As far as the sound goes, if there are other options, seek those. Otherwise, the Collectables will do. I don't have any problems with the sound quality of their Atlantic jazz stuff. The early CD era Collectables CD's had horrid sound, many apparently dubbed from vinyl, but they eventually got their act together. I think they maybe are leasing digital masters rather than doing their own mastering now, but can't say for sure.

Fully agree on all points. Reminds me that I also like "Bernadette" even better than "Reach Out, I'll Be There", and it's a MUCH darker song. Mine too. Certainly something of a "redo" of "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'", but even better. In the same sense at the same time, I've always felt "Hurt So Bad" by Little Anthony & The Imperials was an even better redo of "Goin' Out of My Head". And they were all on the radio in the same period, Fall/Winter of '64 through Spring of '65. Talk about a golden era.

Me too - KOB (3 - original desecration CD, remaster, Miles/Trane box), Soul Station (2 - McMaster, RVG), Tenor Madness (2 - OJC, Rollins Prestige box). And I'll buy 'em again if something new comes along that makes price/value/utility point sense for me. I have shelled out for 'A Love Supreme' on CD four different times. But I don't need a facsimile trumpet case or mouthpiece.

I highly recommend Getz's 2CD Dynasty, especially to any other Eddy Louiss fans out there. In many ways it is more a Louiss album featuring Getz than a Getz album, and it is marevelous.

I've had a couple of shaky experiences with MovieMars, but Newbury and ImportCDs have been great, and I've ordered a dozen CD's from Newbury and I'm sure over a hundred from ImportCD's.

Just say no! Agreed, and I plan to just say "no", but the really good news is that there will be two more repackagings of 'Kind of Blue', which has to set (or more likely extend) some kind of industry record for most repackagings. And for all of that, the 'On The Corner' box will remain out of print unless you spring for the 43CD set with the trumpet mouthpiece (I know that sounds like one of those old National Lampoon commercials, but it's true!).

Cool, by next Valentine's day, we can look forward to "Bela Fleck Plays For Lovers", etc.

I'd have loved a huge Eddie Harris set, too! Probably 15ish? Also Roland Kirk, of course! Would have been a great companion to the Mercury box, but having all the 32Jazz discs and some more on Rhino is cool as well! Unlike Trane/Mingus/Ornette, not everything that the MJQ did for Atlantic can be considered "essential", so a box for just the earlier stuff would have been OK by me. Same is true for Eddie Harris of course, he did a lot of junk on Atlantic in the 70's. Not everything Joel Dorn touched in the 70's turned into musical gold, though I admired him in a lot of ways. Anything Rahsaan did is worth hearing. I'm sure sales projections were a consideration. We could go on and on - Mose Allison, Yusef Lateef, Les McCann, no doubt others I'm not thinking of. If they were going to draw a line, they drew it in a sensible place.

The early Mosaics had that also, and I agree. All alternate takes should be pushed to the end for optimal listening! Also agree on the Mingus box, great stuff. Wish they had done something sensible/complete/similar on the early Atlantic MJQ material, though if they were only going to do three, they certainly picked the right three.

BTW, the Ornette box set on Rhino/Atlantic is fabulously done also, sort of along the same lines as the Coltrane box set.

James Brown!!!!! is right. And I enjoyed the Stones stuff. Much of the rest of it just comes off as bizarre to me at this late date due to the intrusion of the go-go dancers, who often get much more of the camera than the performers. The James Brown performance, however, is more than worth the price of admission.

My link Rhino has packaged Dionne Warwick's first three albums ('Presenting...','Anyone Who Had A Heart','Make Way For...') along with two other early good ones ('The Windows of the World','Valley of the Dolls') in a 5CD mini-LP set that you can get for under $25 on Amazon Marketplace. Sound is no great shakes, the packaging is basic, and there are no liner notes, but you're effectively getting 58 songs of primo Warwick/Bacharach-David for a very reasonable price. Some great great stuff. The same series has 5CD entries by Donny Hathaway, the Drifters, Chaka Khan, and others. It's called "Original Album Series", basically like the Sony/BMG "Original Album Classics" series.

Lesley Gore had four top-5 charting songs in the 18 months prior to this, was a huge presence at that time, though she had very little commercial success afterwards. The songs were "It's My Party" (#1), "Judy's Turn to Cry" (#5), "She's A Fool" (#5), and "You Don't Own Me" (#2 for three weeks in early 1964, kept out of #1 by the Beatles). "That's The Way Boys Are" (#12) and "Maybe I Know" (#14) were also significant 1964 hits for her which would have charted even higher but for the British Invasion. And some of those are great pop records, especially "You Don't Own Me", which still produces goose pimples when I hear it. BTW, she was a Quincy Jones discovery/production.

I also consider it their best. 1/4 of it showed up on side two of 'I Sing The Body Electric', which is their best US release to me. 'Sweetnighter' is a great groove, though. Different and simpler.

I think that is a good approach, tracks pretty closely to what I do, and I have been able to sell a lot of CD's to members (and buy a lot of CD's from members!). Do whatever you can to keep the shipping charges low, especially in bulk. Amazon Marketplace charges $3/CD shipping on top of the prices for used CD's, so if you are both coming in well below the Amazon prices and well below the Amazon shipping, you should do OK as long as you have titles people want (no Kenny G around here!).

I don't remember that one at all, will be interested to hear, since I own that box and hope I didn't miss something! I remember that they had to repress one of the Sam Rivers Mosaic discs due to a mastering error.

I love the Heavyweight Champion box set of his Atlantic recordings. They sound good to me considering the source material (I'm sure there are arguments that other editions sound better, but how much so? - they were a big improvement over the original CD issues), and the packaging is top notch. The Atlantics did sound funky - what in the world was going on with the recording of Tommy Flanaga's piano on "Giant Steps"?
