Dave Holland's Prism at Tri-C JazzFest (Cleveland)--June 28
Head Man replied to Milestones's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I saw this band at Ronnie Scott's last year and, like you, wasn't impressed. Most of the tunes they played were taken at the same tempo and Kevin Eubank's guitar solos were so similar that after a while the evening blurred into one, long jam. It felt more like listening to a rock band than a jazz unit. ...very disappointing. -
...that count as "weather"?

Art Blakey' Jazz Messengers with Thelonious Monk
Head Man replied to Head Man's topic in Discography
..so, do you think the Rhino sounds different/better? For one thing, the Rhino Blakey, like the Mingus Passions of a Man box, lacks the hot treble found on these new Japanese CDs. However, I might have given my opinion on the new Japanese discs a few times too many now, and I don't wish to spoil your fun. No, it's OK you won't spoil my fun...I'm interested. You see, this album would be one of my "Desert Island" picks and I'm keen to hear it at it's best. -

I don't hear that. Perhaps I'm just pleased to have it in a decent mix. BTW do you have the Rhino remaster to compare it with? -

Ah, so it wasn't my ears then...! Thanks very much for the detailed explanation, Mike. -
I've just received a CD of the latest Japanese re-issue of this album and see that it is in mono. As with the other Atlantic Japanese re-issues I've bought recently, the sound is terrific and surpasses all other versions I've heard. I've always had a problem with the way this particular album sounded; other versions I've heard have the instruments split into the left and right channels as though a mono recording had been re-mastered into a stereo version. Does anyone know whether it has ever been released on ether vinyl or CD in true stereo?

Well, since the set probably cost almost nothing to produce I guess they can just take a punt by putting it out there and hoping for the best. BTW it is one of a series of similar sets covering "Elvis Presley", "Country & Western Ladies", "Don Giovanni (!)" et al. I guess they are after people who wander around record shops and buy anything that looks like a bargain.

Charles Lloyd - Manhattan Stories (two 1965 concerts)
Head Man replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Having heard the recent vinyl release by Resonance of two tracks from "Live at Slugs" I must say I was rather underwhelmed, both with music and the sound....perhaps you had to be there. -
Just finished this. Three short stories including a very touching one about how it feels to lose someone you love. In his case, it was his wife of thirty years, who died in 2008. It resonated with me because, I too, lost my wife in 2008, after forty years of marriage.

I was listening to the original two vinyl record set last week..... As much as I think I need of that - I partly feel it's one of those where sorting out the murkiness would only serve to clarify the disorder. Oh what am I saying - CDJapan here I come! ...it's cheaper from one of the Amazon resellers: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chappaqua-Suite-Ornette-Coleman-Prime/dp/B00GXEXZ36/ref=sr_1_5?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1403507276&sr=1-5&keywords=chappaqua

Ah, if we could only bring them back by writing about them......

....Ah well, it was a good match!

Damn! Coincidently I recently bought a Japanese re-issue of his album "The Source" which I've been playing continously. It's wonderful. His passing even got a mention on the BBC Radio 4 news this morning...that doesn't happen very often! Andy Bey, but ......... ....not like Jimmy!

Let's hope they get off to good start tonight against Spain. It should be a good contest.
