  1. Don't have a copy of 'Nefertiti' yet (saving up for the box set), but 'Sorcerer' is one of my favorite albums, period. If I ever get tired of listening to Miles or Wayne or Herbie, I will never tire of listening to Tony and Ron playing together.
  2. My jazz obsession started with Mingus (wouldn't give anything else a try for awhile), once I heard 'Love Supreme' it was Trane, once I heard 'Take Twelve' it was Morgan, quickly moving into Art Blakey and other hard bop players. When I started listening to jazz, for some reason I stayed away from Miles. Maybe it was a kneejerk reaction to the "ya like jazz? yer gonna luv Miles" attitudes I got from otherwise uninformed record store employees (you know the type, ask for some good hard rock suggestions and they'll send you to the latest Metallica and completely pass over the Melvins), so for a lot of years I never gave Miles much of a listen to. After putting plenty of other jazz under my belt (the aforementioned along with some Dolphy, Roland Kirk et al) I started to give some serious listening to all of Miles' music, and he quickly became a giant in my jazz world. IMO nobody personifies the depth of jazz music as much as he has. So, in other words, I guess I've been listening to a lot of Miles lately.
  3. 'Dingo' IMO, was a pretty good album. Not up there with his more popular recordings, but I enjoyed it much more than 'Tutu'. Maybe it has to do with the compositions (by LeGrand), but his playing was very nice, and I think it perhaps is a little underrated. Aahh, what do I know? I think 'Doo-Bop' is underrated as well.
  4. Another vote for organizing alphabetically.
  5. If you make it over to Portland, swing down south to Eugene. There's a few jazz club's in town, but I'd recommend trying Sam Bond's Garage. They put on a variety of shows there, running from jazz to country to rock to indescribable. Good venue, nice stage, supportive audience. While you're at it, send some music to the local college radio station. There's a jazz program on Sunday that plays all styles, so you guys should fit in there somewhere. Link to their promotions department KWVA with links to local clubs on that page. Link to Sam Bond's Garage
  6. Congrats! Watching him grow and develop will truly be an amazing experience!! I';ve got a three year old boy and a girl on the way (eta early October), and I heartily endorse naps as a key component to keeping your sanity.
  7. Yeah, if you're at the point where it takes a rare find to get your wallet out, it can be much more time than it's worth, unless you're just the type that enjoys "digging for gold". On the other hand, if you're just starting out, it can be a great way to start. [/QUOT What, you guys have lives or something?
  8. Don't neglect garage sales, estate sales, etc. There's nothing more satisfying than digging through piles of records and making a great find. Recently hit an estate sale and walked out with 5 operas, 5 other albums of classical, along with a McCoyTyner, Return to Forever, Weather Report, and an Earth Wind and Fire, for a grand total of $1.00. Wish I'd have heard about it sooner. It was pretty culled by the time I got there.
  9. John Handy. Just picked up Live at the Monterrey Jazz Festival, and listened to it over and over. Any other Handy recs?
  10. Unassuming freaks? Yeah, I knew there was a reason I only posted here. B)
  11. John Handy-Live at the Monterey Jazz Festival Melvins-Hostile Ambient Takeover
  12. Watched Bringing Up Baby the night before we read the news. She was definately one of a kind. Thanks.
  13. Alright, I voted no. If pro wrestling is still alive and kicking, leave boxing alone.
  14. I really don't follow the sport, so I didn't vote. Just popped in to say I agree with thoughts posted here about Tyson being a pox on the sport. Especially after seeing "When We Were Kings" about the Rumble In the Jungle bout with Ali and Foreman. Ali was someone to look up to, not just in the ring, but became a positive role model outside as well. Hell, all public figures should take a look at him and learn some lessons. He was one of a kind. BTW, aren't some of his problems caused by Parkinson's?
  15. PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE DON'T LET ANY OF THOSE HACKS TOUCH SANDMAN!!!
  16. That was my next choice. That or their live album.
  17. I decided early on that this movie was one to skip. Changed my mind when I saw who the director was. Now I'm interested (although I still have to convince the wife. Surprisingly, though, it was she who dragged me to X2).
  18. Well, it's not jazz, but I've really been digging The Band lately. I've got "Music From The Big Pink", "Stage Fright" and "Cahoots", and love the harmonies and songwriting on all three of them. I'm sure I'll be getting more soon.
  19. The comic is great! A lot of fun! Written by Alan Moore, who also penned The Watchmen, revitalized The Swamp Thing, and did exhaustive research for his book on Jack the Ripper, the epic "From Hell" (yes, the movie that starred Johnny Depp. Haven't seen it, but the book was great). Can't say enough about how I enjoy this guy's writing, and yes, they are all comic books. But don't let that stop you.
  20. Found "Easter" on vinyl at a garage sale last weekend and am enjoying it quite a bit. I've always passed on her stuff before, but 25 cents seemed like a good price. I've been getting more into the early NY punk scene lately. Television's "Marquee Moon" has been on heavy rotation in my CD player lately. Must be getting older, starting to prefer poetry to power chords (apologies to Johnny Thunders).
  21. Haven't listened to much Sonny (shame, shame)but now I know where to start (this board is KILLING my wallet!) But I have been listening to "Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins" and have to give my to that. Rollins only plays on two tracks, but he and Diz absolutely TEAR IT UP on the first track (my first Sonny Stitt too).
  22. Any other fans of the Melvins out there? "Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments" has been on heavy rotation at work lately (my coworkers LOVE me!!)
  23. At the risk of sounding cliche, Kind Of Blue still does it for me. I work alone in the early AM and it's the perfect fit for watching the sun come up. Went through a period where I listened to it every morning for three weeks straight. -_- GoM, ouch! Hope you're up and around soon!
  24. Just got this one last week and hadn't given it a good spin yet, but thanks for pointing it out. Yeah, it's a great solo, not only for Shorter, but I LOVE Blakey's playing here.
