Is that the criteria for whether they should be listened to or not? If so, I bet you love Jane Monheit's music!

Clubhouse has already been on CD, prior to the RVG issue. I have it.

Shim is on Liberty Ellman's most recent release, Ophiuchus Butterfly, from 2006. I'm not sure what else he's involved in, though.

Had the Grammy show on this evening, while doing other things. Every time the Dixie Chicks won something they mentioned the album engineer Chris Testa! Way to go, Chris!! -
My grammy vote would have gone for either the Ornette or the Trio Beyond recordings. I like the Rollins as well, and wouldn't have a problem with him winning, from a personal standpoint. I haven't heard this Corea release, nor do I care to. But I can't imagine it being more worthy of an award than it's competition.

Every time I listen to that track (and "Say the Brother's Name"), I hear: Guitar Piano Bass Drams That makes a quartet, not a trio. The point of this release was primarily to be a duet recording. You didn't like it because it should have had more "trio" songs. Are you really saying you don't like the duet material, or you don't the fact that it's a duet recording? Hopefully you'll enjoy the next release.

Great end to the Spurs/Magic game last night too, with an incredible dunk off an inbounds pass with 0.8 seconds left in the game. Although I think the Spurs should have been given more than 0.2 seconds to work with after that play, I'm not sure they could have made a good shot either way.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

I'd love to hear a review of this when you get back! Happy to oblige! Wonderful show. Long tunes; I think they did six total, three per set. Kahil is unique. Lots of vocalizing, and his whole body goes into creating hypnotic grooves that never falter, even after 20 minutes. And some strange grooves, too. I couldn't really get a handle on a couple of them in terms of how he was dividing up the measure. But they'd sit right there in the pocket the whole time, and when he'd deviate, as during a solo, invariably he'd come right back into them, as if by magic, afaic. Told some nice stories about Lester, Malachi, and others who have passed on. He bemoaned the "fools" in power making such poor decisions for the common good. Also sends his best to Chuck; I mentioned your name, and he brought up a session he did for Nessa Records some 20 years ago. Fareed's one of my favorites, and although he was late getting there, and fighting a cold, he played some brilliant stuff. I really liked some of the grooves he laid down in this bass-less quartet. Corey (whom I saw with Roscoe Mitchell last September) and Ernest added some excellent work as well. Highly recommeded! And they have a new album out on Delmark. Thanks Joe. I need to put that album on my get-list. I'd like to hear Haque in this context, and I'd like to hear more of Wilkes, as well. -
Ghost started an informative thread about this soundtrack last year... edit - putting it in Haiku for Chewy: You find what you seek When you use the search function It's your friend, chewy

I picked up Umberto Eco's "Baudolino" on a sale rack at Barnes & Noble the other evening, though I haven't read any of his other works. The story looked interesting, and the timeframe it's set in (1200's, Byzantine Empire), struck my curiousity. Has anyone read this? Is it representative of Eco's other work?

You're probably right; however, the fact remains that that was her mother, and she's been robbed of ever knowing her one way or the other. She's the truly innocent victim in all of this. Anna's life in bullets: * "Normal" girl from small Texas town * Playboy Playmate/Playmate of the Year * Marries ancient billionaire, who dies shortly thereafter * Never-ending litigation for a piece of the pie * Wild-child lifestyle, and a "reality" tv series for a while * Son overdoses and dies while visiting her in Carribean after her daughter was born * 6 months later she's dead, under unusual circumstances * Three different men now claim to be the father of her infant child (perhaps wanting to stake a claim towards the ancient billionaire's money) - edit: and one of them being a Prince who's married to Zsa Zsa Gabor Could that be scripted any more strangely?

Without question, THE worst song of all time. Of.All.Time. "We just wanna dance here..." Cheers, Shane Right you are!

FYI - Early orders of Blackfield II from SW's website have an insert in them that indicates in addition to the remastered Lightbulb Sun later this year, they'll be releasing remastered versions of Moonloop and Recordings as well. Both apparently will include bonus tracks, too. I'm interested in seeing what is included with Moonloop, since it was just reissued last year (originally w/o the band's approval, but SW ultimately got on board and remastered it for Delirium, their early label that had the rights to it at the time). And the Recordings reissue is great news for anyone who likes the Signify/Stupid Dream/Lightbulb Sun material. It was a limited issue originally, and has been going for pretty big bucks over the past few years. I bought it in Germany when it was originally issued, but if it includes bonus material, I'm sure I'll end up getting the new one as well.

Ah the memories Here is an old haiku thread Have fun reading them.

FWIW, the original artwork was b/w printed on a cream colored, textured stock. No type on the front. The type you see above was from the back of the "gatefold" cover. The current reissue is a better repro of the original intentions. The original was lovely but probably anti-sales. Here is the '02 cd reissue, as Chuck is describing (with the somewhat wavy text inside the spine, or whatever you call that spot):

My initial gut reaction was that it was a suicide based on depression following her son's death. But if this scenario proves true, that's even more sad.
-
I bet that will get tied up in further litigation, as the child's "inheritance". This story probably will go on for another 20 yrs. RIP Anna, either way.

For anyone interested in ordering an autographed copy (by both SW and Aviv Geffen) of Blackfield II, it's available at Newbury Comics. This appears to be an exclusive edition of the album, limited to 1000 copies. Also, the album art for Porcupine Tree's "Fear of a Blank Planet" appears to be out: 1. Fear of a Blank Planet (7.28) 2. My Ashes (5.07) 3. Anesthetize (17.42) 4. Sentimental (5.26) 5. Way Out of Here (7.37) 6. Sleep Together (7.28)

If you're going to make the effort to go to Oslo, it's definitely worth staying on the train all the way to Bergen. Some of THE most beautiful country you will ever see in your life is the fjords between Oslo & Bergen.

You did well then, as it's still available at Eremite for quite a bit less than that. I've almost ordered it once or twice, but John's post finally pushed me over the edge... -

That Kansas/K-State game on Wednesday is shaping up to be a good game, can't wait to see that. I think Kansas is only going to get better, given the youth on the team. I would have loved to have been at the Kansas/A&M game, the silence in stands when A&M pulled it out was amazing!

I know it's early for March Madness yet, but since we don't have an NCAA hoops thread for this season, I figured it's time to start one. I just got done enjoying two great Texas A&M victories back to back in the last 48 hours. They beat #6 Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday night 69-66, after clawing their way back from a 11 point deficit late in the 2nd half. A&M guard Acie Law had a great game against Kansas' best player, Brandon Rush, sinking the go ahead 3 pointer with 20 something seconds left in the game. Then tonight they beat #22 Texas at home tonight 100-82, in a game that was alot closer than the final score made it look like. A&M had two starters foul out early, and Acie Law went out with an ankle injury for a bit, but they played their trademark defense and came through with a great win. Texas has a GREAT freshman in Kevin Durant, who could possibly be the first pick in the NBA draft after his freshman year in college. Limiting him to 28 points tonight seemed like an accomplishment. The guy can score from anywhere on the court. I'm still in shock that A&M has turned into a basketball force. Three years ago they went 0-16 in the Big 12, and that was the norm. Now they're ranked #6, and are 20-3 and in first place in the Big 12. They could easily get ranked higher after tonight's win. I think they're a legitimate Final 4 contender at this point.
