  1. That is definitely true and something I am not happy about at all. I think that also falls under Noj's comment about letting each poster stand for his own posts. Somebody like BN82 shows up, proclaiming he knows more than anyone else here, with far less experience than most, and he's gonna be called on it. Bill's situation is a bit different, in that the conversation has been about an article he wrote, and that conversation has been going on long before he actually showed up on the board (yesterday) to sort of defend it. But he's also defending his words, which I think are calling us misogynistic as a whole, and I don't believe that to be true. Other relatively new posters have joined in (or returned to the board), and seemingly fit in well. How you approach an established group (whether in person or on the net) goes a long way in determining how well you will fit into that group.
  2. Nice lineup! I'd also be interested in seeing the Bennink, Berne, and Previte shows. Any relationship to Dave Stapleton?
  3. I think the implication that many may be drawing is that you seem to be saying we are misogynistic. As usual, Noj seems to be a voice of reason, and I agree with all of his points above.
  4. I don't think you've been around this community long enough to draw conclusions like you seem to be doing. If you are involved in data analysis as CEO of Email Data Source, Inc., I would hope you would want more than one person's anectodal comment as proof of a position which you seem to have pre-decided anyway. That hardly seems consistent with data analysis. Aric's comments certainly do not represent mine, nor (I suspect) the majority of posters on this board.
  5. If you are judging all of us by the comments of one poster (Aric), you are mistaken. He does not represent the typical board member here, nor at the old BNBB.
  6. I'm going to quote my own post to respond to your question. So from my view, no the music was not the issue - it was that it was released on the BN label. And using the term "outrage" is going a bit overboard, IMO. There was disagreement about whether Jones belonged on BN, but as Ray said, it wasn't unanimous, and it wasn't an "outrage". Just a disagreement that the label was getting too far away from classic/contemporary jazz. IMO.
  7. You must have placed your order before Ron did then.
  8. Last time I checked none of those people were recording for Blue Note. As Dan stated, none of those were BN artists when those works came out. If we had all been denizens of the Verve board (which didn't last long) or something, perhaps we'd have voiced objections when Hancock started doing the pop collaborations. I think alot of us have voiced objections about the pop collaborations for that matter. However, all three of your examples were all originally jazz artists (Hancock, Benson, & Montgomery), which is completely unlike Norah Jones when she had her debut recording released on BN. I still don't mind her music, but didn't feel at the time that it suited the BN label. Manhattan or one of the other affiliated labels maybe. Looking back now, it's easy to see that they got into the pop/R&B stuff after their success with Norah - Anita Baker, Amos Lee, The Birds and the Bees, etc.
  9. Looks like it's official that Favre is retiring this time.
  10. I think you'll get them. It's been taking BMG a bit longer than normal lately to get orders out, in my experience. Maybe due to the volume, with all the good sales that are going on. Sometimes they send things to you and they don't post them as being shipped, too.
  11. Any mention whether a new recording will be forthcoming with this music? Sounds great!
  12. Being in LA, the Dodgers always attract celebrities. And in 1986, they didn't come any bigger than Ed Begley, Jr. Unless you're Judge Reinhold. Or maybe Gary Coleman. "Bigger" and "Gary Coleman" in the same post?? Those go together like grannie panties and low cut jeans.

    Ralph Towner

The reissue has different (and less interesting, IMO) cover art - sans Marsalis. The original goes for pretty big bucks now, but is scarce.
  14. The Beck performance with the puppets was cool!
  15. When my 10 yr old has friends over, they invariably end up in front of the computer, watching music videos on youtube. That seems to have replaced MTV for the previous generation or two as a means of keeping up with current music - "So and So said Chris Brown has a cool video for his new song, let's go check it out". I think it's spread through word of mouth generally.
  16. Happy Birthday!
  17. Does Illinois also have a state income tax, or is the sales tax the primary source of revenue for the state? Texas has no state income tax, so we have a relatively high sales tax, to make up for it.
  18. Well, that's not entirely true. It depends on your point of view. BDP's intentions are good, there's no doubt about that, but one of the points about Rap is that it must ALSO be criticised for the ideas it puts over as well as the music/delivery. The record is pretty much a rehash of Martin Bernal's ideas he put out in "Black Athena", much of which is the sort of conspiracy theory that we have a thread for ridiculing. MG Rap is worthy of criticism, MG. But as with pop or other music that is geared toward younger people, there is both good and bad, to the extreme. The example I used is one that made me think, back in the late 80's when it came out. From that standpoint it succeeded. Tarring all of a certain style of music with one descriptor ("pure unadulterated shit") is simply wrong. The young man who wrote that is entitled to his opinion about the music, but he certainly makes too many declarative, authoritative comments, as if his opinion is the one truth, as opposed to merely his opinion.
  19. Once again you're purposely trying to offend. There's no way in hell you can say something like BDP's "You Must Learn" is "pure unadulterated shit". And if you can honestly say something like that is shit, then we will never see eye to eye on music. I want no part of your jazz snobbery.
  20. Saw this posted on another board, but it's worth repeating: SRV and Jeff Healey - Look at Little Sister

    Egberto Gismonti.

Ahh, it's nice to see board members bonding.
  22. Sad to hear, Jeff was far too young. Rest in Peace. Sad for his children to lose their father while they're so young as well.
  23. Happy Birthday Al! Thanks for all you bring to the board!
  24. Thanks for the list! Keith Jarrett was on in April 78? I can't imagine him on SNL. And does anybody recall what Miles Davis performed in '81? Or who was in the band for this performance? edit - looks like Miles performed "Jean Pierre", based on a little googling. Paul Simon & George Harrison, 11/20/76
  25. Tonight Wilco is on SNL. They just played "Hate it Here", which souned pretty good. Nels Cline had a brief solo, and seemed more interested in staying out of the camera. I'm liking the new Wilco album more and more lately. Any other recent musical performances you've enjoyed? Or some of the classics from way back?
