My point was if you're going to bring up someone who has been mailing it in for over a decade....while Drew Gress hasn't. My choice for greatest American drummer would be Hamid Drake (the only person that can get Parker out of his coma mode), but he's not far behind. Then Chambers. I am on this bandwagon! Which once again brings up Chuck Nessa. Cuscuna only afterwards. Can anyone imagine Nessa with the resources that Cuscuna, or Keepnews had?

No, thank you. Just noticed for whatever bizarre reason they announce things for the next year. The current list is for 2014. Monk was still very much alive June 1981.

Word on Henry Threadgill Just look at when they died in relation to.... http://www.nea.gov/honors/jazz/jmCMS/master.php?id=2005_06&type=bio http://www.nea.gov/honors/jazz/jmCMS/master.php?id=1989_03&type=bio

I could say the same about William Parker. He's been meandering/mailing it in for over a decade now. The only time I can stand him anymore is when he's with The Drake. It's really like....Hamid is here....I have to really play now. I have been biting my lip for lack of a Roscoe Mitchell mention and am now startled to see my name mentioned. Dang! Without you....there would be no Roscoe Mitchell and many other musicians/recordings.

Just noticed Benny Goodman and Earl Hines are not included and they died after if first started. Monk isn't included and he died the same year it started.

I am sure they don't have to be over 60, Steve, or alive. The Marsalis family in total is on there. Quick check....Artie Shaw and Sarah Vaughan are on there. Not mentioned Roscoe Mitchell, or anyone from Art Ensemble of Chicago Marshall Allen Hamid Drake David S. Ware Chuck Nessa Joe Lovano John McLaughlin Pharoah Sanders Tim Berne Drew Gress

This thing is getting stranger. Now he's being investigated for a double homicide which happened last year.

They're also going to have to take a $7.4 million hit against their 2014 cap. There really really should be something in the next CBA that prevents that from happening in a situation like this. You would think the NFLPA would agree since it means less money for anyone else. P.S. If you believe the "rumors" it's going to be more than obstructing justice.

Brit media verus U.S. media -- a divide?

My take is I think those in the US are becoming more stenographers/stupider talking heads for whichever side with every passing year. Washington Post & The Times-Picayune might be the last real major newspaper (and even the later has had cutbacks) that still does the kind of reporting back in the OLD SCHOOL days. NYT is a shell of itself, and @ times embarrassing. Is there a war they have tried to do their best to get us involved in since Gulf II? Everything owned by the Tribune company has become a joke since Sam Zell. Don't get me started about News Corp newspapers. The British Invasion is hasn't really changed anything. In the end....it's the lowest common denominator. Seriously, anything that brings up Piers Morgan of all people...talk about lowest common denominator. He actually makes Larry King look like a reporter. -
Last I heard....this was going to happen in Switzerland. Road trip!
-
Exactly. Sorry I wasn't clearer. Beside his playing....you really have to marvel at it all. One of those I will road trip/fly to anything I can, Oh, okay - I thought you meant something like he was in decline In that sense like Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, and Roscoe Mitchell....each year they're performing less. Catch them when you can.

Has their been a more snakebit city than Cleveland when it comes to sports?

Their story is pretty depressing. They or their estate has been in constant legal battles with Warner since about 1975. The first lawsuit resulted in them each getting a measly $20,000 a year for life. The 9th Appeals Court just heard arguments for the most recent one Siegel's estate late last year. Whatever it rules I expect an appeal to the Supreme Court. -
Something that somewhat fits. Pops took us to London in 2005. We were walking with Pops and someone walks up to him and starts talking to him. Most of the time he wants to get away as soon as possible. We ended up having lunch with him and drove him back home. Even hung out at his house. No pictures, or anything that would let you know. All the while they were talking none of us had any idea who it was, or why Pops was even doing what he was doing. Both of them having a great time. Not a single thing discussed about music even and the only name used was Roger. He didn't look anything like what he used to even. Later we were told it was "Syd Barrett". He hated to be called "Syd" because it just reminded him of things he didn't want to be reminded of. He used to walk to London from Cambridge. From his house that was about 103 miles both ways.

It's because he's not performing that much anymore. His age and the way he plays.... @ the moment for this year. http://www.jazzfestivalwillisau.ch/uebersicht/programm/hauptbuehne/

At the very least he's going to be arrested and charged for obstruction of justice
-
If he's performing I will buy it, or go see him if within road trip distance.

the last remaining ny record stores
Blue Train replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There are a lot of great record stores still left....which is why I think he's limiting it to CD's and a certain time period.
