Thanks for the tip, Bev. I've been flirting (musically you understand) with investigating Mr Wood since I heard him on the BBC Folk awards a week or so ago. His songwriting and it's subjest matter, the De Menezes shooting, stood out. Is there one particular album you'd recommend starting with?

All three are very good. There's an argument that says that they are progressively less 'angular' and that the rhythmic becomes less dominant over the melodic. - something I can hear but the 'development' or change does not remove them far from the overall, defining aesthetic. Maybe it's more that the contribution's of Stoa (reeds) become more prominent? Don't dismiss the many albums also available on Bartsch's own label, here http://www.nikbaertsch.com/shop/ the solo keyborad release, HISHIRYO, mentioned by Chicago Expat provide's a fascinating insight into Bartsch's playing. I've seen them live 3 times and the precision and clarity of this music is even more impressive in person - a very exciting band

Another fan here. Saw them late last year perform an evening of Anthony and the Johnsons and then Robert Wyatt songs. Marvellous. Also, the sisters' recent TV presenting debut (?) on a doc about English folk dance.

.....eagerly anticipating I read in the current Jazzwise that Coin Coin is slated for release on Constellation later this year. I've only read about the project and I'm excited enough by that prospect so for those of you lucky enough to have witnessed it live.... She's playing a duet with Seb Rochford here in London a week or so. I hope to make that one

Tim Berne's Fractured Fairy Tales in 1989. Like others I stuck with vinyl for a while and this was the first release I really "needed" but couldn't find on vinyl.

Not many clunkers in that list! i'm more partial to the rereleases, not the least of which are air and dameronia. some kind of testament to Moran's release that it appeared on every critic's list whilst only two others appeared on more than half.

Spotify user too. Certainly noticed the ECM 'withdrawals' and also some of the Intakts. But for a free service I'm not about to argue with them. There's still plenty to discover - recently found Aurora by Augusti Fernandez et al. I also use it for pre-purchase checks if possible and have had fun checking out non-jazz albums from various end-of-year polls - about the only way I keep in touch with dance/indie scenes these days. There was an interesting piece in the Guardian, i think, recently about Spotify's operating loss this year - can't remember the figure but it was whopping - conclusion seemd to be calling into question their viability for opertaing as is for much longer

I, too, thought of the earlier Quartet West. Zorn's Spillane is a defnite. I seem to remember that Bob Belden's Black Dahlia on Blue Note walked those lonely streets too. for a different and perhaps more modern take on 'noir' I'd say Cinematic Orchestra's Man with a Movie Camera (imaginary soundtrack to a definitely non-noir film) and also Dolores by Bohren und der club of Gore (yes, ridiculous name but interesting music, on Spotify I think). Both influenced by electronica but also, I feel, by jazz. Both providing a noirish, 'dark' atmosphere.
