aaj seems to be back up. http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/forum.php that's good, there shouldn't be a monopoly.
  2. it was dated as 7/10/64 on the fan compiled 'ayler tree' discs a few years ago.

  7. thanks
  8. >>> (D) The following is a performance that intersplices the takes from the March 31 and August 13, 1954 session. The original uncut takes no longer exist. co 51245-1/2 Jumpin' At The Woodside >>> does coleman hawkins solo on this composite?
  9. but he didn't know how to play rhythm guitar. i like grant, but those live 70's cd releases are kind of annoying in that after he finishes soloing and then plays behind the next soloists, he just plays the same exact lick/patern over and over for the entire duration of the tune.
  10. Dannie Richmond, my favorite drummer.
  11. thanks for your help. that New York Times review is b.s., because hawkins was still playing well in 1965. he started looking frail in 1966. i am still curious why lord's discography doesn't list this film. seems that he would have the info for it it by the time your 2004 version was completed.
  12. it seems that the rhapsody video was first issued in the mid 1980's.
  13. i can confirm from a/b comparison that pumpkin vinyl A1 Crazy Rhythm 9:13 - this is an unedited version of the same performance as on the rhapsody vhs. pumpkin vinyl B1 Just One More Chance 7:25 this is the same as on the rhapsody vhs. as to whether it is a tv studio or village vanguard, i don't know but one of the two locations is probably correct. i'm surprised that lord helped with the release of the pumpkin (according to the credits), but didn't make the connection of the audio with the vhs film. and i assume that they are still 2 separate sessions in his discography.
  14. Meeker's Jazz on Film database is referencing the same video as on rhapsody. confirmation: https://books.google.com/books?id=8FwyY-6IveQC&pg=PA50&lpg=PA50&dq=coleman+hawkins+and+earl+hines+1965+rhapsody+%22Fine+and+dandy%22&source=bl&ots=R1Ma4rTSEa&sig=umQsNfzqe3W3f2BapCsoFahHZAw&hl=en&sa=X&ei=4neQVLSPEM-vyAS8oIKQDA&ved=0CCAQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=coleman%20hawkins%20and%20earl%20hines%201965%20rhapsody%20%22Fine%20and%20dandy%22&f=false the middle of "Rifftide" is on the last 2 minutes of the video, during the credits. i guess the video/pumpkin vinyl could be village vanguard rather than a tv studio, but it is a different session from Earl Hines Trio "Grand Reunion" Recorded live at the Village Vanguard 1965. http://www.discogs.com/Earl-Hines-Trio-Grand-Reunion/release/2812272 because the common tunes from grand reunion below do not match the versions on the pumpkin vinyl Rosetta Just One More Chance >> If this is the material from which Rhapsody drew its release, then it's different from what Pumpkin issued. >>> it's not different, because pumpkin: A1 Crazy Rhythm 9:13 - this is an unedited version of the same performance as on the above rhapsody vhs. B1 Just One More Chance 7:25 this is the same as on the above rhapsody vhs. Note that Meeker lists one of the tunes as "One More Choice." This is almost certainly "One More Chance." >>> yes, it is "Just One More Chance"
  15. thanks. lord doesn't note that the pumpkin vinyl is from the same session as the rhapsody vhs?
  16. vhs "Earl Hines & Coleman Hawkins 1965" (nyc tv studio with audience) Rhapsody Films, 30 minutes. 15 minutes of tunes with hawkins: One More Chance, Crazy Rhythm, Rifftide. vinyl lp: Earl Hines & Coleman Hawkins "rifftide" (Pumpkin Productions 105) Recorded New York City March 1965 A1 Crazy Rhythm 9:13 - this is an unedited version of the same performance as on the above vhs. A2 Rosetta 9:05 B1 Just One More Chance 7:25 this is the same as on the above vhs. B2 Rifftide 8:10 - this is an unedited version of the same performance as on the above vhs. B3 Indian Summer 5:01 http://www.discogs.com/Coleman-Hawkins-With-Earl-Hines-Trio-Rifftide/release/4918808 it seems unusual to have an unedited audio version of an old tv recording. tom lord is listed in the credits of the vinyl release. does his discography list Rosetta and Indian Summer as being from the same session as the other tunes on the vinyl? thanks
  17. the full show on the vhs release is 58 minutes. the u.s. dvd version is a bad transfer from vhs, and probably missing the monk performance. the european dvd versions issued by the IDEM label are 2 sided pal/ntsc discs, have the complete show with monk, excellent quality. but both the pal and ntsc sides are speeded up 4% for pal, and the total time is 55 minutes. u.s. dvd version 2003 label: Quantum Leap http://www.amazon.com/Sound-Jazz-Coleman-Hawkins/dp/B00006JDUY/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1418695381&sr=1-1&keywords=%22Sound+of+Jazz%22&tag=donations09-20 european dvd version, all on IDEM label 2003 "Sound of Jazz complete edition" and included in these compilations "Greatest Jazz Films Ever" "vintage collection 1958-1961" is there a good ntsc release of this show on dvd?
  18. for the completists John Coltrane ‎– The Impulse! Albums: Volume Two http://www.discogs.com/John-Coltrane-The-Impulse-Albums-Volume-Two/release/1374109 this release has the version of the 1963 John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman album without coltrane's overdubs on My One and Only Love, Lush Life, and You Are Too Beautiful. http://www.wildmusic-jazz.com/jcdisc63notes.htm#630307 "At a later date, Coltrane decided to overdub some additional obbligato saxophone phrases behind Hartman's vocals on My One and Only Love, Lush Life and You Are Too Beautiful."
  19. 1973 was a staggering year for pharoah, and J. Bonner was there for all of it. http://www.angelfire.com/id2/laotan/1973.html i want a box set of the pharoah ELEVATION sessions.
  20. what would make sense to me in the cases of sears, jcpenny, radio shack, and other chains that don't seem to have any customers in the stores, is that they are getting subsidized by the government so that there is no monopoly by walmart and target (target seems to be doing fine, judging by the amount of customers in the stores). renting those huge spaces, and the stock/employees... it just doesn't make sense how they could make ends meet otherwise.
  21. i've wondered how they've managed to stay in business all this time. maybe the owner is rich, and doesn't care about losing money. same thing with jcpenny. sometimes i have to go in there, and it's always a ghost town.
  22. newer info: someone from the saturn list said that there was mention of releasing these remastered versions on disc.
  23. it's from this dvd "The Sixties Quartet" dvd of four 8mm films by Jonas Mekas includes: film "Happy Birthday to John", which includes 8mm footage of miles at j. lennon party, nyc? 6-12-71 5-minutes edited to remove unneeded info.

  25. in evans' defence, it must be hard for a jazz piano trio not to sound like glorified lounge music. i was always bored when tying to listen to his trios. i like ellington trios, mostly because of the choice of tunes. i don't think there are any fats waller piano trios. too bad.
