  1. of "Red Rubber Ball" fame Also "Turn-Down Day"! You mean they actually recorded more than one song.
  2. They still love and play his songs all the time in Nigeria. In fact, one of Flavour's current pop hits, "Ashawo," is nothing but a remake of Lawson's Sawale.
  3. This music is truly amazing. I had forgotten just how amazing - very innovative and highly charged Afro-Funk/Highlife:
  4. But nothing on Thad Dameron? Too bad ... I remember that was how Tommy Flanagan pronounced Thad Jones. He use to play a lot of Thad Jones compositions and spoke with a lisp. "This is another Tadd Jones composition."
  5. I would also give a strong recommendation for the two live Jackie McLean albums from the same concert: Tune Up and Dr. Jackle.
  6. Why were you skeptical, Allen? Both Sonny Boy and Robert Lockwood look quite young.
  7. It seems that most Bill Barron never made it to CD, at least in the West. As a leader, there are Hot Line (with Booker Ervin), Motivation, Variations in Blue, West Side Story Bossa Nova, the Brasileros Bossa Nova. Even Modern Windows was only released on CD in highly abridged form (The Modern Windows Suite). I have never heard Snake Johnson with Curson, and don't recall that one being on CD either
  8. I love Kenny Dorham, but the reason that I reach for Whistle Stop more than any of his other albums is because of the rhythm section. Wow!
  9. Yea, the line has to be drawn somewhere in terms of enforcement of copyright laws. Otherwise, what do those laws mean? We will completely lose property rights over media. Megaupload was apparently paying people to steal Hollywood films before their official release and upload them. That had to be stopped.
  10. Yea, I have always wondered about this verse as well. But I suspect that it was something real nasty that is full of word substitutes. "duck with legs sticking up" is not so hard to figure out, but the rest is curious.
  11. People tend to talk a lot more about why Miles fired Hank than why he hired him. Miles didn't hire people that he didn't like. As for the disparaging comments that Miles made in his Autobiography, I chalk that up to Miles at the time getting bored in general with bop and "playing changes," which is what Mobley did so well.
  12. After a difficult battle, Melody Records in Washington DC is finally shutting down. Melody Records is a family run business that made a point of stocking a good selection of music, including from independent labels like Nessa. I used to love visiting that store and always tried to give them as much business as a I could. I would order CDs from Internet or by mail only in the event that Melody didn't stock them. They really enjoyed running the store and tried to hold on as long as they could. But the business just doesn't pay any more. The closing of Melody is the end of an era in Washington, the end of quality music stores. RIP

    Wes and Liza

Yes, the original is pretty special. I hardly listened to Dionne Warwick back in the day. I didn't have any of her albums. Now I am a fan, and listen to her regularly.
  14. Good to see that you are still around, MG! Every Friday night, I get to hear a band in Abuja that plays great Ibo highlife, including classics by Chief Osadebe. That music is timeless! They say that Ebeneezer Obey is now completely retired from performing.
  15. It would be nice to hear what the original AACM (Muhal Richard Abrams) band sounded like in the 60s. I've heard that the band sound on Joseph Jarman's Song for Christopher (On As If it Were the Seasons) might be close.
  16. I may have a warped ear, but I really like the piano on these recordings. Mal Waldron plays exceptionally well, and the out-of-tuneness gives it a certain unusual edge. OK, fire away...

  18. I just listened through this box. WOW!!!!! This has got to be some of the best Hendrix on wax. I particularly like the third night (the 12th). An instant classic and favorite!
  19. :( RIP
  20. I spent most of my time in 2011 in Nigeria, and this one has been particularly burning up the local dance floor. It may be too much of a modern studio production a la Hip Hop for those of you who appreciate primarily the work of live bands. But hey, we are already well into the 21st century. This is the current sound of the street in Nigeria and there is some highly inspired dance music here:
  21. Sounds nice, like the system that I need!
  22. What about going from ALAC to FLAC? Is that also easy?
  23. There are ways around the iTunes thing. iTunes has lossless capabilities, they have their own file type called Apple Lossless (ALAC - it's just a FLAC file with a different header). There are many converters out there that will quickly change FLAC to ALAC and then you can use them in iTunes like any other file. If you are using a Mac, there are also numerous players that support FLAC, including Vox (my favorite), Cog, Songbird and others. You can also use a program like 'FLUKE" which tricks iTunes into thinking the Flac file is a wav file, this allows you to keep the file in Flac format but still use iTunes. Thanks. These are options to consider. I suppose that this FLUKE thing works only on iTunes, not iPods?
  24. I store lossless files in FLAC and use iTunes. Since iTunes doesn't play FLAC and WAV takes up too much room, I make additional MP3s to use in iTunes. So I have lossless, but usually listen to lossy, not a very efficient combination. What do you guys do?
  25. I just read through this thread for the first time. This is a REALLY interesting discussion. Kenton is so huge, both in the good and bad sense, that the jury may be out on him forever. People write of the shock of first hearing Albert Ayler in the 60s. It is hard to imagine the extent of that shock today. Putting on a full metal jacket Stan Kenton record is maybe the closest that we can get. Those records still sound shocking.
