  1. Use the search function! I'm almost certain he's mentioned here somewhere, as well as on the previous board. I think someone, possibly Bertrand or Mike Fitzgerald, said he died during the last 10-15 years or so.
  2. I certainly think many of Zappa's tunes may be performed in jazz contexts. And there have been attempts at that; Jean-Luc Ponty did and album of Zappa tunes rather early on, allthough that may be closer to fusion than to jazz, and I know of several different big band projects. Regarding the comments above that the tunes work because of the peculiar intrumentation Zappa often favored, there may be some point in that, but I think it's a problem that can be worked around by creative arranging. It is perhaps easier, though, to arrange the tunes for a big band than a combo. I have the Palermo album, and I agree that it sometimes misses the point. A Swedish big band did a similar project a year or two ago - different tunes than Palermo did, but with similar results. The orchestra featured a femal vocalist on several numbers, in my opinion not a good move. If one has decided to try to make adaptions of Zappa material for a smaller jazz group work, I think one mustn't try too hard to "jazz up" the tunes. Then it all ends up like the archetypal Beatles piano trio album we've all heard, but don't want to hear again...
  3. Happy birthday, Claude! Another year ahead of enjoying life and music!
  4. A friend of mine has become quite obsessed with having first pressings ONLY. He still enjoys music, though, but in the form of MP3s, because he is too lazy to get the LPs out; in that case he would have to stand up... He has some self-insight after all - I heard him joke the other day that from now on he would only accept original master tapes, rather than records.
  5. I was in the shop today, and it really appears to be a first edition; very close to mint condition too. I'm going to trade in some stuff for it on Friday...
  6. Perhaps not as much uniformly happy, as satisfying in a way, if you see what I mean. http://www.jupiter2.com/eo/eo_exclusive/ti...eview_evil.html
  7. Happy birthday, Brownie!!!
  8. Thanks, everybody!!! I'm overwhelmed and heartened by the mass of congratulations from you board members! The number of phone calls and letters I received didn't come close! We spent the day at home, the late afternoon at a restaurant and the night at the movies (watching a Swedish film, in case anyone's curious), and I thought it was a great day indeed.
  9. Thanks, Hans!! Now I'll return to counting my grey hairs...
  10. A Carl Perkins discography, found here, seems to indicate that the edited versions were released on the Japanese CD, too. However, there appears to be correct Japanese LPs around; at least the "lost" track 'This Is Always' appears on a few of them. Look at this mess:
  11. Thanks for the info, John and Brownie. Seems like a safe bet to go for the original LP after all. I'm just uncertain how to know if it's the edited or unedited release? It seems that there was one release with edited tracks before Larry Bunker was dubbed in. I suppose I could check the timing of the tracks and compare them with what AMG gives for the CD issue. Regarding the Japanese CD it does not include 'This Is Always', which allegedly appeared on the original LP. That suggests that it's taken from the same tapes as the US 1988 CD release. It is labelled as 'Jazz Guitar +1', apparently because it includes one bonus track, but it's nevertheless a bit misleading since it also lacks one track from the original album.
  12. For a non-native English speaking person, sometimes the nomenclature is a bit confusing. I'm not sure what any particular types of sleeves discussed here actually are (except for "rice paper" ). Could someone please explain in very simple words - if possible - what 'poly' and 'mylar' is?
  13. Whith an outspoken intention of being repetitious, I want to second all of the above...
  14. ...what I forgot to ask - this is the Discography Forum, right? - is if anyone is aware of that any tapes should have been found, or if the Japanese release is simply dubbed from an LP.
  15. If AMG is to be believed there's a quite a story following the initial release of this album: It appears to have been reissued recently in Japan, though, and - if the description is to be trusted - without the added drumming of Larry Bunker: http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/gako-oku/Hall.htm I spotted a NM copy of what I believe is the original issue in a shop today. It wasn't priced yet because the deal with the previous owner wasn't completed, and hence it was not for sale, but the dealer estimated that it would be somewhere around 33 Euro ($40). A fair price?
  16. Found the Wilen disc during today's lunch break!
  17. A sad story... sometimes it seems that you're better off with a car in as terrible condition as possible; the insurance companies are mostly going strictly by the list. There are plenty of reproduction parts available over here, even for newer cars than mine, so don't have to bother with the Mercedes dealers, where many parts have been discontined anyway. As if it wasn't enough, a week ago an old friend offered me to have his 1975 Mercedes 350 SE for free! He hasn't ben using it for a few years, and it needs some fixing, but it's more a matter of time and effort than money. Against better judgement I accepted his offer! As I have no garage to put it in - I even park my other car on the street - I've made an arrangement with the uncle of a friend, who coincidentally has a big farm with a suitable barn for winter storage of old cars outside the small town where the car was, to keep it until the summer when I can start to work on it. So I'm now the owner of no less than TWO old Mercedes. I strongly suspect that I'll have to let the 350 go before soon anyway; a V8 engine craving leaded high octane leaded doesn't appear to be what either my wallet or the environment needs. Hopefully I can at least make enough money from selling it for a few months worth of CD and LP purchases.
  18. And oh, yes, I've fixed the loose rubber on the front bumper now, too!
  19. Well, the Volvo is gone now... I sold it cheap to a young man of the age of 19, who I presume will try to keep it running for another year. If I've been less visible on this board for the last month, it's partly because I've spent a lot of time with the car I bought a couple of weeks ago... a 1985 Mercedes. Still a Volvo guy at heart, I always had a penchant for this model. So weekends and the occasional afternoon has been spent at spark plug, oil and filter changes, cleaning, polishing, waxing, fixing the upholstery, etc...
  20. Usually it's possible to work around this problem. Firstly, CDRs with a nominal capacity of 700 MB often have a few MBs to spare. Have you tried to burn a copy and see what happens? Should that not work, you could try to eliminate the two second intro to each track on the CD. Audio CDs usually have a default setting of a two second silent lead-in to each track. Eliminating those should save a few MBs, hopefully enough to get down to 700 MB. Be careful, though, to leave the two second lead-in before the very first track on the CDR! Otherwise a CD player might have problems tracking the CDR at all.
  21. Thanks to DrJ:s comments on the old board I gave 'Sonnic Boom' another chance, and found that it was a lot better than I first thought. And I certainly agree that Walton is playing better than on almost any other BN recording he appeared on. As for the 2nd session, I agree with Chuck completely...
  22. The decription of that 'Mode for Joe' test pressing contains the following line: Wouldn't it have been much more interesting if the music wasn't the same?
  23. I urge everyone who haven't yet checked out Mel Martin' site to do so. There is, among other interesting things, a recording of Leonard Feather's blindfold test with Charlie Parker!!!
  24. The most absurd choice of music I've heard in a mall was a few years ago when I was shopping at Leclerc in Bergerac, France: They were playing the Dave Grusin soundtrack for 'Three Days of the Condor', a 1975 thriller with Redford/Dunaway/von Sydow as the top cast.
  25. I have this recording on the infamous Italian 'Giants of Jazz' label. I think several of the tracks were faded out, and one or two even faded in! It says "Recorded live in San Fransisco, California, 1972" and has teh following titles: 1. All Blues (12:28) 2. Love for Sale (14:00) 3. Oleo (10:14) 4. Blue Bossa (10:17) 5. All the Things You Are (8:32) 6. Li'l Darlin' (5:34) 7. Dahlin's Delight (13:04)
