Haven't listened to much Sonny (shame, shame)but now I know where to start (this board is KILLING my wallet!) But I have been listening to "Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins" and have to give my to that. Rollins only plays on two tracks, but he and Diz absolutely TEAR IT UP on the first track (my first Sonny Stitt too).

Any other fans of the Melvins out there? "Ozma/Gluey Porch Treatments" has been on heavy rotation at work lately (my coworkers LOVE me!!)

At the risk of sounding cliche, Kind Of Blue still does it for me. I work alone in the early AM and it's the perfect fit for watching the sun come up. Went through a period where I listened to it every morning for three weeks straight. -_- GoM, ouch! Hope you're up and around soon!

Just got this one last week and hadn't given it a good spin yet, but thanks for pointing it out. Yeah, it's a great solo, not only for Shorter, but I LOVE Blakey's playing here.

Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
Jad replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
Okay, my confession. I don't really dig Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil". I enjoy some of the tunes on it, but don't care for Hubbard's playing on it. Can't help but wish Lee was blowing instead (might as well admit I don't really care for a lot of Hubbard's playing anyway. Not my place to say he's overrated, just preference I guess). -

Miles' opening salvo on "Selim", and pretty much the whole LIVE EVIL album.

My wife works at a local fish market and is privy to some of the freshest salmon in town. Nothing better than letting it soak in a garlic ginger marinade and grilling it over mesquite.

Hit Song Science just may be the future of popular
Jad replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Deep down inside, weren't we all afraid of this (or something like it)? -
Aaah, gotta love the Stooges, AC/DC, Sex Pistols, Ramones, Motorhead. Rock is best when it's dumb.

Hip Hip Turntablism and Jazz Education
Jad replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Alright, I feel like I'm stepping into it here, but here it goes: There's a rule of science that says once you take something out of it's natural setting in order to study it, the nature of what you are studying changes. I feel that this was true for jazz, and I feel that it will happen to "turntablism" if it is taken out of the clubs and put into the classroom. I realize that prior to jazz study programs many top jazz players were involved in music programs, but the emphasis there was on learning music, and it was up to the players themselves to apply what they learned to playing jazz. IMO, if they HAD been taking jazz classes instead of music classes, they would have ended up in different places, even if the goals were the same. -
Hip Hip Turntablism and Jazz Education
Jad replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yeah, but honing your craft in front of an audience and honing it in front of a master are going to give you two different results. IMHO, once people began to learn more jazz in school than in the nightclubs and bars, jazz began to lose some of it's fire. -
Hey, I've been gone all weekend. Miss anything?

Well, looks like the card's taking another ding. Thanks for the suggestions!

Looking for some good humorous novels
Jad replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
'Good Omens' by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Anything by Terry Pratchett. Also Douglas Adams' 'Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy' books. All of these are the Monty Python school of dry humor. -
Thanks for the link!! Just got done with the first article and am looking forward to reading the rest.

"Bride With White Hair" was one of the better (best) of the martial arts-fantasy genre that came out of Hong Kong in the nineties. Spent a lot of time watching HK action flicks when I was in school. Borderline obsession with me. You know it's bad when you spend hours watching foreign language films and can't make heads or tails of the poorly placed subtitles, and you realize that the dialogue just doesn't matter here. Say what you will about John Woo and Chow Yun Fat since they moved stateside, their best work was done overseas(same for Jet Li and Jackie Chan).

Thanks for the suggestions. But seeing as how I just dropped more than I should have for a pair of speakers, I was hoping to find something a little cheaper. So how much sound quality am I going to sacrifice if I wanted to spend under $200? mp3 playback is not an issue, nor is SACD.

Just watched A Better Tommorrow and Bride With White Hair this weekend in memory of Leslie Cheung.

underrated or personal fave film noirs
Jad replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The Blue Dahlia with Alan Ladd. Screenplay by Raymond Chandler. The Killing-an early Kubrick film, screenplay by Jim Thompson. And in keeping with the Mitchum films, the original Cape Fear. Man, he made a great psycho. -
I'm finally getting around to getting a DVD player, but need to know my options. I'm pretty much an amateur in the audiophile area, so what do I need to make sure my CDs still sound nice? or should I keep my old Denon CD player handy?
-
Hell yeah. I'm always sceptical when a band reforms after such a long hiatus, but their last album was a pleasent surprise. They still sound fresh.
