  2. The year and personnel are wrong. According to Chris Sheridan's Brilliant Corners bio-discography, these are from Newport, July 2, 1966. Monk, Rouse, Larry Gales, and Ben Riley. thanks, jeffcrom, for the quick answer! that´s why i love organissimo!!! keep boppin´ marcel
  3. yesterday i bought on a flew market the curcio/i giganti del jazz vol. 16 with the monk quartet, coltrane-dolphy quintet and the mingus quintet. it was since a long time on my wish-list. now i´m puzzling about the recording dates because as usually, there are no dates and places in the liner-notes. after a quick search in various discographies i´ve found out that the mingus (better git it (hit) in your soul) is from juan-les-pins, 13.july1960 and the coltrane (mr. p.c.) from birdland 09/10.february 1962 but i can´t find the date for the monk date. the tracks are "evidence" and "light blue" with monk, charlie rouse, john ore and frankie dunlop. on the record itself is written that it is from 1961. i can´t find a live concert from this time with this two titles in it. can anybody help me? thanks in advance keep boppin´ marcel
  4. gordon beck playing the harpsichord on the title "gut bucket" from the wonderful album "whole lotta tony" by tony crombie from 1961. i love this album. there is a tune called "brazilia" that sounds like the microscopic septet 25 years later!!!! keep boppin´ marcel
  5. The first Esquire Jazz Concert was in 1944 and featured the winners and runners-up of the very first Esquire Jazz Poll. The idea for the poll was born at a Duke Ellington concert in 1943. Seated in the audience was the Esquire editor, Arnold Gingrich, along with jazz critics Leonard Feather and Robert Goffin. By the time the concert was over, the Esquire Jazz Poll was born. The Esquire poll lasted for four years. The idea was to assemble a panel of jazz experts, including Feather and Goffin, to vote for the best jazz musicians of the time. There was, of course, controversy surrounding the poll with allegations of favoritism and reverse discrimination because there was a smaller percentage of white winners than in other jazz polls. Then there were allegations that the experts tended to vote for more traditional, dixieland style musicians than modern style musicians. Regardless of the controversy, there were still some stellar names include Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Woody Herman. After the polls were published, the winners and runners were featured in concerts benefiting the Navy League. Attendees of the concerts bought war bonds to get a seat. The 1944 concert was the first jazz concert at the Metropolitan Opera House. http://archive.org/details/1944EsquireAll-americanJazzConcert http://archive.org/details/Esquires1946All-americanJazzBandConcert keep boppin´ marcel
  6. i don´t know what afrs broadcasts you mean: "jubilee", "one night stand", "victory parade of spotlight bands", "mail call", "downbeat".....there are so many. most of them assembled programs. the story of "afrs" is an interesting one in the history of american music, jazz and entertainment. you will find a lot of information in the books about "v-discs" by richard sears and "jubilee" by lotz/neuert or here: http://music.colorado.edu/departments/amrc/gma/gma-reports/the-armed-forces-radio-service-afrs/ keep boppin´ marcel

  13. yes, not really new: it was more than a year ago that this happened! more importand is (i think) the ed burke archive with over 7.000 hours of live recordings. most of it airchecks from the big band era with unique recordings! some of it was released on the "jazz hour" label. i love the harry james live recordings from 1948 for example. keep boppin´ marcel

  17. fine singer! but: it was long believed that this 25 april 1939 session included lester young in the personnel. that is incorrect, but: is it ernie powell (as mentioned in the liner notes to the "masters of jazz" lester young vol. 1 series) or most likely kermit scott (as mentioned in the w. bruyninckx vocalists discography)? keep boppin´ marcel
