  2. Sidewinder has kindly Pmd me & asked me to choose the next Album of the week (Thanks very much) And after racking my brains for the last couple of days ( It was tougher to choose than i thought I wanted to choose four 'Spiritual Unity ' , 'Milesahead' which i've been playing loads recently , plus I noticed that there hasn't been an Ornette AOW or a Monk AOW ) , I've gone for this one Thelonius Monk - Brilliant Corners (click here to buy) I think its about time we discussed a Monk album & its the one i thought most people would have & enjoy. JIM R would you like to do the next one ???

  4. In about 30 mins from this posts time a recently recorded concert by Randy Weston will be broadcast by the BBC's excellant Jazz on 3 show http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/jazz/jon3/jon3.shtml & will be available to listen to for 7 days if you click on 'LISTEN TO THE MOST RECENT BROADCAST' 19 December 2003 Randy Weston recorded at the London Jazz Festival Randy Weston is a jazz colossus with musical talents that surpass his physical stature. At 6' 7" pianists don't come much bigger. Imbued with a sense of his African heritage from a young age Randy was destined to explore the roots of the music resounding around Brooklyn in the 1930s, the blues, calypso and jazz. He not only grew up in a musical family, but in a musical neighbourhood. Max Roach and Eubie Blake were neighbours and the young Randy would hang out at the home of Thelonious Monk absorbing the language of music. Perhaps best known for his much covered bop standard "High Fly" and "Little Niles", Weston's major contribution to jazz has been a celebration of the origins of the music which began with his first ever recordings and continues to this day, witness the recent album Spirit! The Power of Music. While that record documents a magical series of concerts reuniting Randy Weston with the Gnawa Master Musicians of Morocco, tonight's concert is a rare opportunity to hear him solo
  5. Merry Christmas http://www.7fire.com/flash/TurkeyShooter.swf
  6. I wouldnt pre judge the christmas tracks too easily - I heard them for the first time when the box was issued & was surprised how good they were.
  7. I haven't looked at any of this thread so far , but i just wanted to add my thoughts,I'm sure i'll just be repeating what others have said - so if you read on be prepared to shout 'Yes WE know' after every couple of lines . I'm only going to mention those i liked or that i have a clue what they might be... Disc 1 Track 1 - Dont know who it is but cant wait to find out who - great choice Tarck 3 - Really liked the alto playing . Track 5 - is http://www.funky-stuff.com/ (hey i bet nobody got that one ) I like anything by him , but i've never heard him sin g a tune quite like this one - its all good tough. Track 7 . I know the tune i'm sure its originally by http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=B51ug6j7771u0 but i cant put my finger on which one it is . I really like this version & the way it builds up yo the main theme . Is it by http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=B5usyxdgbjolk ? (a guess) Track 12 . FANTASTIC . the only music i've ever heard like this before is by http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Delta/8835/art.html or maybe http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll but it definately sounds like the 1st one. Disc 2 Track 1 - I'm clueless as to who it is - but is that Nature Boy being quoted occaisonaly ?? Track 3 - HEY ONE I KNOW WHO IT IS & ITS NOT JAZZ - what does that tell you . Its http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=Asq6atro9klkx Its track 3 - my favourite track from one of my favourite albums - top quality. If you dont know the story of this LP its worth looking it up (then do yourself a favour & buy it!). Track 8 - I know the tune is http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...509&sql=H325141 but i dont know who this version is by - but i like it alot. Thanks for the discs JIM - I've really enjoyed them
  8. I could be way off but Ii looked at the PLosin milesahead site & did a session search & found this 1 at 9min 21 http://www.plosin.com/milesAhead/sessions.asp?s=630727 I did a search for with Hank Mobley playing Milestones & got this reply Miles Ahead: Query Results Sorry, the Miles Ahead database contains no instances of Hank Mobley performing 'Milestones'.

  11. they're not the only ones who have stopped posting lately - what about Bev?
  12. I've just won (& received ) Joe Henderson - Milestone years box set from Ebay, except from his work with Blue Note I havent heard any Joe Henderson before . I seem to have a mountain of discs to get through at the moment ( I still havent given the majority of the Paul Chambers & John Patten Mosaics a close listen & the 2 new ones are here) so are there any gems on the Henderson box ? I seem to remember there are few of his fans on the board I'd love to hear their views.
  13. Thanks for posting that Claude - I'll have to scrub it from my Xmas list.
  14. Ive only played disc 1 of the Pearson - its top quality.
  15. Mine are here - thats not bad going if they were dispatched on the 28th November , delivery to the UK on the 1st December.

  20. Oh so all this is supposed to be FUNNY !!!!!!!!!!! But out in front of the Jazzmobile, attired in Top Hat, White Gloves, White Spats, made up in BLACK FACE, HIGH STEPPING AND EATING A WATERMELON were CHRISTIERN & STAPLETON...........yelling to the spectators "HERE COME DE JAZZMOBILE" YOU, P.D., ARE ONE STUPID MOTHERFUCKER the humour must have got lost mid atlantic somewhere . How long has the guy been posting here 3 days??? & we are getting I suggest that the PULERS (look it up, Stapes) absquatulate and drive a herd of PULERS to DODGE CITY (aka ALLABOUTGIZZ). Nice portrait of what Allaboutgizz (you're flagship) is heading for with prudes like you at THE HELM!! Take my advise...either IGNORE or ABANDON SITE All thats seems to be happening is one board having turmoil & its immediately spilt over here once hes been banned. And it pains me to say it of my fellow board members but i think if he wasnt a respected musician with lots of musician friends / colleagues i dont think it would be tolerated , & I'm surprised there only seems to be three or four people suggesting that hes out of order. But hey its not MY board so its not up to me. Yes i will be using the IGNORE button when it comes in - do i resent that i have to after all this time ? YES. will the whole issue be resolved in the same way as All About Jazz ? i think it will. Am i playing into a trolls hands ? probably. Pheew - just needed to get that off my chest - sorry if i offended any of the regular members. Now where did i put those chill pills.
