  1. Interesting that the last time I checked the NEWS at the Blue Note site there was a topic regarding the fact that Norah had written a post to her fans on the Norah Jones unofficial site. There was a link to the site as well and a characterization of the site as being "full of information and other fun stuff" The news topic is now gone.
  2. Someone mentioned a Dizzy Reece set in some other thread. That would be very nice indeed.
  3. I only respond to these types of questions when they are associated with a poll.
  4. I'm holding no grudge. After seeing that Norah site and putting together a pretty reasonable hypothesis as to what prompted the crackdown, I understand that the action had to be swift and decisive. I think they could have accomplished the same thing with some direct emails, a few thread deletions and subsequent banishment of those unwilling to voluntarily comply. I still check there regularly for news anyway. I'll go check it out if/when it opens. I expect an entirely different vibe there, though. This board has nicely replaced all the aspects of the BNBB that I enjoyed, without the garbage.
  5. You mean "September Soung" off the Cole/Shearing could possibly be a typo?
  6. I can't possibly imagine that once knowing of the Bob Jones thing, that Blue Note would not have immediately taken action. Norah is their shining star and I cannot imagine that they would allow that connection to continue. I hope they take the appropriate action - immediately. I've said that I regret making that silly post on that board. Maybe it was a bad joke to start with but it essentially was harmless. For that, my name has been loosely linked to some type of child abuse and then repeatedly referenced in insulting remarks and finally we were all threatened with frivelous lawsuits, the band, the site and by association sitemembers were threatened with some form of black listing or smear campaign using pressure tactics most closely associated with racketeering and thuggery. For this the perpetrator is promoted from Moderator to Board Administrator? Neon came across as a decent guy who was trying to do the right thing. Now that he has reversed his decision, seems like that whole site has a certain stench to it. Maybe the stench is emanating from the Bob Jones link, from the tacit endorsement of that site and the tacit endorsement of the tactics used by their now board administrator.
  7. Bla bla bla For no good reason, I went over to the NJ board today to see if anyone had posted to my favorite color thread. I know it's water under the bridge and all that, but guess who's now a board administrator over there? So much for principals and backbone and doing what's right.
  8. Europe, and Orchard Park, NY. I feel lucky that my 3rd grader gets music lessons at school. I know many school districts have eliminated music. I pay the way for his piano. At school, he takes viola. I'm trying to talk him into switching instruments and joining the 4th and 5th grade jazz orchestra.
  9. Not a single jazz club in SF? Wow, that is a shame. I used to go to a local Media Play for discs. They were cheaper than Borders and always had a good selection Not any more. It's pathetic - perhaps 15% of the size it used to be - and in total disarray. A local chain - Record Theatre has a a decent selection of the newer stuff, but considerably smaller than say - 5 years ago. The local Borders has the best selection around. The jazz section has lost maybe 10% of their space in the past few years - but you pay the full pop over there. I rarely buy anything that's not on sale. I guess I'd like to see retail stores have better selections, but I can see why they don't. We've heard over and over that jazz does not sell. That really does appear to be the case. It's too expensive to have all this inventory sitting around for the few guys who'll come in and dig out some older releases. Like most here, I use the net over 95% of the time. I like the instant gratification that a store provides but not enough to spend the extra cash. Heck, you can get discs $4-5 cheaper than new releases at Borders in many cases. The lack of sales tax over the net usually offsets the shipping costs. The selection is better as well. Now when the internet stores start dropping titles then we're in trouble.
  10. I went with Sonny Clark but it was a very tough choice.
  11. I think it's the sex sells angle. Ever see the Inside Deep Note titles at Dusty Groove?

    AAJ

I can't seem to put my finger on why AAJ is less interesting. I guess it's a combination of many of the factors you all have been mentioning. I visit there regularly and post as well, but there just seems to be very little action - as opposed to here. I've tried Jazz Corner as well. That place just doesn't seem to fit with my personality or something.
  13. Dex's Nights at the Keystone is a possibility.
  14. I remember writing Michael Cuscuna about a Jamal Mosaic and he said basically the same thing - legal problems prevent these from being released. Of course there's also Verve's reluctance to let Mosaic license their holdings, although I know that this appears to be changing what with the Mulligan CJB and all.

    Martial Solal

You guys are making me consider cancelling my CD Universe back-order and head out to a brick and mortar. Come to think of it, they probably won't have it either.

It's not just you Brad. I don't understand why political threads need to be a part of a jazz board either. As a long time BNBB member, I saw first hand how the vitriol and venom spilled over and enetered other threads. This board has been different to this point however. Maybe its because the usual suspect in the political forums know each other so well and know the boundaries of the participants in the political threads or maybe it's as simple as Greg is not here, but I see no spillover into non political threads to this point. As for me - on this board - I still avoid the political stuff. I come here for jazz information and dialogue. But, I'm okay with the politics being on this board as long as there is no spillover. So far, so good in that area.
  17. As for the AMG ratings in general, from the AMG website: Thus, it is possible for a generally unappreciated Grant Green album to get a three, since that title is only being compared to other Grant Green titles. It also explains how some Kenny G records get a 4.5 star rating
  18. Well, I placed my order and then posted to this thread - then read the more recent posts questioning the legitimacy of these CDs based on violation of the terms of sales in the licensing agreement. Therefore, I decided to peacefully surrender these discs to the US Marshall who appears to have just pulled into my driveway I'm with Rooster here - EMI is making their money on the sales of these through the licensing agreement with Time-Life, so screw 'em. If they want to garner profits from US sales, then release 'em in the US. If Time Life felt they could market these successfully as some sort of club then why doesn't Blue Note or Mosaic do the same thing right here in the good old USA. Many on the board have been saying that for years. In general, I do not buy Japanese releases not available in the US unless I am extremely anxious to get a title. But here comes a series of releases chockfull of titles I've been looking for at a great price and bingo- they make a sale. I can tell you that if BN or Mosaic had the vision to create such a marketing plan then the sales would have been theirs - not Freshsounds.
  19. I saw this thread, saw the list, saw the price and could not resist - in spite of the covers. My shipment came yesterday - nicely packaged and about 5 days after I placed the order. I was only looking to fill gaps in my collection at what I found to be an arffordable price. I picked up Lonnie Smith's Turning Point, Johnny Hartman's For Trane, the two Joao Gilbertos, The two Dizzy Gillespies, Mingus' Complete Town Hall Concert, Horace Parlan's Up and Down, Annie Ross sings a song with mulligan, the Cole/Shearing, Corea's Early Circle, and Clifford Jordan. I've only listened to the Joao Gilbertos at this point. The sound is great and the music - in a word - is fabulous, excellent, superb and wonderful. I'm very glad to finally have found these - no matter what the color of the cover. I've got the Parlan on right now which is excellent as well. I've got the Parlan Mosaic on LP so I've already heard the material but wanted a CD copy as well, so this worked out for me just fine. I'm glad to have some titles that I've been looking for for some time at an affordable price. As mentioned above, they are legit and officially licensed so i had no qualms there. The covers I suppose fit the concept of the series but are - well - very, very Blue.
  20. I'm pretty sure it's Nellie Jordan, Tod. My wife has it and enjoys it. Apparently this Jordan character is the daughter of someone named Ronnie Shoncar, though I'm not sure why this is so important.
  21. I did not vote. I've pretty much given up on Wynton and only have heard four of these. Could not choose between the 4 I know - and that's not because I enjoyed any of them.
  22. My favorite Marsalis record is Black Codes. Hot House Flowers is a reasonably close second. There's a live at Blues Alley that I used to enjoy but have not listened to in years. J Mood was a disappointment to me. I dod not vote.
  23. My purchases have not dimished, so it must be the rest of you guys
  24. Or what if you're a wannabe musician who really sucks? Seriously, I received a mailing as ell and put it aside to see if there were any comments. Sounds interesting. Anyone else get this magazine?
