  1. Have to say I agree with every word of that, based on hearing the wonderful Mr Heath live. I'm with you 100%, sidewinder. Seeing him live in New York in the early 2000s was a revelation. Such a nice person as well as a great tenor player. His album "Triple Threat" would be one I took to the desert island!
  2. It's part of a two-fer released by Fresh Sound a few years ago, coupled with "Mallets a-Plenty", both of which have Terry Pollard on piano. I'm a great fan of both of them so perhaps I'm biased but the music and playing on both albums is top-notch. The sound of the Fresh Sound release is OK but I would think a Japanese re-issue of either/both albums would probably sound better.
  3. I recently bought all his recent Japanese Atlantic re-issues and I must say I was impressed. He's not someone I'd given a lot of attention to in the past but hearing these for the first time really opened up my ears!
  4. Yep, they were!
  5. What about my kind comment about the cleanliness of the carpet?
  6. I wish I could keep my carpet that clean.
  7. My God! I'd forgotten all about him. Fred Emney was in loadsa films, inc 'The Italian Job', 'Magnificent men in flying machines' etc etc. Often on the radio, too. MG The perfect face for Radio.....
  8. Am I the only one that finds "Free Fall" unlistenable?
  9. Ordered - along with the Handy and a few others. Blakey 'Hard Bop' now on Last Chance.. Obviously you got the last Handy set. Gone now! Still available at Jazz Messengers...... http://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/6721/john-handy/mosaic-select-john-handy
  10. Like Lon I've not heard all the Sam Most albums but I really like the flute in jazz (a minority, I know!) and he's a very good flautist. The album of his that seems to get the best reviews is the one with Herbie Mann, which came out a while back and is excellent. The Bethlehem McGhee?... get it. Like you said, for 1000yen it's a no-brainer!
  11. Thanks for that...I'm due to see this group at The Sage in Gateshead in April.
  12. So, now I AM confused. Was there no tie-up between Verve-Folkways & the Folkways label itself? Looking at the Verve-Folkways catalogue here: http://www.jazzdisco.org/verve-records/catalog-verve-folkways-verve-forecast-series/album-index/, it looks to me like most of the artists shown also have releases on Folkways. BTW have ANY of the Verve-Folkways albums been re-issued on CD? Edit: Sorry, I must have been composing this at the same time as Paul was posting above. However, looking at the discography again I see that there ARE some albums that have been re-issued on CD eg The J.D. Short & Son House album that has been re-issued by Smithsonian-Folkways. On the other hand there are several there that I've never even heard of, such as the ones by Mark Spoelstra and Patrick Sky, that I'd love to hear. Like Paul, I wonder who has the rights to these?
  13. There seem to be plenty of copies about at ebay, Discogs etc. Strange that none of the music is available for download at Smithsonian/Folkways. It seems to have been issued jointly by Verve/Folkways so I wonder who has the rights to it.
  14. It'll be good to have those Sam Most albums around again. Update: So good indeed, that I've decided to order them! Thanks for the heads-up, etherbored
  15. It will only get worse, unfortunately. The very significant grant it currently gets from The Foreign Office is due to finish in April, after which the total cost of the operation will fall onto the BBC licence payers. I'm very pessimistic about its future.
  16. There's not many of his RCA recordings that aren't worth hearing. A pretty consistent musician IMO.
  17. ..... for $1,500?
  18. It arrived safely here, Allan.
  19. This arrived today and what a beautiful looking set it is. I'll start grooving to it tomorrow!
  20. Bumping this to remind myself to check the Japanese version this week. I think there is no legitimate alternate take, and that the master and "alternate" are actually one in the same. It's a good excuse to spin this disc again. Haven't in some time. I guess this is borne out by the fact that there is no alternate take on the Mosaic Select set, "Pacific Jazz Trios". BTW this is the sort of really interesting thread that keeps me coming back to this board. Great stuff!
  21. Much good music but also considerable chaff amongst the wheat. This set is a warts and more warts approach to Bud. It needed braver editorial decisions. Sometimes less really is more. Agreed. I find that his albums for Blue Note plus the two he made for RCA, 'Strictly Powell' and 'Swingin' with Bud', are more than enough for me. Well... while the point about the inconsistency of the Verve recordings is a good one, the early Verve dates from 1949-1951 are really as good as it gets. If I could have only one set of Bud Powell recordings, that would be it. I couldn't imagine any Bud Powell fan being content without them. You're right about the early Verve dates, I should have included them as well. I'm still not a fan of the later ones though.
  22. I'd also like to say that. Well said Bev. ... and I DO like SOME of what the musicians on David's list play, just not ALL of it. However I like MOST of what Miles Davis, Grant Green et al play, just not ALL of it. All down to personal taste, I guess. It's a contrary old world, isn't it.
  23. Not for me............
  24. Yes. I personally prefer the WPCR reissues, for a variety of reasons. I sold my "Beauty Is A Rare Thing" box set, even though there are six tracks you can find nowhere else (not even in Japan). I think the 2012/2013 WPCR Coleman discs (selling for 1000¥) are very good (not perfect). My favorite from this particular series is Ornette On Tenor. That one, to me, does sound excellent. (I just love that record, too — it's still overlooked, in my opinion, compared to other Coleman records.) For The Shape of Jazz to Come and Change of The Century, I would probably not purchase from the WPCR (1000¥) series. I would look for earlier Japanese editions or the hybrid SACD mentioned above. This post (of mine) either makes things a little clearer ... or a lot less clear. Thanks and what about that box set called "Six Classic" albums which comes out of Europe I think and has the first six Atlantics by Ornette? The "Classic" sets are generally pretty shoddy, using copies taken from anywhere. As an example, half of the Gigi Gryce set is taken from mp3 sources, presumably downloaded from the net somewhere. I'd keep well away from them if I were you.
