These stories seem to be based on/to accept without independent verification the claims of Spotify, Pandora as to how they do business, what their costs are, the amounts they pay in royalties, and how they apportion them. I'm not saying they're lying -- I don't know -- but why would one accept their version of the facts as sufficient? They're based on their publicly disclosed financial statements. And we know those can be trusted -- see recent behavior on Wall St. So, they're cooking the books to show they're losing money and hurt the value of the company....and the bottom line of those major investors, CEO, anyone else with shares? If a company is going to fix the books it's to make the stock value go up and make those doing it more money. No one fixes the books to get less money for themselves. P.S. I don't use either Pandora, or Spotify. I'm suggesting -- just suggesting, but again recent corporate behavior in general and the history of the music business in particular makes me suspicious -- that they have if not two actual sets of books a way of calculating/stating the bottom line that allows them to pay less in royalties that they otherwise might, and that savvy investors understand this and proceed accordingly. Given that royalty payments would seem to be the main cost of doing business for Spotify and the like (correct me if I'm wrong), cutting corners in this manner might be worth some risk. As for those in the firms who hold shares, I would assume that they are in it for long haul, and that once the royalties model that works for the firms is established/accepted, there will be time down the road for rewards to be reaped. The only way this has a chance of working is if the stock value goes up, which it's not. Just like with Amazon....investors are not happy of no profit. It took 8-years for Amazon to show it's first profit....and they actually had a reason. They had to buy/build warehouses and stock everything they were selling and have a large workforce to get it all shipped. Pandora/Spotify just needs a few places to store their servers, but it's close to impossible to make a profit paying 80% more than non-internet companies. Pandora is in it's 12th year of loses and Spotify in it's 7th. At some point they're going to have to show a profit, or everyone will just jump ship.

PROs don't pay mechanical. That would be Harry Fox....and by "electronic royalties" do you mean the internet? That would be Soundexchange. SESAC also only pays for a feature performance. That could be why you're not getting anything from SESAC.

Pandora, Spotify or any internet radio pay a much larger percentage of their revenue than anyone else. Pandora has 200 million users and still hasn't made a profit. http://articles.latimes.com/2012/jun/05/business/la-fi-tn-pandora-lobbying-royalties-20120605 http://seekingalpha.com/article/1400531-pandora-poised-for-profit http://blogs.reuters.com/mediafile/2013/05/10/music-royalties-and-pandoras-box/

Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! = 5 Flies Apparently it is a real restaurant, however. I'm not sure I'd want to use flies to help advertise a food service venue though. It is (or was?) a restaurant in Amsterdam, Netherlands. I was a dishwasher there in 1968. Kewl! I was a dishwasher too — my first real job as a music school dropout. fly.jpg But, getting back to Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! ... I finally picked up the new remaster. Incredible sound, and the music is wonderful. It's a Taylor record that even Taylor-haters could get into (I think). For Taylor fans, it's like being wrapped in velvet (with drink-of-choice in hand). I purchased my copy directly from importcds. According to Four Lives in the Bebop Business, Cecil was a dishwasher at one time. He was a dishwasher when Downbeat named him best new pianist of the year. He was also @ one time a cook and sold records.

The link it has to scorekeeping. I do it for games I go to, or see on tv. My grandfather taught me initially. Though I have moved onto using Reisner. So much easier and next to now backtracking. For anyone like me that likes to use a pencil, but add some color to their scorecard. I recommend the Uni-ball Jetstream 4&1 Color. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/12/sports/baseball/who-scores-games-by-hand-anymore.html?pagewanted=all Reisners for anyone interested. http://www.reisnerscorekeeping.com/

John Zorn at 60
Blue Train replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
It's like people think he just started wearing camouflage pants. It's his trademark form of dress. Read most any review of a performance, or interview and it will get mentioned. -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

Love his music, but saw him once and it was more than enough. Pops warned us on what to expect. He spent more time talking/swearing than playing. It was just as strange/fasnaticing to watch as seeing Charles Gayle in full clown suit and makeup. When he wasn't playing he was proselytizing

Asiana Plane Crash at San Francisco International
Blue Train replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It seems all the non-Americans on the plane are going to get screwed in terms of going to court. There is an international treaty that covers international flights that will force them to go to court to sue the airlines in Asia. Meaning if they do win (it's much harder to win in Asia) they will get a much smaller amount than the Americans who were on the flight. -
Pretty sure it's understood what I mean by "pass".

Amazed Jarrett didn't have a sniper ready to take him, or anyone else that far....

He is however a poseur. 100 more compositions. -
P.S. Has there ever been anyone who tried to reverse "pass" like Jarrett?
-
Jarrett hasn't been relevant for most of my life. It's all about the Benjamins for him When you get down to it....it's a covers band that has been mailing it in for half of my life. I get DeJohnette's FB posts. He makes more money in Jarretts's covers band. P.S. Buy "Sleeper" and get back to me about the covers band.

John Zorn at 60
Blue Train replied to Mark Stryker's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Just heard Zorn composed 10,000 in the time this thread has been going. They all sound the same, but who cares. It's John Zorn. He will put his name on everything....even those he doesn't perform on. Hey, he's a composer like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart (have to laugh when I hear the sycophants say this.)....but at least on those releases....the musicians names are mentioned on the cover. Just like when he turned 50.....I expect @ least 10,000 60th Birthday releases. He just composed another 300 in the time I took to post this. -
Huge gamble by the Nets, if no title next year or the year after, they could be a huge mess.Ballsy owner. Apparently, Andrei Kirilenko thinks they have the best chance to win. He signed a 2-year deal that will pay him about $6.8 million less if he only plays only one season for them, or $3.64 million less if he doesn't opt of the second season. He opted out of $10 million for what would have been his final season with the Wolves. P.S. The Nets were already looking @ a $70 million luxury tax next year before signing him.

Asiana Plane Crash at San Francisco International
Blue Train replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
One of the two teenage girls that died might have been run over by one of firetrucks responding to the crash. It allegedly was also the first time the pilot had attempted a landing at San Francisco.. Flown in and out of into that airport so many times. At any given time there are 6-7 thousand planes in the air globally. Hell, even if there were a plane crash every single day that would still be an amazing saety record in the grand scheme. It's the first time anyone has died as result of any 777 crash. That's 19-years and 1,113 planes and WTF? knows how many tens of thousands of flights and millions of miles flown. -
Top 10 American chain burgers
Blue Train replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You mean a gimmick menu. It's not a secret when it's mentioned in every blasted article about these chains. If you want to have some fun at In & Out ask for food wrappers & soda cups without the biblical messages. 1. You will be amazed how many people don't know about them, or if they do know....they don't know the full list of items. 2. -
