  1. Kofi is the last Byrd that I really enjoy. Electric Byrd and Fancy Free have never really done much for me. I can appreciate their historical significance so to speak but other than that I can leave them out of the rotation.
  2. Mark those are great!
  3. At a local used shop I frequent I spotted used TOCJ' of: George Braith.......Extension Freddie Roach.......Down to Earth The Braith is in excellent shape. The Roach has two small surface scratchs. Any interest? I prefer to trade. If no trades develop I will be happy to pick them up for someone looking for these titles. Shoot me a pm if interested......
  4. I voted for Other. My favorite is the Nippon Soul and the subsequent Dizzy's Business which has material from the same tour. Doesn't get much better than this. IMHO.
  5. Currently listening to Indeed! Vol 1 thanks to a fellow board member. Thanks Parkertown
  6. I certainly do not claim to be the expert on these things as there are many more Board Members more knowledgeable than I about these things, but I believe I read where Miles had become very interested in the notes NOT played or what has been referenced here as "space". I believe he developed some of his ideas after listening to Ahmad Jamal and even told Red that he wanted him to play like that.... Miles clearly wanted to move in a different direction and Evans complimented that direction. Maybe others can shed more light on this.
  7. Hampton Hawes Trio Vol 1,2, and 3. All very good and relatively easy to find. I prefer vol. 2 but all are very good and worth getting. Vol. 1 has been remastered I believe. A word of caution. For some strange reason I did not get Hampton Hawes at first. He is not an in your face kind of player IMHO. I revistited his work some time back and just couldn't get enough. I think he is of my favorite pianist now. Spend some time here.....it will pay back big dividends.
  8. Currently listening to Kelly Great (thanks to a fellow board member) with Lee as a sideman.
  9. May have to give this one another chance. I was never particularly moved by this one . Certainly does not rise to the level of Shades of Redd, IMHO. By the way, I saw Redd's Blues at a local shop I frequent recently. If anyone is looking for a copy. I will be happy to see if it is still there.
  10. Old enough to know better...... ...................................... Young enough to try........ 51
  11. Sent a pm regarding the Tyner.
  12. I would not steer anyone away from Easterly Winds. I think it is an interesting straight-ahead session. I picked up all of the recently released Conn.s and have been working my way through them slowly. Winds has some interesting and enjoyable tunes. It takes some unexpected turns but in very subtle ways, never venturing past the hard bop lines of constraint. Worthy of close listening. In fact, I am listening now and Lee just had a very interesting quote of Stormy Weather, maybe all of 5 or 6 notes. Like I said, this is an album with great playing and many subtle turns. It deserves some close listening to get full enjoyment from it. IMHO So far I have listened to Now, Contours, and Winds. Contours is probably my favorite thus far. Much different, ofcourse, but a real fun ride. Very good stuff. Winds is probably second with Now still to be decided. Could not recommend Now yet. Very interesting from a historical perspective, however. I have been waiting on the Hill because I know I want to spend some extended time there. With that said I will probably spin Winds another time or two and move on to the Larry Young. Hill will be the "cherry on top".
  13. Jacknife recently had JRVG's of some Elmo's recently for sale. Can't remember the titles. You might ring his doorbell and see if they sold.
  14. I received my Conn.'s today. I had never heard this group of cds before. Listened to Now first because it was on top of the stack and my first reaction was much like yours. I was struck by the influence that Bobby Hutcherson was having on the music during that late 60's early 70's period. I had recently located a copy of Hutcherson's "Montara" and guess I never realized that Hutcherson was leading the "fusion", contemporary Jazz scene. This is not my favorite period for jazz but in context, and looking back, it is interesting to find Hutcherson having the influence he was obviously having at the time. It is too early for me to recommend Now, but if you are interested from a historical perspective I think it is a good one to check out.
  15. I love it.... I agree with Jim about the fun part. One of the problems of jazz lovers is the fact we tend to take the music too seriously. I agree that I do not enjoy performers who seem to go from one quote to the next with little thought in between. But a well placed quote can bring a smile to my face anytime. Most listeners never want an artist to "phone in" a performance. We want the artist to express his/her emotion. Fortunately for all of us, many jazz artist are not sad all the time. Some even like to laugh and poke fun at themselves. Lighten up.
  16. I certainly do not have the technical knowledge of Jim with respect to Joe's technique on the saxophone, but I have always been impressed by Joe's almost unique ability to add greatness to any session. Whether playing sideman on some outside date, or leading a trio straghtahead, his star shown. If that is "innovative" I am probably not qualified to speak. As a lay person I do know that when Joe Henderson appears on the session I know I am in for something special.
  17. The "new" Prince of Cool boxset has one CD of Chet Baker sings, one of Chet Baker plays and one of a mixed variety I think. How would this compare with the other recently released Baker CDs? I picked up the Sextet release and thought that one was very good.
  18. I agree about Nippon Soul. I also like the continuation of this tour recorded on a cd called Cannoball Adderley live in Japan --Dizzy's Business or something like that. It may even be better. This is classic, classic stuff.
  19. I like it a lot myself, but it's definitely a new direction for Lee, sure wish he'd had a chance to pursue it... Got Delightfulee playing at the moment... I sure agree with the Moose on this one. I would have loved to see where Lee would have taken the music. Frankly I really like the Last Sessions cd but when I play it I usually think about what might have been. Had the Rajah spinning a lot here lately thanks to another board member.
  20. Sent you a pm about the Pearson.......
  21. Same here...........FWIW
  22. Jacknife, Sent you a pm regarding the Pearsons, the Parlans, and the Reece.
  23. Ditto I understand that Relaxin at Camarillo" is not in the box which is a real shame. I like this one as well. Particularlly like the 1st tune " Y Todavia la Quiero". If you would like to hear how a weaker bass player can screw up a tune IMHO, check out Joe's version of this on the "Barcelona" cd and compare. Joe is so good on that number and he still can't pull it out. Again IMO. The bass player ruins the tune for me. The version on "Relaxin at Camarillo" is a whole nother story. Man is that good stuff.
  24. My sentiments exactly! Good points about Vol. 3. While I enjoy the session it is not SFNL.. Still, there is very little Lee that I do not enjoy. I have the Golson disc as well. Pretty good date as I recall.
  25. Brad, That is great news. I have been listening to a lot of Dexter lately, especially a live set he did for Black Lion recorded at the Montmarte' in 1967. Pretty much the same lineup but Tootie Heath on drums. It is excellent.... Any news on the Steeplechase box set. I have put off buying his Steeplechase material in hopes of landing the box set. I hope they bring it out reasonably priced so I can pick up all of his Steeplechase stuff at the same time!
