That's sad. In some way it seemd he'd just keep on going and playing. He'll leave a big hole in the UK Jazz world for sure I'll not forget the duo performance with Keith Tippett I witnessed at a Stan birthday celebration gig at the Barbican a few years back - mesmerising

Homefromtheforest might want to chime in on this, being the bigger JAPO/OM fan. I have "Kirikuki" (1976) and "Rautionaha" (1977) on JAPO vinyl. I really rate them equally. I'm told by credible folks that the album with Don Um Romao ("OM- with Dom Um Romao" 1977) is the best of the lot. I could swear that at one time I had this LP but if so, have no idea where it is. It was also released as an ECM album, as well as on JAPO. Hope this helps. . That helps, thanks

Where's the best place to start with Om, Leeway (or anyone else)? I've often flirted with the idea of buying one of the Japos . Leimbgruber's doing a show in London soon of duets with Roger Turner and Evan Parker. - I think I'll take the opportunity to make his musical acquaintance

Gary Bartz Ntu Troop - Home! [Milestone] this gets better every time i listen to it - Woody's playing's taking the chill off the day

My copy of that is fairly crackly (hard to tell if it's the pressing or just life in somewhere gross - the vinyl is probably VG++). Good record that I would like to get a clean copy of. Mine's fairly crackly even after a good clean up whilst the vinyl looks good. Seller had graded NM and i got a hefty discount so can live with it

Arve Henriksen - Places of Worship [Rune Grammofon] is this really a five star record? No, not in my oopinion. I have all Henriksen's leader recordings and I'd say this is not as good as the three other Rune Granmmofons but better than Cartography on ECM. It sounds to me as someone comfortable with their sound and choosing not to divert from it very much.

I've enjoyed all Reed's previous albums so looking foreard to hearing this somehow (intl shipping costs permitting) Edit: to add that having read more about it I've got my order in - sounds like an intriguing departure.

This afternoon's listening

It's from the same Hillcrest performances, but it's different material. The America material came out in the US on Inner City as Live at the Hillcrest Club 1958, credited to Coleman, but Bley put out other performances on his own Improvising Artists label as Coleman Classics 1. (There was never a volume 2.) I'm not even going to look, but I'll bet the one of the public-domain labels has a "Complete Hillcrest Club" CD. I also thought they were the same - oh well, there's another one for the ever lengthening 'wants list'. Just back from the first evening's performance. Astonishing music that really came alive in performance as compared to the discs - much as Mr Nessa notes above. It was a rare treat to see Anthony Davis and John Lindberg live in London. The local string quartet acquitted themselves admirably and drew warm commendations from Mr Smith at the end. There was a lot of music to absorb in a two hour set. Wadada Leo Smith's conducting and cueing almost seemed like live composition but the written parts that were being read throughout obviously contradicted this impression. His playing was pinpoint sharp and cut right to the heart. His 'speech' at the end brought humour and warmth to close the evening. A privilege to have been a witness to such a performance.
