uba Tuba has Tim Berne who also, as far as I can hear over many hours studio and live listening, doesn't play in the manner characterised by Mr Lowe's post.
  8. Karl Berger - From Now On [ESP] new arrival. Strong session from all concerned
  9. Heard them last night - astonishing! really incredible gig Wasn't it? Just the most amazing experience. Nothing had prepared me for the intensity of Mitchell's playing. That drone-like solo he blew on the soprano in the second set was otherworldly. The hometown rhythm section were on top form too
  10. I guess you'll have to ask them that
  11. Manfred Schoof - The Early Quintet [FMP]
  12. Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra - When The World Was One [Gondwana] Leo Smith - Human Rights [Kabell/Gramm]
  13. Interesting sounding new release from Laubrock here http://firehouse12records.com/album/ubatuba
  14. Hope to make it to Roscoe Mitchell, John Edwards, Mark Sanders at Oto tomorrow evening. It will be the first time I've seen Mitchell live.
  15. Steve, have you bought the new Lytton CD on Wooley's label? I'm tempted but would be interested to your impressions if you have it

  24. James Newton - Flute Music [Flute Music Productions] arrived today. Been after this for some time. Sounding good and minty
  25. I think it very much depends on what you're buying and to a lesser extent where you're buying. I started re-buying vinyl about 5 years ago predominantly to get the ECM titles that had never been CD released. Except for particular titles, often the the first ten or so releases, I could buy most for £10. However I got the bug and in no small part to the "what vinyl are spinning now" thread started buying FMP. Po Torch, Ogun, Incus and other improv/free jazz titles. Buying these I'm spending upwards of £20 on most NM titles and I will consider £40 and above for something I really want that's in good condition. However an 80s Stanley Cowell LP cost less than £10 inc postage from Italy recently Analysis of Discogs pricing history does suggest a steady price increase, not many sellers will list below the highest historical price (no surprise there). Ebay is always more costly (unless you're lucky with a no-one else bids listing = £9 for Gil Evans' Parabola felt lucky) and it never fails to amaze me why folk make higher bids that the current Discogs price for equivalent grade LPs, London shops are Discogs and Popsike savvy and prices reflect that fact Interestingly it would appear anecdotally from posts elsewhere on the board that the prices I'm paying are often higher than US boardees have paid for these titles. Wherever you are they do take up the room, I agree
