  1. more information about the birdland recordings is found in the book:"the music and life of theodore "fats" navarro, infatuation" by leif bo petersen and theo rehak (scarecrow, 2009). the audience tapes are made by bill hirsch, he was a government contractor and sound engineer who pioneered and specialized in early reel-to-reel tape devices....it is now thought that the boris rose birdland material from the first half of 1950 is the result of hirsch´s experiments with tape recordings on location. his friend rose dubbed them to disc for sale to collectors, finally selling a selection of the parker/navarro items on disc to an enthusiatic bruce lundevall, then at columbia, for commercial issue. (according to the wonderful navarro book, page 311/312. keep boppin´ marcel

  4. Most people have trouble recognizing the drummer-- including Diz! There's an interview with him and Max Roach on a double cd of them playing in Paris (IIRC) during which they're shown that clip and begin musing about who was the left-handed drummer. (I gotta admit I thought it was Max when I first saw it. Didn't notice the drummer was a lefty. ) here it is. keep boppin´ marcel

  10. dear manfred, just coming back from my holidays from lisboa. there is a jazz bar in the bairro alto, rua do diário de noticias, 85, called "páginas tantas" with live music on the 30. august. pedro madaleno trio. the famouse hot jazz club at praca da alegria is now closed. i don´t know the new adress in the moment. the (only)? other jazz cd shop i know (beside the two "fnac" shops, without a large jazz departement) is "trem azul" at Rua do Alecrim 21 A. here is the page: http://www.tremazul.com/ but they have holidays ´till 07. september. there is another second hand shop at rua das pretas called "carbono". metro station: avenida. they have all kind of styles. the jazz festival in cascais is over now. (i think). so not a "jazz city" with lot of shops like paris, london or copenhagen. my wife is from lisboa and mentioned that you can hear fado in the bairro alto but this is also touristic. she don´t mentioned other places. sorry, but nevertheless i love this city!!!!!! have a nice trip! keep boppin´ marcel

  18. nobody noticed that the photo in the article is a fake? it is composed from two different photos by alan scharf. in the original are seen musicaians from the cbc all-stars left behind dizzy and bird is standing in the back but with front to the photographer. here the room left behind dizzy is black and bird is insert from another alan scharf picture but -- mirror inverted!! why?? keep boppin´ marcel
  19. the other man is don manning, a jazz musician/fan from portland, oregon. he recorded this two telephone conversations with brownie during the roach-brown quintet´s engagement at the basin street club, new york city (beginning of may 1956). btw: the name don manning rings a bell to bird afficionados: he plays drums on some of the gene roland orchestra tracks ("the band that never was")from nola studios, april 3, 1950. keep boppin´ marcel

    Uptown

i think "uptown" does it again! "When Columbia Records released the Minneapolis' after hours recordings of Charlie Christian, the listener was warned, 'The technical quality of these selections is admittedly inferior to the commercial recordings.' Not anymore! New digital transfers from the original acetates restore the sound quality. Dating from 1939-40, Christian leaps into the room with his driving rhythm guitar and ultra-modern solos." no more informations. just ordered it! keep boppin´ marcel
  22. here is a rare photo with all the musicians around the same time pictured also in europe. unfortunately not better quality. keep boppin´ marcel
